• Product Documentation…

• engineering documentation

• service documentation

• … based on a 3D model…

• A solid model built using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software

• … containing embedded Product and Manufacturing Information (PMI)

• including notes, dimensions, GD&T, surface finish and material specifications

• … used throughout the enterprise.

• to manufacture products

• to check products for quality

• to service products

What is MBE?

3

• MBE is NOT drawingless

• Drawingless is the elimination of 2D-based product documentation.

• MBE is often used in conjunction with 2D-based documentation.

• MBE is NOT paperless

• Paperless is the consumption of documents in digital formats instead of physical

ones.

• MBE documentation can be consumed in this manner, but it is not required.

What is NOT MBE?

4

• Authoring product documentation

• Creating MBE documentation requires embedding PMI in the 3D model instead of a

2D drawing.

• The activities are very similar. PMI creation tools have been improved and

streamlined.

• 3D MBE can be used to generate 2D Drawings (both paper and paperless) which helps

in the transition.

• Consuming product documentation

• MBE documentation can be interrogated by the consumer, allowing them to check it.

MBE documentation can be interactive, allowing the consumer to see and understand

the documentation more clearly.

• 3D MBE can capture engineering design intent reducing poor interpretation down

stream (by non-engineers) which leads to scrap and rework.

What is the Value of MBE?

5

• The 2013 3D Collaboration and Interoperability Study

• Researched three main issues

• Interoperability in the design chain

• Adoption of MBE

• Use of 3D in the enterprise

• Collected responses from 844 participants

• Five research partners, five software partners

13

On the Critical Path

14

• Many companies are exploring MBE initiatives, especially in A&D, in a wide variety of applications

• ASME Y14.41 is used widely in these efforts

• There is still a strong overlap between 3D-based and 2D-based documentation

• There is little doubt that 3D MBE will become the preferred from of documentation …the only question is when.

26

Tactical Objective

• Transition to a 3D Model Based Definition (MBD) methodology by eliminating the creation and the use of 2D drawings in the manufacturing process throughout the supply chain

Strategic Objectives

• Provide a streamlined approach to sharing product design and engineering data with their suppliers to accelerate the product realization and the speed to market

Success Story : Leading Truck Mfg. Co. gained significant benefits by adopting 3D-based model definition

Benefits to adopting MBE methodology:

1. Reduced engg & procurement costs

2. Reduced supplier costs

3. Reduced scrap and rework costs

4. Increased supplier response
