About the AcademyTulsa Engineering Academy @ Memorial(T.E.A.M.) is a college-preparatoryprogram for students interested inpursuing STEM careers. (STEM =Science, Technology, Engineering,Mathematics) The program meets allgraduation requirements while offeringexciting electives to prepare you to enterthe university program of your choice.

Magnet ProgramsT.E.A.M. is part of Tulsa Public Schools’Magnet Program. Students interested in aparticular Magnet Program must apply tothat program for admission.

AdmissionRequirements Complete and submit the T.E.A.M.

application.

Have at least a 3.0 GPA for math,science, and technology courses and a2.5 GPA overall.

If you live outside of the Memorialdistrict, you must also complete theTPS transfer form.

ScholarshipsGraduates of T.E.A.M. are eligible forunique scholarships, including the TulsaEngineering Academy Scholarshipcoordinated through the TulsaCommunity Foundation.

About the Director:

Lane Cardwell Matheson graduated cum laudewith a Bachelor of Science degree in MechanicalEngineering from Rice University in 1984. Sheworked for McDonnell Douglas AerospaceCompany for 10 years as a subcontractor toNASA for the International Space Stationprogram. In 1991 she was awarded the GeneralManager’s Award as the team leader fordeveloping the Early Capability AssemblySequence. Mrs. Matheson has designedstructural parts which are currently flying aboardthe International Space Station.

In 1996, Mrs. Matheson received a Master ofArts degree in Secondary Education from theUniversity of Tulsa. She currently teaches Pre-AP Physics, AP Physics B, and AP Calculus BCin addition to Introduction to EngineeringDesign and Engineering Robotics.

In 2008, Mrs. Matheson was honored with theWoodie Flowers Award at the FIRST St. LouisRegional, for outstanding robotics mentor. In2002-2003, she was honored as one of nineTeacher-of-the-Year District Finalists for TulsaPublic Schools.

Robotics Co-Sponsor:

Mr. Joe Matheson co-sponsors the roboticsteam. He is Memorial’s Science DepartmentChairperson and teaches Pre-AP Biology,Anatomy & Physiology, and EngineeringRobotics. He earned a Bachelor of Sciencedegree in Zoology from Oklahoma StateUniversity in 1990.

In 2009, Mr. Matheson was honored with theWoodie Flowers Award at the FIRST OklahomaCity Regional, for outstanding robotics mentor.Mr. Matheson was the TCTA MemorialTeacher of the Year for 2003-2004.

The CoursesAll courses for the Tulsa EngineeringAcademy @ Memorial are offered oncampus at Memorial High School withhighly qualified instructors.

T.E.A.M. students take Introduction toEngineering Design and Principles ofEngineering. Electives within Engineeringinclude Robotics, Digital Electronics, CivilEngineering & Architecture, AerospaceEngineering, Biotechnical Engineering,and Computer-Integrated Manufacturing.

T.E.A.M. students commit to taking aminimum of 1 science and 1 math classeach year for four years. These classesmust be weighted (AP or pre-AP) ordesignated advanced courses in scienceand math. The AP courses in math andscience are: Calculus AB & BC, Statistics,Computer Science A, Physics B & C,Chemistry, Environmental Science andBiology. The Pre-AP courses are:Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus,Physics, Biology, and Chemistry. Otherdesignated courses include Anatomy &Physiology and Zoology/Botany.

Memorial also offers a full spectrum of APand Pre-AP courses in English, SocialStudies, and electives.

Academy students will take a minimum oftwo years of a foreign language and willhave one elective each year to pursueadditional interests such as JROTC, band,or athletics.

Q: How many years are students in theAcademy?

A: Students can enter from 9th through11th grade, and then continue throughgraduation.

Q: Is this part of the Advanced Placementprogram?

A: Yes and No. This program is not partof the College Board which sponsorsthe Advanced Placement program.However, students take manyAdvanced Placement courses as part ofthe Academy curriculum.

Q: How does this program compare toother pre-engineering programsoffered in the Tulsa area?

A: All classes are offered on the Memorialcampus. We believe we offer moreflexibility for students and that we havethe best program for competing in avariety of local and nationalengineering competitions.

Q: I don’t know for sure that I want to bean engineer. Should I take part in thisprogram?

A: Yes! Because of the rigorous classesyou take, including additional years ofmath and science, you will be wellprepared for college, regardless of themajor you choose. Many differentfields require the knowledge you willobtain through the program. But the

best part is that these classes are fun,interesting, and interactive.

Q: I’m interested. Now what do I do?A: Complete an Engineering Academy

Application. They are available onlineat memorial.tulsaschools.org,Engineering Academy, or e-mailmathela@tulsaschools.org to requestone. If you live outside the Memorialdistrict, you must also complete a TPStransfer request, indicating theEngineering Academy as the reasonfor the transfer. Transfer requestforms are available at most schools andthe Education Service Center.

Q: What are the prerequisites foradmission?

A: Students must have at least a 3.0 GPAfor their math, science, and technologyclasses and a 2.5 GPA overall.Students who have not completedAlgebra 1 will be required to take theclass with a special emphasis onengineering and take 2 math classestheir sophomore or junior year.
