InthemorningwewillvisitHeverCastle,famousforitsassociationswithHenryVIIIandAnneBoleyn.Spanningmorethan700years,thehistoryofHeverCastlebeginswiththeoriginalmedievaldefensivecastle,withitsgatehouseandwalledbailey,builtin1270.Inthe15thand16thcenturiesitwasthehomeofoneofthemostpowerfulfamiliesinthecountry,theBoleyns,whoaddedtheTudordwellingwithinthewalls.HeverwasthechildhoodhomeofAnneBoleyn,HenryVIII’ssecondwife.ThecastlelaterpassedintotheownershipofanotherofHenryVIII’swives,AnneofCleves,andfrom1557onwardsitwasownedbyanumberoffamilies.

GraduallyHeverfellintodecline,butthenWilliamWaldorfAstorinvestedtime,moneyandimaginationinrestoringtheCastle.Hecommissionedthe“TudorVillage,”nowcalledthe“AstorWing”andalsothemagnificentgardensandlake.AtHever,Astor’swealthandvisionenabledhimtocreatealavishfamilyhomethatalsoindulgedhispassionforhistory.
