FALL SPRING
What are students taking in the first What are students taking in the first term?term?Engineering Graphics/CAD
(1 cr. hr) [or ENGR 1962 Engineering Communication]
Calculus I (4 cr. hr)
Chemistry (4 cr. hr)
Intro to Engineering Analysis (4 cr. hr)
Humanities or Social Science Elective (4 cr. hr)
But don’t skip Calculus!!
Anybody can take the 1 Credit “Exploration” Elective here
Anybody can delay taking CAD until a later term
ELEC, CSYS, AERO take later
ELEC, CSYS take Computer Science I
AERO take Physics I
Any student can move IEA to 2nd semester; Several were strongly encouraged to do so!!
Heads Up for 2Heads Up for 2ndnd Term Courses Term Courses
Engineering ‘Exploration’ Elective (1 cr. hr)
Calculus II (4 cr. hr)
Science Elective (4 cr. hr)
Physics I (4 cr. hr)
Humanities or Social Science Elective (4 cr. hr)But avoid skipping
Calculus 2!!
Take Graphics/CAD if “Exploration” Elective was taken in 1st Term
AutoCAD Option under development for CIVL/ENVE
Not all students are required to take an “Explorations” electiveDepends on major
BIOL-1010 (CHEG)
BIOL-2120 (BMED) (Important change !!!!!)
BIOL-1010 or CHEM-1200 (ENVE)
ENGR-1600 Intr Materials (MECL, NUCL, EPOW, MATL)
CHEM-1100 (ELEC, AERO)
CSCI-1200 Comp Sci 2 (CSYS)
CSCI-1100 or ENGR-1600 (CIVL)
Flexible (MGTE) AERO take Physics 2 or Fund. of Flight
CSYS take MATH-2800 Discrete Struct.
Students who skipped IEA in the fall should probably take it in place of the Science Elective or the “Physics 1” slot during the 2nd term
Overview of One Credit Engineering Overview of One Credit Engineering CoursesCourses
Column A (“CAD” Course)
All students have to take a course from this column at some point (but not necessarily in the first term of the first year)
ENGR-1200 Engineering Graphics and CAD
ENGR-1962 Engineering Communication, Visualization and Documentation◦ An alternative to ENGR-1200 Engineering
Graphics and CAD◦ Recommended for EE, CSE, IME, CHME
ENGR-196X Graphics/CAD using AutoCAD◦ In development for S11 or F 11◦ Especially recommended for Civil and
Environmental Engineering
Column B (“Explorations” Course)
BMED, ELEC, and CSYS do NOT have to select a course from this column (but they may)
Others have one course recommended, but may choose anything
Next slide shows courses and recommendations
Take one from Column A and one from Column BOrder is not important; ‘When’ is not important
ENGR-1962 “Engineering Communication, ENGR-1962 “Engineering Communication, Visualization, and Documentation”Visualization, and Documentation”
The goal of this hands-on course is to introduce students to basic concepts and skills in engineering communication. Topics include technical writing, project planning and proposal writing, data visualization, system modeling and simulation, engineering graphics and CAD, and effective uses of software tools.
Taught in same mode as ENGR 1200 Counts as replacement for ENGR 1200
One Credit Engineering “Exploration” CoursesOne Credit Engineering “Exploration” CoursesColumn BColumn B
ENGR-1300 Engineering Processes (F, S, Su)◦ Recommended for students interested in Aeronautical, Industrial & Management,
Materials, and Mechanical Engineering
MTLE-1960 Introduction to Materials Engineering (F)◦ Recommended for all students
MANE-1961 Introduction to Nuclear Engineering (F, Spring offering uncertain)◦ Recommended for students interested in Nuclear Engineering
CHME-1010 Introduction to Chemical Engineering (F only)◦ Recommended for students interested in Chemical Engineering
CIVL-1961 Introduction to Civil and Environmental Eng’g (S only)◦ Recommended for students interested in Civil or Envir. Eng’g
MANE-196X Introduction to Energy and the Environment (S only, may not be offered)◦ Recommended for all students
Any student may take any of these courses!!!However, students should make a choice according to their major
Note
Registration Registration ConsiderationsConsiderationsOn Oct. 14th , registration time tickets were
electronically sent- Most 1st yr will start on Nov. 18th
Students may register at that time and any time until November 22nd .
Do not have any financial holds or problems with your PIN
Log in to SIS before registration to remember PIN and registration process (CRNs, search)
Have multiple schedules so that registration is easy
Any problems during the day contact Registrar’s office for assistance x 6231(public terminals) or e-mail them at registrar@rpi.edu
Registration ProcessRegistration ProcessIf students can’t register before
Nov. 22nd, there will be a $ 75 late fee.
Registration will re-open on Dec. 13th to February 4th for all students who do not have any registration holds.
Remember the RPI scheduler is not tied to SIS. It will not show what classes are closed or restricted.

Answer: A 4000 level course for Engineering majors.
Communication Intensive Communication Intensive RequirementRequirementStudents must meet this requirement
before they can graduate from Rensselaer.
Students will need to take a course in their major that meets this requirement..
Students will need to take a course in the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.
PD2-STSS 4840 will satisfy CI for Engineering Students

Double/Dual Majors &Minors Double/Dual Majors &Minors Questions to consider Questions to consider What are my interests? Do I want to pursue two majors
with the same intensity? (why?)What will I miss out? What advantage does a minor,
dual, or a double have? What are the downsides?
Minors Minors Minors-16-20 credits in an area that is
outside your major. (e.g. Economics, Management, Psychology, Biology, Math, etc.)

Considerations Considerations MINORSPluses:
Easy to do - only four classesPursue an interest more in depth
Considerations:There are some required classes that need to be taken for a minor and they need to be planned out. Some required classes are only taught annually
Dual DegreesDual DegreesA Dual Degree is a combination of two
curricula. The total number of degree requirements are similar to that of a single major.
Some examples are:Aeronautical & Mechanical Computer Science & Computer Systems
EngineeringBiology& Psychology Mechanical & Nuclear EngManagement & EconomicsEMAC &Computer Science
Dual -ConsiderationsDual -ConsiderationsPluses:Pursue two majors in depthMore exposure to different fieldsMore flexible Career opportunitiesMinuses: Meeting the requirements for the dual major
needs careful planningMost free electives are used to meet other
major requirementsSome duals have more credits than the 128
creditsYou need to see 2 advisors to track rate of
progress
Double DegreesDouble DegreesTwo separate degrees are
obtained by completing all the major requirements for both majors.
Students need to have completed a minimum of 30 additional credits above the required number for their single degree.
Double ConsiderationsDouble ConsiderationsPluses: Two separate degrees with two
diplomasPursue two majors in depthMinuses:Can require an extra semester or two
(Financial aid is only for 8 semesters)The general public usually does not
distinguish the difference between dual and double degrees
Another Option : Co-Another Option : Co-terminalterminal
Instead of a dual or double degree consider pursuing a master’s
Students can graduate with both an undergraduate &graduate degree in 10 semesters.
Advantages:More thorough understanding of areaCan give you a competitive edge Challenges :GPA requirement-Careful planning
AP & Transfer CreditsAP & Transfer CreditsRPI Policy states that first year
students are allowed to transfer 32 credits to their CAAP report .
32 credits means a combined total of all AP &transferred courses.
If you have more than 32 credits of AP &Transfer credits, you and your advisor will receive an email stating this and a date you need to pick which courses to use.
