Version. 2.0

2014-2015

Northbank BID Air Quality Briefing

INTRODUCTIONSITUATION• Current level of awareness of the issue – an

individual perspective

• Poor air quality in The Northbank BID is complex but broadly the result of emissions from:

• Transport (cars, taxis and buses)

• Buildings (gas from boilers)

• Supply chain (LGVs and rigid HGVs)

• There is a great deal of work already being done by the council, the GLA, TfL and DEFRA but not all targets are being met

• We need the help of the business community

INTRODUCTIONHEALTH IMPACT• Poor air quality has a significant impact on our health

• It is not a remote issue but one very close to home and work:

• Over 4,000 deaths in 2008 in London were attributable to poor air quality

• Air quality in the Northbank BID area does not meet health based targets for some pollutants

• Air pollution in London is associated with cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary disease, lung cancer and respiratory disease

• Poor air quality can affect the lung capacity of young children

• The economic cost of the health impact of poor air quality in the UK has been estimated to be around £15 billion
