Before AfriNIC?

Why AfriNIC?

• Need for a registry to address IPN resources need of the region in an homogenous manner.

• Provide “proximity” service to Local Operators.

• Provide a environment to define Policies that are more relevant to the local realities.

• Increase training and awareness in the region on Internet IP technology

History

• First initiative back 1997 (when only RIPE NCC and APNIC were RIRs plus the InterNIC)

– Nashwa Abdel-Baki (Egypt)– Alan Barrett (South Africa)– Sana Bellamine (Tunisia)– Nii Quaynor (Ghana)

• First Regional meeting was held in Cotonou (Benin’98) bring everybody together and find a consensual approach!

History

• Consensus reached 2000 with the setup of AfNOG (African Network Operators Group) which had its first meeting in Cape Town in June 2000.

–AfriNIC to become the 5th Regional Internet Registry.

– An Interim board based on sub-regional representation was appointed one year later in Accra (AFNOG II - 2001),

– first staff hired in 2003, first business and implementation plan presented to the community in 2004,

– Application for recognition submitted in 09/2004, Accreditation in 04/2005 6

AfriNIC Operational Structure today

• Activities distributes among 3 countries:

– Mauritius: Head Quarters and global coordination

– South Africa: Technical Operations (1 Staff)– Egypt: Disaster Recovery and off site Backup

– 8 more to join in 2010

• Serving more than 600 Members from 53 countries in Africa

• US$ 2.1 M Operating Budget for 2010

• 11 Public Policy Meeting

• 15 Policies discussed and adopted

• 3 Policies currently under discussion

Training activities

Training has been an important part of activities since 2005.

Since 2006, training was focused on transition to IPv6 and LIR management.

More than 30 training sessions have been conducted in different countries in the region since 2005.

REPRESENTATION &

COOPERATION

• NRO: AfriNIC has continued to support and contribute to the NRO.

– EC, ECG, CCG, PCG & RS Ad Hoc.

• Regional Involvement with Gov:

– GWG meeting on Cybercrime for LEA

– Booth at the AU Summit on ICT

– Observer in the AU CITMC

• Continue collaboration with other regional organizations: AAU, AfNOG, AfTLD

– New MoU signed with AAU to matchup the remaining 50% of academic and Research Institution membership fees.
