TRANSCRIPT
The readings this week fit together like a per-
fect puzzle. Jesus is telling us that He is the
bread of life and if we believe in Him, we will
experience life beyond life. Paul, in his letter to
the church at Ephesus, is giving us instructions
on how to apply the gift of life Jesus has sup-
plied to those who believe in Him. Then we
read that very informative and tough
29th verse in Ephesians 4! “Let no evil talk
come out of your mouths, but only what is use-
ful for building up, so that your words may
give grace to those who hear.”
Wow – that is our assignment this week. To
speak words that only build others up and
show God’s grace to those who hear. We are
given “bread beyond bread, life beyond life”
and St. Paul tells us to use that gift to build up
others! Let’s practice this together this week
and see how we do.
Sharing With Students
We have kicked off our first “Sharing With Students” project,
which will be a huge blessing to many Rowan students. You
will find a box in the back of the church where we are collect-
ing needed toiletries for those students who could use
them. After paying for classes and other expenses, these
students have nothing left for a basic food plan or products
we take for granted. THE SHOP at Rowan was created to
help with food and other supplies. Good Shepherd will be
helping with the toiletries! The basics of toilet paper, tissues,
deodorant, chap stick, dental floss, bars of soap, hand
cream, tweezers. nail files, feminine hygiene products, paper
towels, and anything else you might think of, would be per-
fect. This will be an ongoing project! Barbara Elliott will take
the supplies to THE SHOP at Rowan where all donations will
be made available to the students needing our help.
Questions? Speak to Barbara Elliott, Ellie Dunn or Deacon
Carl. Thank YOU!!
Worshipping With Us
Episcopal worship is participatory. We stand, we kneel, we respond vocally during parts of the ser-vice, sometimes with singing! Please join in at your level of comfort. If you’d like to learn more about what we as Episcopalians believe and do, or if you have any questions, please fill out one of the yellow cards in the pew and give it to Mother Susan or one of our ushers. We hope you feel welcome here and that you will come back often to feed your faith.
A Word About Receiving Communion in the Episcopal Church
All are invited to the Altar to receive. If you would like a blessing, just cross your arms over your chest. If you decide to receive only the bread, ex-tend your hand for the wafer and cross your arms over your chest to decline the wine. For the wine or grape juice you may guide the chalice to your lips by placing your hand gently on the chalice’s base and guiding it. Or you can dip your host (wafer) into the wine. Or you can give the host to the Lay Eucharistic Minister, who will dip the host into the wine and place it in your mouth.
MOWING SCHEDULE We need to get our Lawn-mowing Schedule in place. If you are interested and available to help out with mowing the Church grounds please add your name to the Mowing List in the Parish Hall. Thanks in advance!
THE SUNDAY PAPER
During the summer months The Sunday Paper and The Sunday Paper Junior will be available for our children in the back of the Church. Let the coloring begin!
CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER GROUP will meet on Wednesday, August 15th at 10 a.m. in the Conference Room. Step away from the chaos and sit in meditative quiet for 20 minutes.
CLASS will meet on Sunday, June 5, follow-ing the morning service in the Conference Room. Our topic this month will be "Evil, Suf-fering & A Loving God." Mark your calendar for the next study of Up-pity Women of the Bible! We'll begin on Thursday, September 8 at 9:30 a.m. (following Morning Prayer). Our focus for this study will be the book of Judith. Watch for more details toward the end of summer.
Our Church is Going Green!
The Church of the Good Shepherd is making progress with our “Green Initiative”. We have another success story from our Coffee Hour hosts! Many thanks to hosts Maria Szalma and Gen Por-tocalis and assistant Karen Dunn for continuing our efforts of minimizing the use of paper goods dur-ing Coffee Hour last week. Let’s keep this eco-ball rolling! Please look for the recycling bins in the Parish Hall and kitchen and other areas of the Church when discarding your recyclables. Only plas-tics marked with a 1, 2, 4, 5 & 7 are recyclable in Pitman. Styrofoam is not recyclable at all.
We continue to find ways we can significantly
reduce our energy use, lessen our impact on our
planet and save money. Please contact Diane
Wall or Lauren Kaltwasser or any Vestry member
with your ideas and suggestions.
BIBLE STUDY
NEW THURSDAY BIBLE STUDY! Parables! Parables! Beginning, Thursday, September 6, we will be studying a new series titled Short Stories by Jesus: The Enigmatic Parables of a Controversial Rabbi. Amy-Jill Levine, a Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies at Van-derbilt University will take us back in time and explain how original audiences understood Jesus' parables. Amy-Jill Levine's interpretations show how the parables still challenge and provoke contemporary readers two thou-sand years later. This will be a six-week study and will take place at 9:30-10:30 a.m. in the Conference Room. Never participated in a bible study? This might be a good one to step into - all are welcome!
