Room 4

My Background• This is my 25th year teaching.• Year 21 at Ocean View.• I’ve taught almost every grade level, & I am especially happy to be back in 5th

grade. It is such a fabulous time in your child’s education.• Clear Multiple Subject Credential, M.A. in Educational Leadership,

Administration.• As a teacher, I am firm but fair. I truly care for the kids and they know it, even

when I discipline. I work on the whole child, not just the academics. I stress good character. I like to laugh and be silly at times, and at other times I run a very tight ship. I want learning to be fun and engaging, but also there are serious times for focus and practice. Not always fun, but necessary for mental strength. Students need to be able to do both.

• More personally, I’m a wife and mother of 3, and a grandmother of 2, with #3 on the way, due Christmas Eve.

• We are active in our church, WACC right up the hill, and I love reading, writing, cooking & decorating. We have a funny dog and cat. You will hear stories.

~Daily Schedule~ • 8:05 Students walk to class from lunch tables.• 8:15 – 10:15 English Language Arts, Social Studies• 10:15 – 10:30 Recess• 10:35 – 11:00 SSR (Silent Reading)• 11:00 - 12:10 Math • 12:15 – 12:55 Lunch• 1:00 – 2:25 Science, PE, Study Time, Art • Library is on Wednesday, 11:30 – 12:15• PE Mon. 1:00-1:40, Thurs. 1:45-2:25• 2:25 – Dismissal @ East Gate for most, or sitting in

front with a sibling.

colonies, revolutionary war, government, and the westward movement.

• Students are also required to memorize the 50 states and capitals. State packets are done at regular intervals throughout the year and focus on a particular region of the U.S.A.

• One of the traditions in fifth grade is the ABC book. Beginning in March, students will choose a state and write a whole book about it. They will be supported with organizers, ideas, and materials throughout this exciting process. The book will be due on the day of Open House.

• Another fifth grade tradition is Colonial Day during which the students travel back in time to take part in colonial traditions, dress, food, games, and trades. Please plan on taking part in this special day as parental help is essential in order for Colonial Day to take place.

• Units of Study: weather, space, matter and energy, life science.

• A variety of instructional strategies are utilized, including hands-on experiments, text books, research projects, as well as an emphasis on study skills.

• Fifth grade students are tested on the 4th and 5th grade science standards on the CST.
