Special Care Dentistry Association (SCDA) is a uniqueinternational organization of oral health professionalsand other individuals who are dedicated to promotingoral health and well being for people with special needs.

Because many of the goals and activities of these threepractice areas overlap, the component groups joinedforces and formed SCDA. By fully integrating thesegroups, SCDA benefits its members – and the patientsthey serve – by having a united leadership and a singlemission.

The SCDA Virtual Meeting brings together leading national and international dentists and hygienists toexchange cutting edge research and best practices in hospital, geriatric and persons with disabilitiesdentistry. By bringing together these dental leaders, new dentists, and students, it creates a uniqueopportunity for collaboration. Additionally, the Annual Virtual Meeting is the place to learn moreabout innovations in products and services for the special populations SCDA members serve.

While many of the attendees have private practices with a variety of patients, many also work inhospitals or educational environments teaching future practitioners. The age of meeting attendeesranges from students beginning their career to those who have reached the pinnacle of their careerand have earned Diplomate status.

Steve Beetstra, DDS, MHSA

Dr. Stephen Beetstra received his dental degree from Baylor College of Dentistry in 1990. Hethen served as a Commissioned Officer in the United States Public Health Service until 1999.While in service, he created needs based programs for pediatric, Native American, migrant,and medically complex patients in Oregon, Florida, and North Carolina. For his efforts, Dr.Beetstra received an Outstanding Service Medal, the highest award granted by the Service andwas recognized by the National Health Service Corps as a Healthcare Hero.

After service in the Public Health, he joined the faculty of the University of New Mexico, School of Medicine,Department of Surgery. As the first dentist ever hired by the medical school, he was the Chief, Division of DentalServices and soon expanded the dental footprint on the campus. During his seven years of service, he created anetwork of seven university affiliated dental clinics and recruited a faculty of eight to help address the unmet needsof rural, medically complex, and special needs patients. Practicing in an academic institution in a state without adental school or graduate dental programs, he led the creation of the first graduate dental program in the state. Hewas the principle investigator in federal and state grant funding to begin the programs and led the successfulaccreditation of the first training program.Dr. Beetstra was recruited to Arkansas Children’s Hospital due to his experience in care for patients with complexmedical and developmental disabilities in 2005. In 2011, he received a Master’s in Health Services Administrationfrom the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, School of Public Health. In 2012, he became the Chief of DentalServices and helped expand the program from eight faculty to fifteen. The program has expanded both hospital,outreach, and was instrumental in creating graduate dental training programs. In 2017, the Arkansas Children’sDental Faculty were incorporated into the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. With that transition, Dr.Beetstra assumed the Chair of the Department of Pediatric and Special Needs Dentistry. During his tenure theprogram expanded from 5000 patient visits per year to 20,000.In August 2020, Dr. Beetstra began working at the OSU Nisonger Center as its dental program director.In that role,he manages two clinics and is developing training programs to teach dental residents, students, and dental hygienestudents to care for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Stephanie Munz, DDS

Dr. Munz earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from the University of Michigan in 2011and completed the general practice residency (GPR) at the University of Michigan HealthSystem in 2012. After residency, Dr. Munz joined the University of Michigan faculty in 2012 asthe GPR Assistant Program Director and in 2014, Dr. Munz became the GPR Program Director.In 2019, she took on the role of Associate Chair of Hospital Dentistry and was appointed as theWalter H. Swartz Professor of Integrated Special Care Dentistry. She is committed todeveloping the next generation of general dentists with a special focus on patient with specialneeds.

Dr. Munz's clinical interests are in implant and prosthetic rehabilitation of patients with headand neck cancer and patients with cleft lip/palate and craniofacial anomalies, as well asgeneral dentistry for patients with medical complexity and special healthcare needs. Herresearch interests are in oral disease factors contributing to community-acquired infectiveendocarditis, oral prosthetics' effects on oral health-related quality of life, and the healthprofession's progress in interprofessional education and collaborative patient care.

Dr. Mulligan is a Diplomate of the American Board of Special Care Dentistryand past President, of the Special Care Dentistry Association, the Academy of Dentistry for Persons withDisability, the American Society for Geriatric Dentistry and the IADR Geriatric Oral Research Group. She holdsFellowships in the Gerontological Society of America and the Academy of Dentistry for Persons with Disabilities.She has received numerous awards from SCDA, ADPD, AADR, ADEA and Ostrow and has been the PrincipalInvestigator on numerous grants concerning oral health care related topics for special needs populationsamounting to nearly $70 million in funding. She has published more than 185 papers, abstracts, editorials andbook chapters on caring for medically compromised patients and older adults and the epidemiologic findings oforal health in underprivileged children.

Dr. Suarez- Durall graduated from the Universidad de Costa Rica in 1990 and served as an Assistant Professor at the Universidad Latina de Costa Rica until 2004. She received her dualspecialty certificates from the Advanced Certificate Program in Orofacial Pain and OralMedicine at USC in 2006 and her Master’s Degree in Gerontology from the USC Davis School ofGerontology in 2018. She is now an Associate Professor of Clinical Dentistry at the HermanOstrow School of Dentistry of USC where she directs the Special Patients Clinic and serves as

Dr. Mulligan received her DDS degree from the UCLA School of Dentistry, her MS degree fromthe USC Davis School of Gerontology and completed her GPR certification at Rancho LosAmigos National Rehabilitation Center. She is the Charles M. Goldstein Professor ofCommunity Oral Health and the Associate Dean for Community Health Programs and HospitalAffairs at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry and holds a joint faculty appointment at theUSC Davis School of Gerontology. She directs the hybrid online Geriatric Dentistry MS Degree

the Interim Division Chair of Dental Public Health and Pediatric Dentistry. She also holds an Adjunct facultyappointment in the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology. Dr. Susanne Krämer graduated as a dentist from the School of Dentistry, University of Chile andcompleted the Master in Special Care Dentistry at the Eastman Dental Institute, UniversityCollege London. She has also completed a Diploma in Neuroscience.

Dr. Krämer is currently Associate Professor at University of Chile, Director of the Diploma inSpecial Care Dentistry and Head of the Special Care Clinic. Her main areas of expertise includethe care of patients with Epidermolysis Bullosa, Cerebral Palsy and Autism; as well as publicpolicies to increase access to dentistry for people with disabilities.

She started an Epidermolysis Bullosa dental clinic in 2006 and has dedicated most of her careerto caring for people living with this condition. In 2012 she led the first international clinicalguideline: Oral health care for patients with epidermolysis bullosa - best clinical practiceguidelines, which was recently updated in November 2020.

Karyn Harvey, PhD

Ann Spolarich, RDH, PhD, FSCDH

Ann Eshenaur Spolarich is an internationally recognized author and speaker on pharmacologyand the care of medically complex patients. She has presented over 1,000 invited lectures andhas over 125 professional publications. She is Professor, Course Director of Clinical Medicineand Pharmacology, and Assistant Dean for Research at the Arizona School of Dentistry & OralHealth, A.T. Still University (ATSU), where she teaches part-time in the Special Care Clinic. Annis also a faculty member in the NYU Langone AEGD residency program at ATSU. Ann wasawarded fellowship status in special care dental hygiene from the Special Care DentistryAssociation in 2016.

Karyn Harvey is a psychologist who has worked in the field of Intellectual Disabilities for over30 years. She has written several books on trauma and disabilities. She currently works in aclinic conducting individual and group therapy and speaks throughout the country ontrauma-informed support for people with intellectual disabilities.

Dr. Rodriguez-Catter is a licensed psychologist at the Ohio State University Nisonger Centerand an associated Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Behavior Health at the OhioState University Medical Center. She has twenty-five years of experience in the assessmentand treatment of severe problem behaviors in the IDD population.

David Reznik is a graduate of Emory College and Emory University’s School of Dentistry and isthe Director of the Oral Health Center of Grady’s Infectious Disease Program, a clinic hefounded over 28 years ago. He also serves as Chief of the Dental Medicine Service for theGrady Health System. Dr. Reznik is president and founder of the HIV Dental Alliance(HIVdent), a not-for-profit organization of concerned healthcare providers committed toassuring access to high quality oral health care services for people with HIV disease

throughout the U.S. Dr. Reznik has lectured and published extensively on HIV and oral health, infection controlissues and more recently antibiotic stewardship. He has also provided technical assistance to oral health programsthroughout the United States for the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) HIV/AIDS Bureau (HAB)grantees and serves as a clinical site visitor for HAB grantees. He has served as an outside consultant formalpractice cases for the HRSA Bureau of Primary Care. Dr. Reznik is a cohort 1 2016-2019 Robert Wood JohnsonFoundation Clinical Scholar alumni working with a multidisciplinary team to increase access to oral health careadults and children throughout the state of Georgia.

David Reznik, DDS

Dr. Robert M. Peskin graduated from Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine in1977. He subsequently completed General Practice and Dental Anesthesiology Residencies atLong Island Jewish Medical Center. Since 1983, he has maintained a private dentalanesthesiology practice devoted primarily to the management of the anxious, apprehensiveand special needs patient in Garden City, New York. In addition, he provides in-officeanesthesia for other dentists throughout the Greater New York metropolitan area.

Dr. Peskin is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery’s Division ofHospital Dentistry at Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine. He is also a Diplomate of both theAmerican and National Dental Boards of Anesthesiology and a Fellow of the American and International Collegesof Dentists, and the Academy of General Dentistry.Dr. Peskin has published many original manuscripts and book chapters in the scientific literature. In addition, helectures to undergraduate dental students at the School of Dental Medicine at Stony Brook on a variety ofanesthesia-related subjects, provides the majority of didactic material to graduate dental hygienists atFarmingdale State University seeking certification in the use infiltration local anesthesia and nitrous oxideadministration, and lectures locally and nationally on a broad variety of continuing education topics of interest topracticing dentists.

Dr. Patton is Director of the General Practice Residency program and Professor in the Divisionof Craniofacial and Surgical Care at the University of North Carolina Adams School ofDentistry. She is the Immediate Past President of the American Academy of Oral Medicine andis a Diplomate and past President of the American Board of Oral Medicine. She is also aDiplomate of the American Board of Special Care Dentistry. She earned her DDS at theUniversity of North Carolina, attended the 2-year GPR at UNC followed by a 2-year ClinicalDental Staff Fellowship with Oral Medicine/Research training at the NIDCR.

Lauren L. Patton, DDS

Dr. Hatfield earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from the University of Michigan in2017 and completed the general practice residency (GPR) at Michigan Medicine in 2018.Following this, she was the first person to complete the TMD & Orofacial Pain Residency atMichigan Medicine in 2020. After residency, Dr. Hatfield joined the University of Michiganfaculty as a clinical lecturer in Hospital Dentistry and TMD & Orofacial Pain. Her clinicalinterests are in TMD & Orofacial Pain diagnosis and management, includingtemporomandibular joint disorders, headaches, and neuropathic pain disorders. She is

expressly interested in furthering undergraduate and graduate education in this clinical area. Dr. Hatfield’sresearch interests are in innovative management strategies for orofacial pain disorders and inter-professionaleducation and collaboration. She is an active member of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain (AAOP) and acommittee on both the new member section of Washtenaw District Dental Society and the American DentalAssociation (ADA).

Edward L. Perlow DDS FAGD, in 1977, was accepted to the 6-year pre-professional scholarsprogram at Case Western Reserve University. After completing all requirements forprofessional school the first two years, he entered dental school receiving a B.S. in Dentistryin 1981. In 1982 Dr. Perlow was elected International Dental Student Representative for AlphaOmega Dental Fraternity. He also received a grant to study various carbohydrates and theirquantitative and dynamic acidogenicity in human saliva relating to their cariogenic potentials.This was presented in a competitive forum. He received his D.D.S. in 1983 and was awardedhonors in Oral Diagnosis and Radiology and was elected to the Omicron Kappa Upsilon dentalhonor society. He completed a general practice residency at Long Island Jewish Hospital from1983-1984 and immediately acquired a private practice at 2 Kent Rd New Hyde Park, NYwhere he has continually practiced comprehensive general dentistry with an emphasis onproviding advanced restorative dental care for both typical and special needs patients. Heroutinely utilizes sedation and general anesthesia services with an attending anesthesiologistin the private practice setting. In 1985 Dr. Perlow returned to Long Island Jewish Hospital as acommunity based voluntary attending supervising general practice residents with care andtreatment of special needs patients. For many years he has functioned as section chief andlectured in reference to Special Needs patients, private practice organization, prosthodontics,restorative dentistry, dental Issues in the Fragile X population, Sleep apnea therapy and theuse of dentally supported appliances, and ethical issues in dentistry. Dr. Perlow has hadmemberships in Alpha Omega, the ADA, along with NYSDA and the Nassau County DentalSociety, AGD,Academy of Osseointegration, Special Care Dentistry Association, AmericanAcademy of Dental Sleep Medicine, New York Dental Forum, Suffolk Society of DentalForensics and various local study groups. Dr. Perlow takes great pride in receiving fellowshipin the Academy of General Dentistry and having served on both the executive and board ofdirectors of Nassau County Dental Society as well as holding the position of chairman of itscouncil on Ethics in Dental Practice. He has notablyparticipated in examining and identifyingvictims of the TWA 800 disaster as well as attending Hofstra University School of Law for itscertification study in Clinical Medical Bioethics. Presently he maintains attendance in theMedical Ethics journal club in Northwell Health System’s Feinstein Institute. Dr. Perlow alsoserves on the Citizens Board and guardianship council for AHRC Nassau, which is the largestagency serving the developmentally disabled population in New York State.
