Types of Architecture, Models & Processors

Ability to run on 64-bit architecture CPUs

Pseries (i.e. POWER Architecture) CHRP= Common Hardware Reference Platform

IBM System p5 510 Express

IBM System p5 520 Express

IBM System p5 520Q Express

Four 64-bit 1.65 GHz POWER5+ processor cores

One or two POWER5+ 2.1 GHz

Four 64-bit 1.65 GHz POWER5+ processor cores

• Power5– 9’th generation in IBM’s 64 bit microprocessor

technology– Processor speed 1.65 to 1.9 GHz (p590/95)– Goes up to 64-way (p-595)– Supports simultaneous multithreading (hyper-threading

version of IBM)– Micro partitioning (aka SPLPAR)– Virtual LAN– Shared Ethernet and Virtual SCSI

POWER Arch Design & Evolution (cont).

File system

JFS/JFS2 (Journaled File System)

– JFS a log based file system

• improves recovery maintaining a circular update log

• much faster than a full fsck walk of the file system in the event of a failure

• AIX 5L offers 64 bit JFS2 system

• JFS2 an expanded file system, capable of 1 TB files and 4PB file systems

• JFS2 file system allocates inodes dynamically unlike JFS

• Information for a particular inode can be displayed using the istat commands

2) Using SMIT (next slide)

How to grow FS?

 How to use SMIT?

•There are number of system management tools that can be used by the system administrator, such as SMIT.

•SMIT provides graphics or ASCII support for most system administration• smitty FastPaths (i.e. shortcuts)

Find a smitty FastPath by walking through the smitty screens to getto the screen you wish. Then Hit F8. The dialog will tell you whatFastPath will get you to that screen. (F3 closes the dialog.)

# smit installp# smit tcpip# smit update_all# smit device# smit system# smit diag

What are Fix Packs and where do we get it ?

Fixes:A software maintenance package such as an interim fix, fix pack or PTF that solves one or more product defects.

Maintenance Level:A Maintenance Level (ML) is a release that contained service updates for AIX releases, but often also contained new features and functions.

Technology Level:Technology Level (TL) denotes an AIX release that contains new hardware and software features, as well as service updates.

Concluding Service Pack:A CSP is the last Service Pack to be released for an AIX Technology Level.

Service PackService Packs contain service-only updates (also known as PTFs) that are grouped together for easier identification.
