10% of the world’s population have a disability There are 400 million disabled people in developing

countries 20% of population are effected when families are

taken into account Only 1-2% of persons with disabilities in developing

countries receive an education Only 1-2% of people with a disability in low income

communities receive the rehabilitative services they need

What causes disability?

• Malnutrition• Poor maternal health• Child birth• Intermarriages• Vehicular crashes• Work injuries• Conflict• Illness – e.g., TB, polio, measles, HIV/AIDS,

diabetes, etc.

services and rehabilitation to the disabled individuals and their

1- Academic and Training Program

1- Speech & Language Pathology Centre (SLP):Rehabilitation services for a wide variety of communication

disorders. 8000 cases were treated

2-Audiology Centre:850 cases are served on annual bases Hearing screening Identify type, location and

degree of hearing loss

The Deaf Support Programme is the newly established

program in AAMAL that focuses on research on deaf culture

provisions and bilingual learning of deaf children.

It pledges to uphold the right of the deaf people everywhere

to have equal access to information and knowledge.

3- Deaf Support Program

AAMAL’s various programs and activities aim to promote social inclusion of people with disabilities into communities. This is an on going process, which includes:

Organizing awareness campaigns

Celebrating special events related to disability

Establishing family forum

Bridging people, organizations, countries with the same experience to mutually teach and learn

4- Social Awareness & KnowledgeCrosscutting activities

AAMAL has contributed in governmental advocacy through:

• The promulgation of laws (34) and (36) in 2004. which are the first laws in Syria dedicated to disability

• The development of internal procedures for social day care centers

• Presenting the National Plan for the Rehabilitation of Disabled People which was endorsed in Syria by 2008

5- Governmental Advocacy

The National Plan for Rehabilitation People with Disability

Main Activities:1- Developing legislations and issuing a report on the state of

disability.2- Studying the current state of disability and creating the national

disability registrar.3- Building capacities in disability media, early intervention,

treatment, rehabilitation.4- Prevention and early detection.5- Community accessibility and Inclusion in society.6- Social awareness campaigns.7- Establishing and operating rehabilitation and vocational training

institutions for disability and prostheses production centres.

1- Establishing NGO forum for disability 2- Initiating Disability Trust Fund3- Starting new academic programs4- Starting new services (i.e. Occupational Therapy, IQ tests, Learning Disorder).
