As a recognized leading global manufacturer of custom cables and assemblies, Cortland has been designing and building aerostat tethers for more than 35 years.

Important characteristics for aerostat cables are material stiffness and strength to weight ratio (B/D ratio) for increased payloads. The diameter of the tether should to be as small as possible to reduce or limit the aerodynamic drag.

Cortland selects optimal electrical and optical components based on radar, electro-optical, infrared, cameras, and other sensor and communication package demands to attain wider functionality. Mechanical components are chosen to achieve the lightest weight while providing the highest reliability. Our extensive expertise with high performance fibers (such as Kevlar®, Technora®, and Vectran®) enhance performance and reduce weight of our tether products. The entire package is extruded with a waterproof protective material such as polyurethane.

Our engineering team works directly with customers to design tethers specific to their needs. Each tether is designed with all ancillary components, such as a handling system and terminations.

We have developed tethers for commercial surveillance systems, and for aerostats up to 11893 cubic meters. We serve international customers including the European and UK armed forces, and the U.S. Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps.
