Cultural Interactions

The interactions between American Indians and Europeans sometimes led to cooperation and other times resulted in conflict.

How did the American Indians and Europeans interact with each other?

The Spanish conquered and enslaved the Native Americans.

They brought Christianity to the New World.

They also brought European diseases.

The French established trading posts. They also spread the Christian

religion.

The English established settlements and claimed ownership of land.

They learned farming techniques from American Indians.

They also traded with the American Indians.

The American Indians taught farming techniques to European settlers.

They believed that land was to be shared or used, but not owned.

The American Indians and European explorers did get along in a few ways:

Europeans brought weapons and metal farm tools.

Trade

Crops

But they also had conflicts over many things.
