Course Description Selected Topics in Internal Medicine is a course designed to update general internists, internist-subspecialists, family medicine physicians, and other primary health care providers on selected internal medicine topics. Our expert faculty will present timely updates on some of the most important topics in practice. The lectures are clinically focused and relevant to the generalist practice.
Course Learning ObjectivesUpon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
• Summarize recent updates, clinical studies, and new guidelines that impact practice in general medicine.
• Describe the indications and major adverse effects of five newly FDA approved medications that are applicable to a general medicine practice.
• List the indications, complications, and technique for intra-articular steroid injections.
• Learn common clinical pearls in the areas of general internal medicine, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, and endocrinology.
• Describe management options for rhinosinusitis.
• Describe management options for valvular heart disease.
• Review management strategies for patients who have failed statin therapy for hyperlipidemia.
• Define and describe treatment strategies for borderline personality disorder.
• Summarize an approach to follow a patient with pulmonary nodules.

Date and LocationSelected Topics in Internal Medicine will be held January 28 – February 1, 2013 at The Fairmont Orchid, Kohala Coast, The Big Island of Hawaii. Course headquarters will be located within the resort and registration will begin Monday, January 28 at 6:00 a.m.
Separate registration for the pre-course sessions will be on Sunday, January 27.
RegistrationTo register online, visit http://www.mayo.edu/cme/stim2013, or complete the attached registration form and return by mail or fax. The $1050 physician/$950 resident registration fee registration fee includes tuition, comprehensive electronic course syllabus, continental breakfasts, and break refreshments. Although it is not Mayo School of CPD policy to limit the number of registrants for a course, conference room facilities may necessitate closing of enrollment; therefore, early registration is advised. An email confirmation will be sent upon receipt of payment and completed registration form. Please present the confirmation letter when checking in at the meeting registration desk.
Cancellation PolicyIf you cancel your participation in this course, your registration fee, less a $75 administrative fee, will be refunded when written notification is received by Mayo School of CPD before January 14, 2013 (fax#: 507-284-0532). No refunds will be made after January 14, 2013.
Mayo School of CPD reserves the right to cancel or postpone any course due to unforeseen circumstances. In the unlikely event Mayo School of CPD must cancel or postpone this course, Mayo School of CPD will refund the registration fee, but is not responsible for any related costs, charges, or expenses to participants, including fees assessed by airline/travel/lodging agencies.

Group rates will apply three days prior to and three days after the conference dates upon availability.

TravelThe two closest airports to The Fairmont Orchid are Kona International Airport (KOA) and Hilo International Airport (ITO).
Kona International Airport (KOA) is located approximately 23 miles (45 minutes) from the hotel. Hilo International Airport (ITO) is located on the east side of the island approximately 77 miles (2 hours) from the hotel.
All car rental companies are available at the Kona International Airport. Dollar Rent-a-Car maintains a desk at the resort with cars available.
Air Taxi exclusively services the resort and your transportation request can be arranged through the Concierge.
Parking is available at the hotel. Self parking is $17 per night and valet parking is $22 per night with unlimited access.
Off-property guests may have their parking pass validated for complimentary parking when a minimum purchase of $15 is made at any restaurant or store at the hotel.
