Safety and Prevention Tips
Help reduce the risk of damage by properly maintaining your home and taking steps to avoid some of the
common causes of loss.
Preventing FiresSmall Appliances
• Turn off and unplug all appliances after use.
• All appliances should have thermal protection devices (standard in new models).
Fireplaces
• Make sure flue is clean and well-maintained.
• Install chimney cap to prevent blockage caused by leaves, sticks and animals.
• Use licensed contractors to install wood stoves, other appliances or additions. This will ensure building codes and clearances are followed.
Electrical Outlets and Power Strips• Do not overload or connect one power strip
to another.• Replace immediately if there are any cracks
or damage.• Make sure the power strip does not exceed the
maximum voltage capacity for the outlet.
Heating Systems and Dryers• Have dryer and washer professionally inspected
every five years.• Clean out lint after every load of clothes.• Replace all plastic vents with metal vents.• Maintain your furnace with annual inspections.
Oil or Paint Rags• Place used rags in a metal can filled with water
and seal the can.• Immediately remove can from the dwelling until
it can be disposed of in accordance with local laws and regulations. For more information on house-hold hazardous waste disposal, contact your local environmental, health, or solid waste agency.
• Do not store unused products inside the home.
Avoiding Water DamageDishwasher• Check the gasket regularly and look underneath
the dishwasher for signs of leaking or water damage.
• Have your dishwasher inspected once a year.
All Appliance Hoses and Plumbing Fittings• Check hoses and fittings for breakage, crimping
or bending, which could lead to water damage.• Replace plastic and aluminum washing machine
hoses with copper or stainless steel.• If your refrigerator has an ice machine or water
dispenser, the hose from the wall should be made of braided copper.
Fire Protection Sprinklers, Water Dispensers and Water Heaters• Inspect these devices on a regular basis to make
sure they are in good working condition and do not show signs of deterioration or breakage.
If You Have Damage to Your Home:
1. Call Travelers to report your claim as soon as possible.

• Call us at 800.252.4633 (800.CLAIM33) .
2. Protect your property from further damage by arranging for reasonable, temporary repairs as soon as possible (for example, boarding up broken windows). Do not make any permanent repairs until the insurance adjuster has had a chance to review the damage.
3. Keep an accurate record of all temporary repair expenses so they can be added to your claim. In addition, keep a record of any other expenses that may be considered for possible reimbursement.
4. Determine the damage to your personal property contents. Separate damaged and undamaged property, and make a written list of damaged items. Be as detailed as you can. Include any photos or videos you may have taken as part of your inventory.
