•Aim-Why should we use renewable resources?

Define Non-Renewable Resources

•Finite = limited

• Cannot be replenished by natural processes.

• Once we use them, they're gone FOREVER.

What are some examples of nonrenewable resources?

Fossil Fuels- from the remains of organisms that lived millions of years ago

• Coal• Oil• Natural gas

What will happen in the future if we keep on using our non-renewable resources?

•We will run out of them

Define Renewable Resources

• Replaceable • Items that will keep coming back as long as we treat them properly.

• When we cut down trees for paper, we can replant new trees & get more paper.

Examples of Renewable Resources:

- Fresh water- Trees- Air- Sun energy- Bio fuel- Hydroelectricity- Solar energy- Wave power- Wind power

What will happen in the future if we use our renewable resources without

replacing them?

• If they are not replaced as fast as they are used we will run out of them.

How can over fishing occur?

Go to Section:

• Humans are removing too many fish

• Too few fish are remaining to reproduce and replenish the fish population

Name Alternative Energy Sources

(not fossil fuels):

• Hydroelectricity

• Wind power

• Solar energy

• Nuclear energy

Each has their own tradeoffs…

•Tradeoffs are advantages and disadvantages

• Dammed water forms electricity

Advantages:• No air pollution• No use of fossil fuels

What is hydroelectricity?

Disadvantages

• Disturbs aquatic ecosystems

What is wind power?• Wind forms electricity

Advantages:• No pollution• Doesn’t use fossil fuels

Disadvantages

• Wind not constant

• Many turbines needed

What is solar energy?• Sun

Advantages:•No pollution•Affordable

Disadvantages

• Nighttime

• Cloudy weather

What is nuclear energy?

• Splitting of atoms

Advantages:• Water vapor is the

only emission.• Low fuel costs

Disadvantages

• Radioactive waste (thousands of years)

• High maintenance costs

Energy conservation is vital!

• We need to conserve energy

Examples:

• Turn off lights

• Carpooling

• Use fan instead of air conditioner, etc…

How can we correct human impact on the

environment?

• Education• Laws• Nature preserves• Reduce• Reuse• Recycle
