Small group is effective in sharing and learning together the Bible.

In a small group (5-10 people), each person has the opportunity to speak, to share one‟s opinion, and to interact with one another.

ในกลมยอย (5-10 คน) แตละคนจะมโอกาสพด แบงปน

ความคดเหน และ สอสารระหวางกน

In a small group not only each person can learn the Bible in a rich and meaningful way, but also can encourage each other to obey God‟s Word that they learn to day.

อยางอดมสมบรณและมความหมาย ยงสามารถหนนใจซง

Our experiences in Indonesia, after so many years concentrating in teaching BRM to individuals in the churches: not many Christians are using the BRM faithfully in their quiet time.

At first, when they were taught BRM, they received this method gladly, and committed themselves to use it in their quiet time.

But, BRM needs to be practiced to become a habit and a skill. Some of them got stuck on their way, and no one to help them.

So, since 1999 we developed a program to teach pastors and elders BRM, in order to help and teach their congregations to use BRM in their quiet time. We encouraged pastors to form small groups in their churches in order to help the congregations know and get used of BRM.

It worked and some pastors could actually help their congregations to grow in spirituality.

วธน ไดผล และศษยาภบาลบางทานกสามารถชวยให

สมาชกเตบโตดานจตวญญาณไดจรงๆ

However, most pastors because of their heavy duty in pastoring their churches and doing also administration works, doing evangelism, and many other things as his assignment from the synod, neglected the teaching of the Bible (using BRM) duty.

In 2011 we began a new approach. We focused at the churches who have small groups in their structure. We believe that if BRM was taught in the context of small groups, the congregations will benefit it fully.

We did this with 3 different denominations from the eastern and central part of Indonesia. The result is yet to be seen.

But, we can see the progress.

This July, we visited Ambon, in Mollucas Province, East of Indonesia. We have trained several pastors there for several years. They have taught their elders and deacons, and all the Sunday school teachers the BRM. In their church‟s structure there are GATRIS (small groups, each consists of 4-5 families from a very close neighborhood).

The one church we visited, they have 105 GATRIS, means around 450-500 families. Each of the GATRIS has each own leader. And the leaders were taught by the pastor how to do quiet time and bible study using BRM. Now, all the families in the GATRIS have learnt and used BRM in their weekly fellowships.

We will still have to wait for the real spiritual result, that really changed the congregations because of their engagement with the Bible. But we believe it will happen, sooner or later.

This story really encourage us to pursue the other two denominations, one is in Papua and the other is in Bali. The success story of the Protestant Church of Mollucas GATRIS will surely influence other churches who have similar structure.

First, we must be really sure that this strategy is biblically based.

Jesus chose 12 disciples; He trained and equipped them. พระเยซไดเลอกสาวก 12 คน พระองคทรงอบรมสงสอน

Paul trained Timothy, and prepared him to train others, who would in turn train others.

The structure of discipleship is within small group and within one on one personal relationship.

โครงสรางของการสรางสาวกจะอยภายในกลมยอย และอย

Second, prepare leaders for leading small groups. Requirements:Born again Christians.Meet God daily through the Bible and pray.Have been trained BRM and are using it regularly.Have passion to help his/her group grow.

Third, form small groups contextually.

ขนท 3: จดรปแบบและรวบรวมกลมยอยตางๆตามบรบททเหมาะสม

Take into consideration the social, culture and custom of the church and the society.

ใหค านงถงเรองสงคม วฒนธรรม และขนบธรรมเนยม

Maybe one church wants to develop small groups under man/woman category. Or under age category. Or under any category that suit the church

In a small group, any person actually can lead the Bible study using BRM.

BRM ได

First, of course the leader must give sufficient examples for the other members to follow.

สงแรก แนทเดยวทผน าจะตองใหแบบอยางทเพยงพอ

ส าหรบสมาชกคนอนๆ ทจะท าตาม

To lead does not mean to do all the talk or to answer all questions. To lead means to guide and to facilitate the discussions.

There are two ways to lead BRM in small groups.

มสองแบบในการใช BRM น ากลมยอย

First, use the horizontal whiteboard and divide it into three columns.

แบบแรกใชกระดานไวทบอรดแนวขวาง และแบงออกเปน 3ชอง (คอลมน)

On the first column, write at the top “What do I read”. On the second column, write “What are God‟s Messages for me”. On the third, “How do I respond.”

ในคอลมนแรก เขยนหวขอวา “ฉนอานอะไร”

ในคอลมนทสอง เขยนวา “มขาวสารอะไรจากพระเจา

ส าหรบฉน”

ในคอลมนทสาม “ฉนตอบสนองอยางไร”

The leader then ask the questions and the members takes turn to answer from the first column to the next.

The idea of doing this is to enable the group to check whether the answers are according to the text read and studied.

Second, using flipcharts. We will need three sheets of paper to answer each of the three questions.

For the question no. 1, the members can give answer randomly.

But question no. 2, each must give each own personal answer. Usually the question focus only on what lesson do I learn today!

Question no. 3 will then be answered by each of the member according to answer no. 2. The 3rd question focus on what should I do in a concrete way.

The idea of using three different sheets is so that the third sheet that consist of „list to do‟ from each member can be kept and recorded to be used as a reminder and an evaluation for each member.

Prepare yourselves! Do your BRM in your own time the text you are going to use in your small group.

Pray that the Holy Spirit will help each member of your small group to understand and to obey God’s Word.

อธษฐานเพอวาพระวญญาณบรสทธจะชวยสมาชกแตละคนใน

กลมยอยทจะเขาใจและเชอฟงพระวจนะของพระเจา

Remind all the members of the schedule of the meeting. Be there before time, to welcome them.

เตอนสมาชกทกคนเรองวนเวลาประชม

Do not tell the member that his or her answer is incorrect. Point him/her to the text. Ask him/her from which verse did the answer come from. Let him/her correct or adjust his/her own answer.

Give enough time for each member to answer or say his/her opinion. If one is not yet ready, move to the next person, but return to him/her later. Do not try to answer for them.

Do not preach. Always let the member answer the questions, and discuss in the group other possible answers.

อยาเทศนา ตองปลอยใหสมาชกตอบค าถามตางๆ และ

อภปรายเพอใหไดค าตอบทเปนไปไดอนๆดวย

Be creative. Especially if you lead young people group. It is a good idea for the question What do I read, the conclusion is by paraphrasing or dramatizing the text (if it is a story); poetic reading (if it is a psalm);

If you lead young people, it will be helpful to use pictures and word pictures or even some things to represent the lessons and the responds.

If you lead young people, be sure to let them explore the questions no 2 and 3 within their own context, not your context (as an adult).
