Introduction• If you don’t have a LinkedIn profile– You’re lacking a valuable job search tool– LinkedIn is a way to market yourself to the world
• It doesn't take long to create a great profile – Or, to overhaul your profile
• Prepare to follow the first of the 7 Tips for Creating a Highly Effective LinkedIn Profile
Getting Started:
Turn off public broadcasts while fine-tuning your profile:
1) Mouse-over your tiny profile picture in the upper-right
2) Click "Privacy & Settings"
3) See the "Privacy Controls" section (cont.)
Getting Started (cont.):
4) Click the hyperlink: - "Turn on/off your activity broadcasts"
5) Uncheck box: - "Let people know when you change…"
6) Lastly, click the blue "Save changes" button
Tip 1: Create a Custom URL
1) On your profile, in the box with your name & picture- Click the gray "Edit" button
2) A URL will appear below your profile picture - Click the word “Edit,” to its right
3) On the new page, look to the bottom right - You will see: “Your public profile URL”

4) Click "Customize your public profile URL"5) In the pop-up box, enter your desired profile URL
- Type after the / symbol- Consider using your name (e.g. /first.last )
7) Click the "Set Custom URL" button to save
Tip 2: Use a Quality Profile Photo
• Your LinkedIn photo doesn’t have to be stuffy– It should be industry appropriate
• If you're looking for a job as a lawyer– Wear a suit or other formal attire
• If applying as a programmer at a relaxed startup– A polo or blouse, is likely fine
• If in doubt, it’s generally safer to be overly formal
Tip 2: Use a Quality Profile Photo cont.
• Use a professional or quality amateur photo– Ensure you’re the only one in the photo– The background shouldn't be busy or distracting– Check for optimal lighting and contrast
• Size LinkedIn picture to a square between– 200 x 200 pixels (2.67 x 2.67 inches) & 500 x 500 pixels (6.67 x 6.67 inches)
Tip 3:
Compose a Great Headline• Headlines summarize in a line what you represent– They’re your chance to grab attention
• Scroll through other profiles for inspiration– Those within your industry with similar roles
• Consider phrasing; for example: – "Candy Store Owner" vs. "Owner & Head Chocolatier"

Compose a Great Headline cont.
• Include keywords in your headline– Increase the odds your profile will surface in searches
• Your headline is not set in stone– Adapt your headline over time – Swap out different keywords and phrases • Measure effectiveness • Keep an archive of past headlines
