Erin Brockovich

Erin Brockovich (2000) will be screened on April 2 at 6 pm at the American Centre, No 44, Galle Road, Colombo 3. (Running Time: 132 minutes)

She brought a small town to its feet and a huge company to its knees Broke and des-perate, the twice-divorced single mom Erin bosses her way into a clerical job with attor-ney Ed Masry (Albert Finney). Erin is soon focused on suspicious connec-tions between a mighty power com-pany, its abuse of toxic chromium, and the poisoned water supply of Hinkley, California, where locals have suffered a legacy of death and disease. Match-ing the dramatic potency of Norma Rae and Silkwood, Erin Brockovich filters cold facts through warm humanity, especially in Erin's rapport with dying victims and her relationship with George, a Harley-riding neighbor who offers more devotion than Erin's ever known. The factual basis of Erin Brockovich adds a boost of satisfaction, proving that greed, neglect, and corporate arrogance are no match against a passionate crusader.

Photographer Ange-lo de Mel’s sixth solo exhibition ‘Commen-taries on Living IV’ is presented by the Indian Cultural Centre (ICC)

Colombo in association with the Tagore Society of Sri Lanka at the ICC from April 4 to 7. The inaugu-ration will be held on April 4 at 6 pm at the Centre located at 16/2, Gregory’s Road, Colombo 7. The exhibition will remain open from April 5 to 7 from 10 am to 6 pm.

Photographer de Mel has a knack for giving a meaning to his photo-graphs that lifts it soemtimes to the realm of philosophy. This he does by giving a title taken from a work of literature or from a religious text. A case in point is the picture enti-

tled “The vanishing footsteps of life upon the shifting sands of time” which is a graphically stunning depiction of the ephemeralness of life itself.

The present exhibition contains 80 colour and black and white pho-tographs which he has taken since his last exhibition at the Art Gallery in 2010 under the same title.

Angelo de Mel hails from Mor-atuwa, and had his education at St.Sebastian’s College, in his home town, where he picked up his pho-tography. In 1955, he teamed up with soem of his classmates who were movie mad as himself at that time and produced the first ever children’s film made entirely by children in Sri Lanka which was Ceylon at that time. He still travels

widely around the country off the beaten track in search of pictures of people as they are straight from the flow of life. The exhibition promis-es to be treat for the eye as well the mind. For further details please contact the Indian Cultural Centre on telephone no: 2684698 or Email: iccrcolombo @gmail.com.

Theatre is no fresh concept to the Sri Lankans, a country that had housed many ancient drama forms such as ‘nadagam.’

Even evolving into more advanced forms, teledrama and cinema, Sri Lan-kans still seem fond of theatre.

The theatre is slowly outsmarting its contemporaries.

Theatre stands alone, since it is the most alive medium – that is the opin-ion of the seasoned artistes.

Sri Lanka’s only international thea-tre festival, Colombo International Theatre Festival (CITF), aims at going beyond language barriers in its second year. The festival will carry on till April 4, to coincide with World Theatre Day.

The festival’s objective is to enhance the centralised knowledge of the Sri Lankan youth to a more open status thereby transforming the Sri Lankan theatre for betterment.

Q: Why didn’t you screen Dawala Doowili in Sri Lanka?

A: I am a disciple of Dr Tissa Abeysekara. Therefore I like to make art movies but I have seen the local audience turning their back on art productions simply because they do not see beautiful images on the trailers.

Only an academic level audience will come to watch such productions.

Sometimes that particular audience will come for the premier and media show.

The rest of the days only a few passerbys will enter the hall to watch the film.

The publicity campaigns and post produc-tion work which is involved while screening the movie is costly. We have to fund all this by ourselves.

Any field will survive if it has a good interaction with the citizens in its country. We can go beyond these boundaries and reach international standards if we are given economic support.

Some countries have film funds. They select upcoming directors from film schools and fund their projects. They make Art House films in this manner.

Sri Lanka does not possess such a system. Therefore we have to depend on producers in making movies.

We cannot target film festivals or awards when we take up this chore because the main focus needs to be on earning the money that the producer has put into the film.

This has become our foundation today.
