Designed in 1938 by Burnet, Tait & Lorne – an architectural firm that would
become an influential force in 20th century British Modern architecture –
this stylish brick edifice was originally a home for nurses working at the
adjacent Royal Masonic Hospital.

the Freemasons’ Order, it was opened in 1933 by King George V, and for a while
was the largest independent acute hospital in Europe. Winning the RIBA Gold
Medal for the best building of the year in 1933, it featured nautical-style curved

and a magnificent entrance hall.
