Adventures in Hebrews 11, Part 1Verses taken from the American King James Version, unless stated otherwise.
Today we’re going to
read from Hebrews chapter 11.
“Faith is the confidence that what we hope
for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see. Through their faith, the people in days
of old earned a good reputation” (Hebrews 11:1-2 NLT).
Lovely breakfast. Thank you,
dear.
You’re welcome.
Saturday morning at the Reynolds’ house.
When you have confidence in something, you
are sure of it. You believe something will happen, or that something is
true.
Mommy is a great cook.
I know that you will take us
to batting practice this afternoon because you
promised to.
I’m hoping that the boys will clean
their room when they come home from
school.
Faith assures us about things that haven’t
happened yet or things that can’t be seen by
our human eyes.
Because you have
confidence in me, you know that
I will take you to batting practice.
We’ve never gone to this
batting range before, so how do we know
it’s there?
We saw the
brochure! Yes.
And we made reservations.
Yes. when
we know something will happen, even if it hasn’t yet, we can take steps toward making
it happen.
“By faith we understand
that the entire universe was formed at God’s
command, that what we now see did not come from
anything that can be seen” (Hebrews 11:3
NLT).
The first part of the verse is
talking about how God created the universe.
Because the Bible tells
us so?
John 1:3 says, “All things
were made through him, and without him was
not any thing made that was made”
(ESV).
That’s right. We can have faith in
what the Bible tells us about Creation, and we can also learn of discoveries
in science that point to a Creator.
How do we know that God created the world?
It’s like with the brochure for the
batting range! We haven’t seen the range, but we know that it’s there because of this
brochure.
Mr. Hopkins gave that to us. He’s been to the
batting range with Jeffrey and
Melissa.
Melissa’s my friend!
There are many things in the world that
we haven’t personally seen-or that can’t be seen with our eyes-
but we know they are there because we trust in reliable sources of
information.
The Bible is one of our
chosen reliable sources of information.
We trust in it because we see the good results of doing
so and because we know and love the author-God.
So what we’ve gathered so far is that faith
is rather mysterious.
oh, boy! Dad’s putting on his Old
Testament costume.
Yay!
To be continued…
