SINGLE-REPLACEMENT REACTIONS

A single replacement reaction is when atoms of one element replace the atoms of another compound.

(Please now take out your periodic tables and flip them over to the back. Look at the bottom right corner.)

BALANCING SINGLE-REPLACEMENT REACTIONS

To balance this, balance as you would any other reaction.

Cl2 + NaBr NaCl + Br2

Cl2 + 2NaBr 2NaCl + Br2

PRACTICE QUESTIONS

1.) What is the formula -before and after the reaction- when Lithium replaces Hydrogen in Hydrochloric acid?

2Li + 2HCl 2LiCl + H2

2.) What is the name of the compound and element when Aluminum replaces Hydrogen in the compound Water?

No Reaction!

3.) Name 3 elements that Sodium CAN’T replace in a compound

Calcium, Potassium, and Lithium

WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN?

Usually, a solid is added to a compound. An element with a high activity level will only replace elements with a lower activity level.

HOMEWORK QUESTION:

If you have Mercury (Hg) and Water (H2O), what will the outcome be if a Single-Replacement Reaction occurred?

(Hint: Use the table on the back of your Periodic Table!)
