Who Started 2D design...Didn’t everybody ?

The programme that schools use is called :

TechSoft UK Ltd was founded in the mid 1980s and has established itself as the market leading supplier of CAD and CAD/CAM systems (Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacture) to schools in the UK.

Designs to Inspire and Make• Now if everyone would grab a

computer and Log in• Start • In programme search Put 2D

Design:• Fingers crossed this brings a clear

intersections• Isometric

What next…

• Laser cutter – Black/red: cutting/engraving lines– Most materials

• Plotter cutter– Up to thick card

• 3D Snowflake• Colour fill • Laminating

• Stars – pentagon + line tool• Tessellation – wrapping paper

Cross-Curricular Applications• Science (Chemistry)

– Crystalline structure– Rocks/minerals

• Maths– Lines of symmetry/mirror symmetry– Pattern/repetition– Angles– Geometry/shapes

• Geography– Weather

• Art/Design – Jewellery, decorative body pieces

Pro’s and Con’s of Using 2D in Schools

Quiz

• Name 3 tools used to create a snowflake in 2D design?

• To make a five pronged snowflake what is the angle of rotation? Number of repeats?

• Give two examples of cross-curricular applications of the snowflake activity.

Packaging

• Why packaging?• Why boxes?• Can you think of examples?• Isometric – making a 3D object in 2 dimensions.• Maths – geometry, numeracy• Food Tech – practical usage• Graphics / Product design• Marketing/advertising

Tools

• Gridlock on (1cm spacing default)• Line • Tab placements

Make your box

• Print out net• Cut/glue

Usage & Extensions

• Pyramid net – Toblerone• Rectangle net• Materials used to make the box

-sustainable/recyclable boxes.• Egg box design• Toys – jack in the box

Further Possibilities of 2D Design

Tessellation.

Solid Works

Solid works is the 3D big brother of 2D Design. Aimed at Industry and

Professionals. Able to do more detailed designs and test real world conditions so

you get it right before you build it. Photorealistic renderings, automatic

interference and collision detection make sure all parts fit together before you

build a physical prototype thus reducing cost and speeding up the design process

to market.
