Coach vs Athlete Brain

The rules are the same

Your Challenge

• How do I train intelligent movement?

• If you can’t answer that question, you’re not coaching

What is Intelligent Movement?

• The right action

• At the right time

• For the right reasons

• Delivered under pressure

It’s THE hardest thing to do

What about intelligent movement?

What are the rules of learning?

What are the rules of feedback?

What are the rules of rest?

What do you really mean by “teams” & “culture”?

There are no shortcuts

The rules of learning

Morning Afternoon

The rules of learning

• You space things out

• You mix them up

• You STOP BEFORE they “get it”

Bad learning gives under pressure

Why space out the learning?

It allows variety and the learning is deeper

But why stop before they “get it”?

You DO NOT LEARN DURINGTRAINING

Stopping before they get it makes the brain work

Result: deeper learning

The rules of learning

• You space things out• You mix them up• You STOP BEFORE they “get it”

• Benefits: Deep Learning; robust under pressure

• Cost: Doesn’t “feel” good

Resilience under pressure

The rules of feedback

• Immediate

•Precise

• It is NOT a conversation

The rules of feedback

Hebbian Learning

Cells that fire together wiretogether

The rules of feedback

The rules of feedback

• Immediate• Precise• It is NOT a conversation

• Benefit: Efficient error correction• Cost: Embedding learning mistakes

(tennis/slalom examples)

Why?The brain is a story teller.

It’s our job to dictate the story

The rules of rest

Why space out the learning?

You build muscle…WHEN?

So…

• You build skills

• You build memory

• You build “brain strength”

• When?

A Night (a nap)

Verbal/Declarative

Motor/Procedure

What Happens in Sleep?

What Happens in Sleep?

Do you over train the body?

What do you really mean by “teams” & “culture”?

C - CHANGE

It’s what you choose to do with what you’ve got and who you choose to be that

will change the world

Don’t try to be someone else, just be better at being you.

“It’s not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumble or where the doer of great deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is in the arena, who’s face is marred by dust and sweat and blood. Who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions and spends himself in a worthy cause. Who knows, at the best, the triumphs of high achievement and who, at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly. So his place will never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.” – Theodore Roosevelt
