Newsflash:Roadsarenotdesignedforlargeemergencyvehicles.Androllovers,althoughpreventableinmanycases,arestillamajorcauseofon­dutyinjuriesanddeaths.

Whileonly3percentofemergencyvehiclecrashesarerollovers(single­vehicleaccidentwheretherolloveristhefirstharmfulevent),33percentoffatalcrashesare.Sowhatarethefactorsinrollovers,andhowcanwemitigatethemsowearriveateveryemergencysafely?

TheissuescameunderthespotlightduringasessionatFire­RescueMed,heldbytheIAFC'sEMSsection.

Mostlanewidthshoveraround12feet,givingtypical7­to8­foot­widefireapparatusandambulancesonlyabout2feetofwiggleroomoneachside.That'snotverymuchwhenyouconsiderthechallengesofdrivinglarge,heavy,boxytruckstoanemergency.
