Practitioner Mentorship Module 3.1

The UL Approach To Detox For Lyme & Complex Chronic Diseases

With Hillary Thing, MS, LAc., Cert. Herbalist

3.1: Detoxification for Lyme & Complex Chronic Diseases

Learning Objectives: • Understand the relationship between Lyme

and toxicity, and why detoxification is so fundamental to treatment;

• Define “toxin” and look at both external and internal sources of toxicity;

• Examine the signs and symptoms of toxicity; • Learn the core strategy that constitutes

effective cleansing, a 2-step process called “Awaken & Release”.

Lyme infection & toxins are an interwoven disease process.

Toxin = anything that creates obstruction in the body.

External Sources:• Heavy metals • Chemicals • Pesticides • Air and water pollution • Medications, drugs, alcohol • Vaccinations • Preservatives, additives • Plastics • VOC’s, indoor pollutants • Radiation • Occupational hazards

HEAVY METALS• MERCURY – dental fillings, vaccinations, fish, cosmetics,

pesticides, paint, plastics, fungicides, fabric softeners, adhesives, floor polishes, laxatives, tattoos, and hair dye.

• LEAD – gasoline, dyes, paints, old plumbing, pottery, insecticides, tobacco smoke, textiles, auto exhaust, canned fruit juices, crayons, hair dye and mascara, air pollution.

• ALUMINUM – aluminum cans, cookware, vaccinations, baking powder, deodorants, white flour, tap water, stomach antacids, toothpaste, foil, laxatives, auto parts and exhaust, beer, cigarette filters, food coloring, dental amalgams, milk products.

• CADMIUM – cigarette smoke, tobacco, coffee, gasoline and motor oil, pots and pans, metal pipes, tap water, rubber, fertilizer, dental alloys, batteries, candy, refined cereals and grains, fungicides, plastics, processed foods, paint, pesticides, pharmaceutical and recreational drugs.

CHEMICAL TOXINS

• CARBON MONOXIDE – auto exhaust, cigarette smoke, smog

• FORMALDEHYDE – indoor environments - foam insulation, particle board, pressed wood products, carpet backings

• DDT – soil, carpeting • BENZENE – cigarette smoke, gasoline, inks, paints,

plastics, detergents, pharmaceuticals and dyes • CHLOROFORM – cleaners, floor polishes, lacquers • TOLUENE – petroleum products, copy paper,

carpet glue, perfumes • TRICHLOROETHYLENE (TCE) – dry cleaning, metal

degreasers

FOOD, SOIL, AIR & WATER

• PESTICIDES – ammonia, arsenic, benzene, chlorine, dioxins, formaldehyde, methanol; some are persistent organic pollutants (POPs)

• PRESERVATIVES – in foods, body care products; sugar substitutes, MSG, dyes, nitrates, endocrine disruptors (propyl parabena, BHA, BHT, et al.)

• SOIL – heavy metals, pesticides, petroleum hydrocarbons

• AIR – carbon monoxide, ozone, lead, nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter, sulfur dioxide

• WATER POLLUTION – chlorine, flouride, pharmaceuticals, detergents, insecticides, etc.

DRUGS & ALCOHOL

• PHARMACEUTICALS – Vaccinations – Antibiotics – Other medications

• ALCOHOL • TOBACCO • RECREATIONAL DRUGS

INDOOR ENVIRONMENT

• PLASTICS • VOC’S • MYCOTOXINS • RADON • COOKING & HEATING • CARPETS, FLOORING, GLUES & FINISHES • ELECTROMAGNETIC POLLUTION

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH HAZARDS

• Non-organic farming • Construction & building • Auto mechanics • Janitorial and cleaning • Highway and road maintenance • Pest control • Hair and nail salons • Mortuary • Office workers

Toxin = anything that creates obstruction in the body.

Internal Sources:• Stress • Emotions

– Daily negative unprocessed thoughts and feelings

– Past traumatic events

• Food stagnation – Rich foods – General overconsumption – Food allergens

• Leaky gut • Endotoxins from bacteria

life cycle • Die-0ff

TOXIC CONGESTION IS:

➢ Physical ➢Mental ➢ Emotional ➢ Energetic ➢ Spiritual

Symptoms of Lyme = Symptoms of a toxic body

• Headache • Muscle pain • Joint pain / arthritis • Fatigue • Brain fog • Depression / mood • GERD / nausea • Constipation or diarrhea

• Gas and bloating • Sleeping problems • Skin rashes • Alzheimer’s / Parkinson’s • Hormonal imbalances • Allergies and chemical

sensitivities • Chronic fatigue • Poor circulation

“50% of the health restoration that every Lyme sufferer seeks will come from effectively eliminating the toxins and reducing the sources of the toxins, i.e., bacteria and toxic lifestyle. The other 50% of healing will revolve around restoring structure and function and optimal coherence within the body, mind, and spirit.” - Dr. David Jernigan

“It's so critically important, in my opinion, to work as hard on getting the toxins out of the body as working on getting the microbes out of the body.“ - Dr. Lee Cowden

The Genetic Factor

• HLA DRB1, 15, DQ6 and/or other HLA genes • Highly sensitive to neurotoxins like mold, fungus, by-products of Borrelia, Babesia and other infections, toxic metals, pesticides, industrial chemicals, and more. • Antibiotics don’t work as well

Recap: The Lyme-Toxin Disease Complex

• Pre-existing and on-going exposure to the external sources of toxicity

• Pre-existing and on-going exposure to the internally-generated sources of toxicity

• Toxins produced by the infections • Toxins released with die-off • Auto-toxicity via the gut • Weakness of the liver

4 Pillars of Effective Detoxifica

What is possible through detoxification?

In order to create healing, one must create the conditions within the body

that will allow healing to unfold.

THE 4 PILLARS OF EFFECTIVE DETOXIFICATION

1. Reduce exposure. 2. Awaken the waste. 3. Release the waste. 4. Commitment & Consistency.

1. REDUCE EXPOSURE

✓Awareness of the sources of toxicity in one’s life.

✓Make a cleaner choice: Top 10 Ways to Reduce Toxin Exposure

✓How Toxic Am I? Self-test ✓http://scorecard.goodguide.com/

2. Awaken The Waste

➢Toxins

➢Mucus congestion

➢Acid accumulations

➢Microbes

➢Food stagnation

➢Old emotional chemistry and tension.

HYDRATION +

ALKALINITY • Water • Juicing • Veggies • Alkalizing and mineral

supplementation • Negative ions • High frequency

energy

3. Release the Waste

Via 1 or more avenues of elimination:

• Bowels

• Urination

• Sweating

• Breathing

• Liver and lymph are part of the housecleaning system but do not have exit doors.

4. Commitment & Consistency

• Commit to cleansing as an on-going part of the treatment plan. • Like exercise, consistency is required to see the results you want.

Holistic Cleansing Lifestyle = a way of life that purifies the whole self
