I hope everyone enjoyed and participated in some way in Engineer’s week 2015. From my perspective the week was bustling with activities and opportunities to promote our profession and be a part of critical conversations. We had a fantastic release event and training for the 2015 ASCE Report Card on Utah’s Infrastructure on Tuesday February 24th. Thank you to all who participated, and especially to all who were involved in the preparation of this report. I think the coverage of the release was better than we could have ever expected. I will work on posting a link to all of the media coverage we have received to the section website for those who are interested to review. The report card and the summary brochure are also located on the section website. Please use this information with your local decision makers at city, county, state, and national levels to increase their awareness of the

continual need for investment. It cannot be overstated that we need to step further out of our shells as civil engineers and be a part of the conversation on how monies will be spent for preserving and protecting our infrastructure. Please use this report as a tool to help you in these conversations. We will now start looking forward to the section meeting in May. We have tentatively planned for a part day conference likely to be held a Snowbird resort. There will be several speakers, focusing on the water industry in the state. We are hoping to offer 3 to 5 PDH hours as a part of this conference as well as a catered lunch and an exciting keynote speaker. Please mark your calendars and plan to join us for a least a part of the conference. More details will be available by the end of the month. Thanks again for all you do. we are pleased that he will be here next month. On Friday, April 17, we will be meeting on the USU campus in the engineering building. We will hear from Matt Roblez from McNeil Engineering. Following Mr. Roblez, we will have an Order of the Engineer ceremony. We will be sending out sign up applications shortly and we encourage you to participate in this joint event with the ASCE USU Student Chapter. Your families are invited to attend this special event with you. On Saturday, April 25, we are planning to have the closing social, at noon. We plan to have a couple of the concrete canoes from USU at Logan

River’s first dam at the mouth of Logan Canyon. We will be having a BBQ lunch and once again, you are welcome to bring your families to this event. Details for the April events will follow in next month’s newsletter. There are 3 nominees on the ballot this year for ASCE NUB president for 2016-2017; John Powell, Cameron Draney, and Derek Johnson. Please be sure to vote! We hope to see you at the Bluebird Restaurant in Logan at Noon on Thursday, March 19 to hear from Randy Julander!

We would like to thank Doug Watson for his presentation on February 17 at the Bluebird in Logan! This month we will be privileged to hear from Randy Julander, Snow Survey Supervisor at the USDA-NRCS, who will present to us on March 19 at noon at the Bluebird Restaurant in Logan. We are planning several events for April this year. On Thursday, April 9, we will hear from Peter Juszczyk, from Varicore Technologies, who will present on Multi-Flow Systems, an alternative to French drains. Mr. Juszczyk had to cancel in January on short notice, so

Utah and Salt Lake Community College. Our branch was able to donate $500 to Salt Lake Community College for an engineering scholarship. The donation was made possible by money provided from the ASCE Utah Section and funds raised from our luncheons. SLCC has matched our donation to create a $1000 scholarship available to their engineering students for the upcoming fall semester. Once again, we would like to thank our branch members for making this a reality. We are working with the U of U for a similar scholarship opportunity.

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped during E-Week at the AMES School. It is great to know that you are willing to spend your own time sharing the joys of our profession with the next generation of engineers. We had a great turnout and look forward to this event in the upcoming year. Our March luncheon will be held at WesTech on Friday, March 27th. Christina Osborn from Women for Water will be speaking to us. Look for more information on this luncheon in your email within the coming weeks. We look forward to seeing you there.

The Wasatch Front Branch would like to thank Phil Meis and Casey Brown from the ASCE National Sue Committee for their presentation on subsurface utility engineering at our February luncheon. We were able to learn about the advancements in subsurface utility exploration and its impact on engineering projects. Also, we cannot thank WesTech Engineering enough for their generosity in allowing us to use their conference facility for our luncheons. Our branch has enjoyed an ongoing relationship with our local ASCE student groups at the University of

Brad Price of RBG Engineering, Inc., received his ASCE Life Membership. We congratulate Mr. Price on his achievements as a geotechnical engineering consultant and long term membership with ASCE. This month the ASCE Central Branch will be having a round table discussion with three city engineers from local municipalities. The lunch will be held 12:00 pm, March 19, 2015 at the Spaghetti Factory in Orem at the University Mall. There was a great turn out for the luncheon at BYU in celebration of Engineers. Dr. Paul Richards provided lecture on connection of steel columns to concrete footings. His research will be complete after next year. The central branch presented 3 scholarships to BYU Civil Engineering students currently in their junior year. Each recipient received a $400.00 scholarship for the coming year. ASCE

As Mark gained professional experience, he focused his attention on water resources and especially groundwater resources and returned to the University of Utah to get a degree in Geological Engineering. Mark has provided groundwater consulting services for numerous Cities and Districts in characterizing aquifers, siting, drilling, maintaining and rehabilitating wells and establishing safe groundwater production practices. Mark enjoys being outdoors, sports and spending time with his wife and three children. Groundwater is a vital source of drinking and irrigation water throughout the State of Utah. Many cities have adopted the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” mentality when it comes to their facilities and especially water wells which can be tricky to

understand. The proper design, construction, operations, maintenance and rehabilitation of water wells. These assets provide a challenge to most cities as the unknown and unseen problems can go undetected until it is too late and a well is no longer available in the middle of peak production times. This presentation covered the aspects of wells that will help ensure that they continue to serve your system well into the future. This month we will be having our luncheon on March 19th, so watch for an upcoming email with more details. If you would like to get involved with the Southern Utah Branch of ASCE please contact us. This last month we had the opportunity to have Mark Chandler present to us on well operation and maintenance. Mark Chandler grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah. Mark’s love for understanding the way the world works led him to graduate from Utah State University in Civil Engineering.

The YMF hosts a networking social each month to meet new engineering friends outside of the traditional business atmosphere who might turn out to be your new best friend. Our March networking social will be March 26th 6pm at the Pie Pizzeria (1320 E 200 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84102) adjacent to the University of Utah Campus. Make sure to put this one on your calendar! On March 4th the YMF attended the U of U Career Fair held in the Warnock Building. Younger members were able to chat with students about resume techniques and how to prepare for the job field. A few lucky students were also able to take home some coveted ASCE memorabilia.

The YMF Spring PE Review Course begins THIS TUESDAY March 10th 6pm. There are only a couple spots left until the class is FULL. Classes are held Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6pm-8pm March 10th – April 9th held at UDOT Region 2 in the Hurley Conference room. Classes cover a

breadth and depth portion of each of the five civil engineering disciplines. Each class is taught by a licensed PE with years of professional experience. Most of our instructors have taught the course for more than five years and will prepare you to PASS the PE with confidence. While most comparable review course options will set you back upwards of $1000, the YMF Review course is reasonably priced at $250 ASCE members/$350 non ASCE members. Our upcoming service activity for March (24th – 26th) is the annual Salt Lake Valley Science and Engineering Fair (SLVSEF) held at Rice Eccles Stadium. Each year the YMF has the opportunity to judge student projects from Elementary, Junior High, and High Schools and award three prizes for each category. The judging occurs in the evenings, generally meeting around 6 pm and lasting 2 hours each night. To volunteer for an evening, please contact Imanuel Aswandi: asceutahymf@gmail.com. The YMF is full of ideas, but many times short on volunteer power. Meet your Young Member Forum Board

Imanuel Alex Tiffany Clark February was an exciting month for the Young Member Forum (YMF)! This year the Utah YMF sent six delegates to the Western Regional Younger Member Conference (WRYMC) held in Seattle, February 19th-21st. WRYMC is held each year in a rotating location to bring together younger members across the region for the purpose of networking, collaborating about younger member initiatives, and growing in technical knowledge and leadership ability. Our group was able to go on a variety of technical tours including seeing “Big Bertha”, the world’s largest tunnel boring machine (TBM), and the longest floating bridge.

Kimberly Scholes has stepped down as the Civil Source editor in anticipation of the arrival of her new little one. The ASCE Utah Section would like to sincerely thank Kimberly Scholes for her efforts in compiling and publishing the Civil Source each month for the last few years

There is still time to register for the 2015 Structures Congress in Portland, Oregon on April 23-25. This is another great opportunity to continue our education and exposure to state-of-the-practice topics. There are over 120 technical sessions offered on a variety of topics applicable to structural engineering practice. On another note, the Geo-Institute and the Structural Engineering Institute are combining resources to sponsor the 2016 Geo-SEI Congress. They are currently seeking proposals for the education sessions. The Program Committee seeks dynamic, relevant sessions and presentations addressing both geotechnical and structural engineering issues. Consider

submitting an abstract or session proposal for one of the identified topics or subtopics that will interest both professions. They encourage submissions from practitioners, educators, researchers, geo-technical engineers, geo-professionals, structural engineers, bridge and building designers, firm owners, codes and standards developers, and others. Several types of submittals are encouraged: a single abstract; a full 90-minute session proposal (traditional or panel); and a NEW interactive poster abstract. More details can be found on the conference website. Proposals are due April 7, 2015 and can be emailed to dsmith@asce.org.

I hope many of you were able to attend the SEAU Conference in Provo. There were a number of good sessions and it was well ran and well attended. SEI appreciates the good work that SEAU has done in supporting our profession. I also hope that the Short Course on Ground Motions sponsored by EERI was well attended.

ACI 318-14: Reorganized for Design Building Code Seminar A One Day Seminar – April 30, 2015 – Salt Lake City, UT Overview ACI 318-14: Reorganized for Design

The American Concrete Institute has recently published the newest edition of ACI 318, “Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete (ACI 318-14).” This edition represents the first major change in Code organization in over 40 years and has been completely reorganized from a designer’s perspective. This seminarwill help you get acquainted with the new organization and various technical changes to the code as quickly as possible and demonstrate how you can ensure that your design fully complies with the new code. A member of the ACI 318 committee and an ACI staff engineer will guide attendees through the new organization of the code, concentrating on provisions for cast-in-place, nonprestressed concrete member design. The philosophy behind the new organizational structure will be demonstrated through a thorough review of the Code’s outline and provisions in the major chapters to give attendees new insight into the background behind the new organizational structure and how the new organization makes it easier to find needed requirements. All major technical changes and new provisions will be highlighted to keep Code users up-to-date with the latest requirements. In addition, reorganization has collected all construction related requirements into a single chapter. The responsibility of the licensed design professional to include this information in contract documents, as it relates to a particular project, will be explained. Included with this seminar is a complimentary copy of ACI 318-14. A copy of the presentation for the attendeeto take notes in and refer to after the seminar will also be provided.
