INTRODUCTION TO TODAY’S WORSHIP
The Sundays after Epiphany continue to celebrate the revelation of
God’s glory to us as it was made known to the magi and to those
on Jordan’s banks at Jesus’ baptism—today using wedding
imagery. Our God rejoices over God’s people as those being
married rejoice over one another. By the power of the Spirit there
are gifts galore for everyone. In Christ Jesus the best wine is saved
for last. Taste and see.
Order of Service – Communion Service
WELCOME AND WORSHIP ANNOUNCEMENTS
CALL TO WORSHIP
Act of Reconciliation
P: We confess before God and one another that sometimes the choices
we make in our lives do not reflect your Spirit of love.
Silence for reflection
All: Loving and Gracious God, we confess that at times our doubts and
fears override our hope and faith. Forgive us when we lose sight of your
love and instead fall into despair and gloom. Lift up our spirits helping us
-1-
to remember the promise of new life here and now, not just the hope of
resurrection for the future. We give thanks for Jesus, who continues to
offer the walls of death in our own life.
Forgive, restore, and renew us – In the name of our risen Savior Jesus we
pray. Amen
Gathering Song ELW # 312 - Jesus Come, For We Invite You
Jesus, come! for we invite you,
guest and master, friend and Lord;
now, as once at Cana's wedding,
speak and let us hear your word:
lead us through our need or doubting,
hope be born and joy restored.
Jesus, come! transform our pleasures,
guide us into paths unknown;
bring your gifts, command your servants,
let us trust in you alone:
though your hand may work in secret,
all shall see what you have done.
Jesus, come! In new creation,
heav'n brought near by pow'r divine;
give your unexpected glory,
changing water into wine:
rouse the faith of your disciples—
come, our first and greatest Sign!
Jesus, come! Surprise our dullness,
make us willing to receive
more than we can yet imagine,
-2-
all the best you have to give:
let us find your hidden riches,
taste your love, believe, and live!
Greeting
Prayer of the Day
Lord God, source of every blessing, you showed forth your glory and led
many to faith by the works of your Son, who brought gladness and
salvation to his people. Transform us by the Spirit of his love, that we
may find our life together in him, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.
First Reading: Isaiah 62: 1-5
For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not
rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like
a burning torch. The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings
your glory; and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of
The LORD will give. You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of
the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. You shall no
more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed
Desolate; but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land
Married; for the LORD delights in you, and your land shall be married.
For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your builder marry
you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God
rejoice over you.
Psalm 36: 5-10
Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, and your faithfulness to the
clouds. Your righteousness is like the strong mountains, your justice
like the great deep; you save humankind and animals, O LORD. How
-3-
priceless is your love, O God! All people take refuge under the shadow of
your wings. They feast upon the abundance of your house; you give
them drink from the river of your delights. For with you is the well of life,
and in your light we see light. Continue your lovingkindness to those who
know you, and your favor to those who are true of heart.
Gospel Acclamation - Alleluia, Lord to whom shall we go? You have
words of eternal life. Alleluia.
Gospel John 2:1-11
On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother
of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the
wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him,
“They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what concern is
that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to
the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Now standing there were six
stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty
or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, “Fill the jars with water.” And they
filled them up to the brim. He said to them, “Now draw some out, and
take it to the chief steward.” So they took it. When the steward tasted
the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from
(though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward
called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine
first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But
you have kept the good wine until now.” Jesus did this, the first of his
signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples
believed in him.
Sermon - A God of Surprise and Delight!

Hymn of the Day ELW 880 - O God, Beyond all Praising
O God beyond all praising, we worship you today
and sing the love amazing that songs cannot repay;
for we can only wonder at ev'ry gift you send,
at blessings without number and mercies without end:
we lift our hearts before you and wait upon your word,
we honor and adore you, our great and mighty Lord.
Then hear, O gracious Savior, accept the love we bring,
that we who know your favor may serve you as our King;
and whether our tomorrows be filled with good or ill,
we'll triumph through our sorrows and rise to bless you still:
to marvel at your beauty and glory in your ways,
and make a joyful duty our sacrifice of praise.
Apostles Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.*
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
-5-
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen
PRAYERS
The Spirit of the Lord is poured out upon us in abundance and in
thankfulness we pray for the church, the world and all that God has
made.
By your spirit, make us alive in Jesus and give us the courage we need
to share our gifts of love with those around us. Unite those who profess
your name across congregations, denominations and geographic
boundaries. Open our hearts to possibilities of working together in unity
and to learn to celebrate surprising miracles. Let us see new ways of
working together with others of your Beloved children who may be
struggling alone. God of grace……..Hear our prayer.
Your creation reflects your generosity. Bless farmers, ranchers, orchard
keepers, market gardeners and all those who work in tending our land
and providing food for us. Just as Jesus blessed the wedding at Cana
with his first miracle, let us also bless one another with gifts of surprise
and delight! Make us good stewards of what we have been given. Today
we remember the people of the Fraser Valley in BC who lost land and
livestock in the recent flooding, even as they now endure yet another
atmospheric river. Give to all who have suffered great loss the courage
needed to rebuild, reminding them and us that we are all your Beloved
children. God of grace, Hear our prayer.
By your Spirit, grant wisdom, knowledge and discernment to those in
leadership at the civic, provincial and federal levels. Direct policy makers
toward compassionate decisions that build safe and just communities.
-6-
We pray for ongoing support for those agencies that help the homeless
and unemployed in this community in achieving safety, comfort, dignity
and healthcare. Lead all authorities in seeking and serving the common
good. God of grace, hear our prayer.
As Jesus provided generously in a moment of need, provide gifts of
healing for those suffering from physical or mental illnesses, isolation
and loneliness. Embrace those struggling with self-worth or facing life
transitions. We especially pray for Angela, Stella, Nels, Samantha, Hilda,
Lorraine, Erna, Darwin, Trevor, Holly, Wendy, Jordie, Martha, Ed, Helen,
Linda, Brendan, Joanne, Gordon, Raymond and others we name in our
hearts ). Remind us that nothing can separate us from your love. God of
grace, hear our prayer.
Since we have such great hope in your promises O Lord, we lift these
and all our prayers to you in confidence and faith through Jesus Christ
our Lord. Amen.
Offertory Hymn ELW 465 - As the Grains of Wheat
Refrain
As the grains of wheat once scattered on the hill
were gathered into one to become our bread;
so may all your people from all the ends of earth
be gathered into one in you.
As this cup of blessing is shared within our midst,
may we share the presence of your love. Refrain
Let this be a foretaste of all that is to come
when all creation shares this feast with you. Refrain
-7-
Offertory Prayer
Blessed are you, O God,
Sovereign of the universe.
You offer us new beginnings
and guide us on our journey.
Lead us to your table,
nourish us with this heavenly food,
and prepare us to carry your love
to a hungry world,
in the name of Christ our light.
Amen.
Great Thanksgiving – Pastor Rita
The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Life up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
ELW pg. 144 - Holy, Holy, Holy Lord
Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of pow’r and might,
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna. Hosanna.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name
of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
-8-
Lord’s Prayer – sung
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be your name,
Your kingdom come,
Your will be done,
On earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
As we forgive those
Who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
And deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,
Now and forever. Amen
Eucharistic Prayer
Invitation to Holy Communion
Come to God’s table.
There is a place for you and enough for all.
ELW 468 - Around You, O Lord Jesus
Around you, O Lord Jesus,
your own you gather still
to share the feast you give us
with grace our lives to fill.
You say to us so lovingly,
“Take, eat! This is my body!
Take, drink! This is my blood!”
We hear your invitation,
and heed, O Lord, your call;
-9-
your word of consolation
is spoken here to all.
It draws us to your loving heart;
it brings to us your blessing,
which never will depart.
We are your own forever;
until our final breath
we will be true and never
in joy, in grief, in death
depart from you, for you are still
among your people dwelling,
as you have said you will.
ELW 471 - Let Us Break Bread Together
Let us break bread together on our knees;
let us break bread together on our knees.
Refrain
When I fall on my knees,
with my face to the rising sun,
O Lord, have mercy on me.
Let us drink wine together on our knees;
let us drink wine together on our knees. Refrain
Let us praise God together on our knees;
let us praise God together on our knees. Refrain
Prayer after Communion
We give you thanks, gracious God,
for we have feasted on the abundance of your house.
Send us to bring good news
-10-
and to proclaim your favor to all,
strengthened with the richness of your grace
in your Son, Jesus Christ.
Amen.
Blessing and Announcements
God, who leads you in pathways of righteousness,
who rejoices over you, and who calls you by name,
☩ bless your going out and your coming in, today and forever.
Amen.
Sending Song ELW 537 - On Our Way Rejoicing
On our way rejoicing
gladly let us go.
Christ our Lord has conquered;
vanquished is the foe.
Christ without, our safety;
Christ within, our joy;
who, if we be faithful,
can our hope destroy?
Refrain
On our way rejoicing;
as we forward move,
hearken to our praises,
O blest God of love!
Unto God the Father
joyful songs we sing;
unto God the Savior
thankful hearts we bring;
-11-
unto God the Spirit
bow we and adore,
on our way rejoicing
now and evermore. Refrain
Dismissal
Go with Christ into a weary world.
Share the good news.
Thanks be to God.
