After Nine and a Half years ….
In 2008 I arrived at St. Malachy Parish as a temporary assignment on my way to a sabbatical in Rome. My departing words to the parish were, “I hope and pray that as a parish, as a people you will decide to fix the property and make the church as beautiful as you are beautiful.” To my surprise I was appointed pastor while I was in Rome. I came home and December 12, 2008 my first day as pastor. I came in expecting the same kind of church I had in New Orleans, you expected a “normal Boston priest” my first year was a train wreck!!! So many people left St. Malachy Parish, I was devastated, then I figured out that many (not all of course) of those who left came to this parish because it fit their model of church. The problem was that I did not fit “their” model and they left and left and then more left. A few years in we were getting used to each other. We started to have fun being Church. Music changed, religious education program changed, the property started to change. My first Fall here we renovated the parking lot and put up the back deck. The work began! We started the Sock Exchange and continued the Lowell Shelter. We reinstated the “Baptismal Gown” used after baptism and parishioners who sew made some and before you knew it a sewing club was created. I could go on and on reflecting on my time here. I have loved time at St. Malachy. So many of you have made yourselves available to become part of my “extended family.” We have laughed together, drank coffee together, and on snowy Sunday mornings after the 8 am Mass I even made breakfast for you (since so few were at Mass because of the snow). We have prayed together, I had the opportunity to visit or call you when you were ill, we played cribbage together and celebrated being church. Many of you have begun to serve the parish community for the very first time. Ministries like visiting the homebound, communion services at assisted living centers, readers, extraordinary ministers of Holy Eucharist, feeding the poor and needy. It has been such a privilege to see so many of you become “church” in so many beautiful ways. This coming June I will be reassigned to Woburn. My heart is broken as I am packing, but I am also humbled that Cardinal Sean thought of me to be pastor. As I am preparing to leave, I am in awe at how much you have helped me to be a better priest and person. I am indebted to this parish. Fr. John Capuci
