{3 Pitfalls for New Digital Nomads

Firsthand lessons from Josh Amore

@AmoreJosh

In 2015, I spent three months in Chiang Mai, Thailand..

I was starting my new life as a digital nomad..

This was supposed to be long-term. That didn’t happen..

Instead of building something serious I..

Drank too much cheap whiskey..

And enjoyed delicious Thai food..

This is out of character for me. The three key reasons for my failure:

1. Accomodation

I stayed in a 4 star serviced complex (a long-term hotel). The majority of residents were expats.Productivity is difficult, if not impossible, in this environment.

Lesson Learned: Stay in a ‘real’ house or apartment. It’s cheaper and a better space for productivity.

2. Planning & Research

Before leaving, I planned to spend 8 hours a day working from cafes. This didn’t happen. Working like this takes a lot of practice.

This is a common complaint online. I didn’t pay attention to the wisdom of others.

Lesson Learned: Take note of the common issues when researching and keep your assumptions in check.

2.

3. Commitment

I gave myself three months to trial the digital nomad lifestyle. This was my biggest mistake.

The trial made my experience feel temporary. It was an internal constraint.

Lesson Learned: Get serious and commit 100% of your time and energy to the long-term goal. No trial periods - dive in.
