“ANGOLA GOSSIPS” On Monday, June 24th at 7 p.m., the Evans Historical Society will host a program on Angola and its people. Mrs. Fran Vacanti will present an interesting and humor-ous presentation on the village and its citizens who lived in Angola many years ago. Mrs. Vacanti is 90 years old and has resided in the village since 1927. She will pro-vide a glimpse of the various business that existed as well as the many events that occurred through the decades. Much of her discussion will be “people centered” as she talks about the stores, events, and families in the village. Joe Pisarski, President of the Society, indicated that her presentation will be very entertaining as she mentions the folks, the families and the stories the residents shared that became an integral part of ‘old’ Angola. He stated that some people may think these old stories are gossip - and maybe they were! However, today they are legends and folklore that are very interesting an enjoyable. The public is invited, and admission is free. Refresh-ments are served after the program, and everyone is en-couraged to meet Mrs. Vacanti and share more stories. The session will be held at the Evans Historical Society Museum on Route 5 and North Main Street in Evans Cen-ter.

EVANS FORCE WINNING STREAK ENDS AT FIVE
The Evans 12U Force Girls Softball team was carrying a five game Metro League winning streak into a Satur-day night game against the Grand Island Vipers on June 8. But the Vipers traveled a long way, but were not going home without showing the Force their muscle. The Vipers scored early and often as they bounded the Force 20-1 in 5 innings. The Force managed only 4 hits as Evie Butlak went 1 for 1, Ellie Hale and Grace Barker each went 1 for 2 and Ruby Thomas went 1 for 3 with the Force’s only RBI. The Force quickly rebounded on Monday June 10th with a hard fought win against rival Xtreme-Miller 5-2. Ruby Thomas pitched 7 strong innings allowing only 2 hits and 3 walks while striking out 14 batters. Ruby pushed her season strikeout total to 70 in 34 innings. Ruby was also strong at the plate with going 3 for 3 with 1 dou-ble, 1 triple and 3 RBI. Caitlin Burbige and Emma Kist each added hits while Evie Butlak celebrated her birthday going 3 for 4 and scoring 2 runs.

SCS GETS NEW PLAYGROUND Southtowns Catholic School is lucky enough to have 2 playgrounds. The new & improved preschool playground was the Eagle Scout project of Matthew Scherer. The new playground includes; a tunnel, chalkboard, tic tac toe table, 2 areas for slides, picnic tables, 2 see saws, a king of the mountain hill and a special place for circle time stories.Matthew attended Southtowns Catholic school for 4 years and his family belongs to Blessed John Paul II Parish so he felt this would be a great way to give back to my community. Matthew became a Life Scout and had started thinking about a project in order to become an Eagle Scout. At that time his sisters religious ed class was cleaning the preschool equipment that had been vandal-ized with spray paint. Shortly after that a fence went up to prevent further vandalism. When he discovered that area was the preschool playground he thought it would be a great project to add to what they already had and make it better. From planning to finishing the project, it took Mat-thew about 20 hours. The ideas for the playground came from a suggestion from his aunt about a “natural” play-ground. To raise money for the project, he wrote letters asking for the donations and visited local businesses to talk to the owners and managers. Matthew belongs to Troop 400 out of St. Peter and Paul parish in Hamburg. He is a freshman at Frontier High School. The requirements for becoming an Eagle Scout are: Earn a total of 21 required merit badges, serve actively in a position of responsibility ( he is the Order of the Arrow troop representative) and lastly plan, develop and show leadership to others in a service project. The VFW Post 5798, in conjuction with the new Angola Pennysaver, takes pride in recognizing Laura
Heimburg as the June 2013 honoree for the Lake Shore Central School District “Employee of the Month” award.
Laura is shown in the photo below accepting a check for $100 from Joseph Catalano, Commander of VFW Post 5798.
Congratulations, Laura, for all that you have done for the district for over 25 years.
Wishing you the very best in your retirement!
Laura Heimburg has been serving the Lake Shore Central School District as an Account Clerk Typist for over 24 25 years. In her business office position, she has managed the District’s approved vendor list and assisted the Purchasing Agent with the District’s bidding and purchasing functions. She coordinates that paperwork process for all District purchases, and is responsible for the payment of the District’s bills. Laura’s attention to detail and her friendly demeanor have provided her with the necessary tools to deal with vendors, contractors and suppliers and to maintain the District’s strong credit rating by paying its bills on time and correctly. She has helped the District migrates migrate its business operations to new accounting software several times during her career, and is always willing to do what is needed to make improvements in the District’s business operations.
Laura is a 1969 graduate of Lake Shore Central School District. Her two daughters Dr. Jamie Molinaro and Kelly Sureda, are also District graduates. Her hobbies include walking, golfing, and being an active member in her church’s bell choir and vocal choir. Laura’s family is very important to her. She will be retiring at the end of the 2012-13 school year and has plans to spend much more time with her family - especially her two year old grandson Ross who lives in Atlanta.
While the District wishes Laura all the best in her retirement, she will surely be missed in the District Office. Her smiling face and friendly personality will be difficult to replace. We thank Laura for all of her hard work and years of dedication to the District.

Safety Tips For Summer Fun
The weather is heating up and Americans are heading outdoors to soak up the fun. Warm weather enthusiasts should keep safety on the top of their minds when they’re out camping, boating and barbecuing. CSA Group, a leader in testing and certification, wants to remind Americans to stay safe all sum-mer with the following tips.
Camping Stoves and Lanterns* Fuel-burning camping equipment, such as stoves, lanterns and outdoor cookers, should only be lit outdoors and at least 10 feet (3 meters) from tents, combustible materials and vehicles. Never light a stove or lantern inside a tent or vehicle.
* Before use, carefully inspect parts for leaks, blockages or damage.
* Keep loose, flammable clothing away from open flames. Carefully monitor children and pets around stoves and lanterns.
Boats and Cabins* Ensure boats and cabins are equipped with proper emergency safety equipment, including first aid kits and fire extinguishers, carbon monoxide detectors and fire alarms.
* When first opening your cabin, carefully inspect all appliances for damage from rodents or insects.
* Always wear a personal flotation device. Never consume alcohol while operating any vehicle.
Outdoor Gas Barbeques* Before firing up your barbecue for the first time, carefully inspect burners and burner tubes for blockages due to dirt, grease, insects or rust buildup. Clean or replace any blocked parts or have a certified technician make repairs.
* Propane cylinders must be inspected and re-qualified every 12 years in the United States. A date stamp on the cylinder indicates when it was last qualified. Don’t use a rusty or damaged cylinder. If in doubt, have your tank replaced.
* When purchasing or installing a gas barbecue, make sure that it carries the mark of an ap-proved certification organization, such as CSA Group, indicating the barbecue has been tested to applicable national standards.

Keeping Kids Active Once The School Year Ends
In many ways, today’s kids have busier schedules than any previous generation of young-sters. Many extracurricular activities, including sports, require a nearly year-round commitment, and the dual-income household has landed many kids in afterschool programs where kids tend to their schoolwork or engage in various activities that keep them from resting on their laurels. But those busy schedules get a lot less hectic when the school year ends. Once school is out, kids used to a full schedule might find themselves with lots of time on their hands. Though it’s good for kids to squeeze in some rest and relaxation during their summer break, it’s also important for kids to stay active so they don’t develop poor habits as the summer goes on. In addition, the American Psychological Association notes that kids who are physically active are more capable of coping with stress and tend to have higher self-esteem than kids who do not include physical activity as part of their regular routines. The following are a few suggestions for parents looking for ways to keep their kids active throughout the summer while still allowing them to recharge their batteries after a long school year.* Plan an active vacation. Summer is when many families go on vacation, so why not choose a vacation that involves more than napping poolside? Though it’s still good to leave some time for relaxation, find a locale where you can embrace activities like snorkeling, hiking, kayaking, or other adventures that get you and your youngsters off the poolside chaise and out explor-ing. Such a trip might inspire kids to embrace an activity more fully, getting them off the couch not only while they’re on vacation but also when they return home for the rest of summer.* Teach kids to garden. Gardening might be seen as a peaceful and relaxing hobby, but it still requires a lot of elbow grease and hard work that pays physical dividends. A garden must be planted, hoed, weeded, and watered, and gardening gets kids out of the house to enjoy the great outdoors. When growing a vegetable garden, kids might embrace the chance to be directly involved in the foods that will eventually end up on their dinner tables. Parents can embrace this as an opportunity to teach the value of eating locally-produced foods and the positive impact such behavior has on the environment.* Go swimming. Few adults who work in offices haven’t looked out their windows on a sunny summer day and thought how nice it would be to be spending that afternoon making a few laps in a lake, at the beach or in a pool. Kids have the same daydreams during the summer, so take a day off every so often and take the kids for an afternoon of swimming. Swimming is a great activity that exercises the entire body, including the shoulders, back, legs, hips, and abdominals. In addition, swimming helps kids and adults alike maintain a healthy weight while also improving their cardiovascular health. It’s hard for some people to find a place to swim once the warm weather departs, so take advantage of the summer weather and go swimming as often as possible while the kids are not in school.* Limit how much time kids spend watching television, playing video games or surfing the In-ternet. Many of today’s kids are as tech savvy as they are busy. But it’s important that kids don’t spend too much time online or on the couch watching television or playing video games. Such activities are largely sedentary, and they can set a bad precedent for the months ahead, even when the school year begins once again. Parents should limit how much time their youngsters spend in front of the television or the computer during summer vacation, keeping track and turning the TV or computer off if they suspect kids are spending too much time staring at the screen instead of being active. Kids might not love it when you turn their video games off or minimize their access to social media, but explain the limitations at the onset of summer and let kids know you expect them to be physically active even if it is summer vacation.

Summer Fun Close To Home
Summer revelers often take to the skies, rails and waves to embark on a vacation adventure. With the kids out of school and relaxed hours at the workplace, individuals and families gener-ally find that summer is the ideal time to plan a getaway. For those who find they don’t have the funds this year, or simply prefer to stay closer to home, there are likely many different local events to enjoy instead.
Many people will be making this summer the year of the staycation. With the average price of gasoline hovering around the $4 mark, according to the AAA Auto Group, you may be among the individuals planning to keep vacation and weekend activities limited to a certain radius around your house. What many people seldom realize is that the warm-weather season is a prime time for local offerings from different organizations in the community -- many of which are low-cost and nearby.
Oftentimes, all it takes is thumbing through the “Where to Go” section of the newspaper to find a host of different community offerings happening in the weeks to come. Chances are your neighborhood is hosting one or more of these different types of community events.
* Fireworks display: Whether for Independence Day or just to mark the start of a summer week-end, towns often host vibrant fireworks displays. Coastal towns may have them at the beach or boardwalk area, while inland areas may have a specific field or town center location where they can be observed.
* Carnival: You need not travel to the theme park several miles away to enjoy a bit of chills and thrills. There may be one or several carnivals taking place nearby this year. Many churches host a carnival to raise funds. There also may be county fairs that feature their share of thrill rides and carnival test-of-skill games. Of course, the carnival food that goes with the event is also something to look forward to.
* Park activities: From hiking excursions to garden tours, the private or government-subsidized parks may issue an events schedule with many different activities. Some have theater under the stars or camp-out movie nights. Others may have wine- and cheese-tasting soirees. These parks may have exhibition centers that can be visited any time of the year.
* Summer camps: Many childcare centers and other organizations offer summer camp pro-grams. Research this option early on so you can ensure a place for your child should you choose to sign up.
* Food festivals: Towns often host different food festivals where local vendors can put their wares on display and happy residents can sample to their hearts’ delight.
* Concerts: The summer season is certainly one for concerts. If you don’t happen to live right near a sports arena or another music venue, you may be able to enjoy local bands at clubs and restaurants. Some towns also have a performance stage where they invite performers to play week after week. Who knows, your favorite musician may show up for an acoustic or intimate performance night.
* Breakfasts and brunches: Different organizations host fundraising food events. The entire family can eat out at a fraction of the cost of going to a restaurant and benefit a good cause in the process.
* Street fairs and block parties: Part of the fun of summer is getting outdoors and socializing in the community. Street fairs with foods on a stick and even neighborhood-based block parties enable you to get together and enjoy a little fun really close to home.
* Tours and parades: Although parades often coincide with major holidays, some towns host carnival-type parades for the community. Children may be able to ride on a fire truck or explore the workings of a police cruiser.
There are plenty of enjoyable activities that could be taking place right in your own backyard this summer. Consult the newspaper, online bulletins or a community newsletter to keep abreast of the different events that may be coming your way.
