DPAIN 1800s

• DAVEY – discovers Nitrous oxide dulls pain when witnessing its use at a theatre for entertainment

• Writes about its properties as a pain killer• 1830s used in Dentistry for pulling teeth

SPAIN 1800s

• SIMPSON – inhales chemicals with other medical friends after dinner looking for useful ones

• Discovers chloroform in 1847 Queen Victoria gave it the seal of approval when she used it for the birth of her child in early 1850s

• Hannah Greener aged 15 died in dentist’s chair after using it so ether remained more popular

L1800s

INFECTION

• LISTER– inspired by Pasteur’s germ theory [1860s]he began using Carbollic Acid spray in a machine of his own design to kill the germs in the operating theatre [1870s]

• He got the idea because in Carlisle it was used in the sewers to get rid of germs and the smell [‘miasma’] and he knew the inside of bodies smelled similar

• This cut the death rate of his operations from 45% to 15%

L1900s

BLEEDING

• LANDSTEINER discovered Blood Groups in 1900• This meant transfusions could always be succesful• Later the discovery that Sodium Citrate stopped blood clotting meant that blood could

now also be stored and transported to where it was needed• During WW1 [1914-18] this lead to the set up of the National Transfusion Service for giving

blood
