RadioNet achievements
Transnational access to the RadioNet facilities integrated professional user support NorthStar
Innovative R&D SIS and HEB mixers, cryogenic HEMT MMIC amplifier, miniaturized
receiver modules (IRAM, APEX and ALMA), UniBoard/UniBoard2 (FPGA-based computing platform), Wide-band receiver (1.5-5GHz), DDBC3 Backend, Calibration software (ParselTongue), fast transient imager
(CASACore), software reducing the amount of re-computations
Comprehensive and sustainable networking training (ERIS, YERAC), engineering (TOG, GTG), policy (white
paper, ERTRC report, CRAF), ALMA user support, scientific events (IAU Symposia, EVN Symposium)

Pilot under H2020
I. Rottmann OPTICON Board Meeting – Heraklion, 5.11.2018 www.radionet-org.eu Contract No: 730562
To develop new ways for opening RIs of European interest and to support the integrating provision of their services at EU level: to harmonise national & EU
To prepare the ground for supporting networks that bring together national, regional and European funders of research infrastructures, for co-funding trans-national access of researchers
Targeting larger sets of RIs, gathering close advanced communities to develop and implement a programme focussing on access provision, harmonisation of access procedures in the EU & integration
Pilot - Objectives & Target
I. Rottmann OPTICON Board Meeting – Heraklion, 5.11.2018 www.radionet-org.eu Contract No: 730562
1. To prepare the ground for supporting networks that bring together national, regional and European funders of research infrastructures, for co-funding trans-national access of researchers
2. Joint activities to facilitate and integrate the access procedures, improve the services the infrastructures provide and further develop on-line services, ensuring their connection to the EOSC
3. Develop and trail models, mechanisms and practices for the long-term engagement of funders in supporting and making transnational access sustainable beyond EU funding
Pilot - Scope
I. Rottmann OPTICON Board Meeting – Heraklion, 5.11.2018 www.radionet-org.eu Contract No: 730562
EC seeks a model of co-funding actions for TA (FP9) In the long term, a commitment of the national funders to TAs is
expected As a result, reforms/structural changes at national level may
follow, however this is not a requirement for the Pilot The pilot creates a network of the community core group
(access provider) and the funding agencies The funding agencies ≠ beneficiaries A sustainability model for RadioNet is not a goal of pilot
Access grants could be given to 3rd parties JRA in pilot should address the scope 2 (EOSC), other JRA via
Integrating Networks under Joint Research in FP9 RIs in FP9 will be co-funded actions, organised according to the
outcome of this pilot

Dec 2018 - Feb 2019 1st draft of the call
June 2019 adoption of the call
October 2019 release of the call
March/May 2020 proposal submission deadline
1 January 2021 start of the pilot
2019 is the preparation year for the pilot
Pilot - Timeline
I. Rottmann OPTICON Board Meeting – Heraklion, 5.11.2018 www.radionet-org.eu Contract No: 730562
TA is the heart of RadioNet view of the pilot All RadioNet TA providers will be beneficiaries For EVN cascade model will be envisaged
JRA activity will focus on developing integrated and coordinated TA access/archive (EOSC)
NA activity will focus on exploring future TA co-funding access scenarios Through forum bringing together the providers, funding
agencies, EC and other stakeholders (e.g. ASTRONET)
MGT model tried and proven consortium structure, adapted for equitable OPTICON and RadioNet cooperation/representation
