25 Years Of The

Americans With

Disabilities Act

By: Nathan Young

@nvyoung

25 years ago, President George H.W. Bush signed the Americans With Disabilities Act.

The act requires public places to have access to the disabled. It also requires ways for the disabled to have the opportunities to be

successful in their lives.

Yes, public places have gotten better for the disabled. BUT, many of these same disabled

people often struggle with having ways to have a successful life.

For example, people with disabilities often deal with people who want to bully them.

And many people with disabilities often struggle with finding employment opportunities.

Yes, some with disabilities have seen their lives approve, for example the Paralympics rock!

But, we often face stereotypes every time a major event, like a mass shooting happens.

And did mention the cyber bullying as well?

People in America must REALIZE that those with disabilities are wonderful people!

Sadly, here in Alabama. The state has the MOST people with disabilities than any other state in America. Alabama leads the nation in disability rates, as nearly a third of Alabama residents require some assistance to negotiate basic daily life.  The disability rate in Alabama

is 31.5 percent.

People with disabilities are NOT lazy people!

People with Asperger’s are not weird people!

We NEED people to quit bullying us!

We can be successful, but we need to be given a chance!

Because many with disabilities are not given a chance, we often have to rely on Social Security

Disability.

I mean, thankfully there is disability, but America needs to do a better job with those with

disabilities.

In 2010, less than 1 in 5 people with disabilities held a job. I mean, this is not how it’s supposed to work in

America!

People with disabilities have to often deal with bullying, unemployment, discrimination, and

more. I mean, this has to stop for good!

It’s time for people to treat those with disabilities with dignity and respect!

In Closing

The Americans With Disabilities Act has done wonders, but we have a long way to go before

those with disabilities have the opportunity to live the dream!
