Links4Soils Summer school Pokljuka 2019 Forest production workshop, 11 June 2019 Dr. Andreja Nève Repe Forests of Pokljuka The forests cover 91 % (4.674 ha) of the Pokljuka plateau. Ecological factors, that are climate, relief, parent material and soil, which include additional two important components - time and humans, resulted diverse forest associations.
Table 1: Forest types on Pokljuka plateau, surface and its share
Forest types Area (ha) % Mountainous, altimountainous beech forest on carbonate and mix parent material 1,902 40.7 Altimountainous, subalpine beech forest on carbonate and mix parent material 1,601 34.3 Submountainous - mountainous forest on silicate parent material 40 0.8 Mountainous, altimountainous forests on silicate parent material 1,120 24.0 Altimountainous, subalpine beech forest on silicate parent material 11 0.2 Total: 4,674 100.0
Site conditions: - soil productivity: depth, texture, structure; - slope, aspect, and elevation; - precipitation, temperature and length of growing season; - forest management measures. In the past, main human activity was grazing and woodcutting; many beech and fir trees were chopped down in the 18th century for the iron foundries situated in Bohinj valley. Beech and fir have been naturally replaced mostly by spruce, which was later maintained as monoculture spruce stands. Traditionally as well as nowadays, forest represents the most important natural resource of Pokljuka. Objective: To understand the importance of forests in the area, to identify key tree species, to learn about the forest site, characteristics of tree growth and forest development. PRACTICAL PART: Methodology:
Finding a pre-defined sample plot with the help of GPS. Determination of the species composition of the trees and shrubs. Identification of stands and trees characteristics. Measurements of tree height with Haglof vertex. Measurements of tree diameter with calliper. Taking tree samples to determine age by counting the tree rings. Determining increment with Pressler's drill.
On the typical forest habitats on the Pokljuka plateau, 3 sample plots will be studied. Sample plot 1

Ljubljana, 18.7.2019 Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Viale delle Terme di Caracalla 00153 Rome, Italy Dear Sirs, In the framework of the Links4Soils project (Interreg Alpine Space), we organized a Summer School for the European high school students with the aim to present soils, one of the world's most important natural resources. The event took place in Slovenia, at the Pokljuka plateau, from 10th - 14th of June 2019. 28 children from three different countries: Italy, Lichtenstein and Slovenia, participated in the Summer School. One of the products of the Links4Soils Summer School participants was a poster in which they expressed their opinion on soil topic. Opinions were addressed to ESP, GSP, MA and you - the FAO of the UN. Students had a very positive opinion about the entire Summer School. They thanked for the opportunity, new knowledge and, above all, for reminding them of the importance of protecting the soil. Since the Summer School was so successful, we would like to present some of their opinions. "Summer Schools like this are good because they raise awareness about things that are very important and we do not even realize that nobody talks about them." "I would do this again because it was very helpful to understand the characteristics, importance, and variety of the soil." "I think it's very important to organize this kind of event because we do not talk much about the soil, which is an amazing resource and it's very interesting!" "It was nice to hear different opinions from professionals. We've learned a lot and had fun. " "This summer school is useful because young people can learn a lot of things about a new subject (the soil)." "Summer School raised my awareness of soil and climate change." "Thank you for giving us the opportunity to learn something really important about our planet in a beautiful landscape with amazing people from different countries." "I am glad I was part of this program because I learned that there is more to the problems of global warming than it seems at first. I had no idea it has to do so much with the soil. I'm also glad I've learned other things. So thank you. "
Links4Soils Summer School Pokljuka, June 2019 Caring for Soils – Where Our Roots Grow
These are some of the most inspiring quotes. Because of them, we see that our effort was not in vain and that we changed many minds. Other students also thanked for everything they learned. They liked the cooperation with other young people from foreign countries and were overwhelmed by the nature of the Pokljuka plateau. They praised the organizers of the Summer School and suggested that such an event should happen more often. One of the main goals of the Links4Soils Summer School was to raise awareness of the importance of preserving the soil for future generations, what we think was done successfully. Because of all the positive impressions, we wanted to share their opinion with you. We cordially invite you to respond to the letter. We believe that the answer will inspire students to take action on preserving the soil and let them know that their opinion means something. Thank you for your time and effort! Sincerely,
