When Hilary Swank played a female boxer in the
Hollywood film Million Dollar Baby, she had to do
more than just learn how to box. The slim actress
had 90 days to make her body look like that of a
professional fighter. 1 By the time filming
began, Swank had put on over nine kilos of muscle
and she definitely looked the part.
There is nothing new about actors changing their
appearance for parts. They have been doing it for
centuries. In ancient Greece, actors transformed
themselves into tragic or comic figures with specially
designed masks. Moreover, actors who played tragic
roles sometimes even wore boots to make themselves
look taller and more impressive than the other
actors on the stage. And did you know that right
through to the 17th century, all female roles were
played by men. 2
Today, male actors still take on female roles and are
often willing to go to great lengths to really look the
part. In the musical comedy Hairspray for example,
John Travolta gave a convincing performance as a
woman weighing 140 kilos. It wasn’t easy. 3 And he also needed to use all his acting skills to
play the role of a woman convincingly. The actor
even showed friends some scenes from the film to
see if he had been successful. He was thrilled when
they did not recognise him!
4 One of the first actors to put on weight and
change his appearance was Robert De Niro, who
put on about 15 kilos to play the lead in the 1980
film about a boxer called Raging Bull. Since then,
people in the film industry have referred to such
changes in an actor’s physical appearance as “doing
a De Niro”.
Years later, George Clooney “did a De Niro” and
put on the extra kilos he needed for the part of a
secret agent in the film Syriana. Eddie Murphy and
Gwyneth Paltrow both went through hours of
make-up and put on fat suits when they
appeared in the movies The Nutty Professor
and Shallow Hal. Tom Cruise also surprised
his fans in the film Tropic Thunder. 5
Why are actors prepared to go through
such dramatic changes to their physical
appearance? Usually it is so that they
can play a wide variety of roles. For
example, a young actress might want to
show that she has the skill to play older
characters too. 6 Many actors realise
that this means sitting for hours with a
make-up artist, or changing their
appearance by gaining or losing weight. They think it’s a small price to pay for success.
A The naturally good-looking actor appears in this film as a fat, bald man with a moustache and beard.
B Imagine – even the beautiful Juliet in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet was played by a young boy.
C Gaining and losing weight is not the only way in which actors transform their appearance.
D It took hours to put on the make-up and padding he needed.
E This involved a daily routine of working out for around five hours every day, six days a week.
F Sometimes actors have gone on special diets to gain weight in order to look right for a role they are playing.
