A metaphor can be either direct or implied.

A direct metaphor clearly identifies what is being compared, often using “is” or “are.”

o Mark is a bulldozer.o Those players are animals.

An implied metaphor hints at what is being compared but doesn’t say it directly.

o Mark will plow right over you.o Those players will chew you up and spit you out.

A metaphor gives us a way to see something in a new way as long as the comparison is interesting and fresh.

But they aren’t only found in poems and short stories. They are often used to manipulate us into doing things, believing things, and buying things.

Look at the following ads: • What is the metaphor? • What do they want the metaphor to mean to you? • What other meanings might each metaphor have?
