INTRODUCTIONBACKGROUNDONTHEPROGRAMME

TheBritishMuseumestablishedtheInternationalTrainingProgrammein2006.Theprogrammewasinitiatedtwoyearsprevious,asaresultofacontactfromtheSupremeCouncilforAntiquitiesofEgypt,nowtheMinistryofStateforAntiquities,whothensentsevencuratorsforsixweeksinLondon.Inthenineyearsthattheprogrammehasbeenrunning,therehavebeen183participantsfrom27countriesintheMiddleEast,Africa,southandeastAsiaandLatinAmerica.Recruitmentisthroughgovernmentbodies,individualmuseumsandacademicbodies,orsometimesfromothercollaborativeprogrammes.In2006theprogrammewasfundedbytheBritishMuseum,and,from2007todate,hasbeenfundedexternallythroughdonationsandsponsorship.

Therearethreeelementstothemainprogramme:atrainingprogrammeattheBMwhichincludespresentations,workshopsandvisits;aplacementinaBMdepartmentbasedonparticipants’specificareaofinterest;andatendayplacementatapartnermuseum.Thepartnermuseumsare:

In2015theMarie-LouisevonMotesiczkyCharitableTrustpledgedachallengefundtosupportthecontinueddevelopmentanddeliveryoftheITP.ThegiftwasmadeinhonourofthedirectorshipofNeilMacGregor(2002–2015)andrecognisedthetenthanniversaryofprogramme.ThroughadditionalsuccessfulappealstotheBritishMuseumMembersandPatrons,andwithgiftsfromtheAmericanFriendsoftheBritishMuseum,aswellaslegaciesandrenewedgrantsfromtrustsandfoundations,theITPhasbeenabletodevelopfurtherpost-fellowshipopportunitiesforitsglobalnetwork.Theextendedprogrammeincludes:

§ ITPcollaborativeawards.

§ TemporarydisplaysattheBritishMuseum.

§ Researchfellowships.

Eachofthesewillbeevaluatedastheycomeonstream.

Aswithpreviousyears,participantshadverypositiveviewsofthecoursebook.Allthoughtitwasclear,wellstructured,usefulandsufficientlypractical.Respondentswerealsoaskedhowthecoursebookcouldbeimproved.NonerespondentscouldthinkofanywaystoimproveitotherthanhavingmorebackgroundinformationoutsidetheBM,whichisarguablynotitspurpose.

Trainingisaninherentlydifficultactivitytoorganisebecause:

§ Thevalueofthetrainingdependsontherecruitmentofpeoplewiththeappropriatelanguageskills,motivationandknowledgetomatchthelearningoffer.

§ Peopledifferintheirlearningstylesandpreferences.Trainingcouldbedescribedasagroupactivityforanindividualandhighlypersonalactivity.Sometimestraineeshaveunreasonableexpectationsabouttheextenttowhichtrainingcanmeettheirspecificneeds.

§ Someaspectsofdeliveryareoutsidethecontrolofthetrainingprovider.Thisisespeciallythecaseforplacements,suchasthepartnerprogramme.Itisalsotrueforpresenters.Sometimesaspeakerwillagreetotalkononesubjectandthendecidetospeakonanother,whichcanresultinduplicationbetweenspeakers.

§ Deliveringtrainingrequiresamixofdifferentskills.Highlyexpertpeopledifferintheirpresentationskillsanditisnoteasytoaskaveryseniorpersontoattendapublicspeakingcourse.

ThisevaluationsuggeststhatITPhasreachedalevelwhereorganisationalissuesareaswellmanagedaspossible.ParticularlyimpressiveisthewarmrelationshiptheITPteamdevelopswiththeparticipants.Thishasimportantbenefitsinhelpingtraineestotrustthevalueofthetraining,andalsoinbuildinglongtermrelationships.

ParticipantsexpressaneedtospendmoretimeinBMdepartments,butresponsesfromBMrepresentativessuggeststhiswouldnotbewelcomed.

Previouschallenges–poorEnglishskillsintrainee-didnothappenthisyear,whichisconfirmationoftheteam’sskillinrecruitment,andalsooftheimportanceofhavingthetrainingteaminchargeofrecruitment(whichisnotthecaseinotherprojectsintheBM).ProblemsofpoororganisationinaBMdepartment,whichhappenedlastyear,weren’t

BMSURVEYForourITPannualreport,wewouldliketoincludesomeofyourthoughtsinyourownwords.PleasewriteaparagraphonONEofthefollowingforus:Highlights…IfthereisonehighlightoftheITPforyou,whatwoulditbeandwhy?ItcouldbeanITPordepartmentalsession,adayoreveningtrip,aconversationwithanITPcolleagueorstaffmember,apieceofinformationyouweregiventhatyouwillalwaysrememberorafriendyouhavemadewithwhomyouwillalwayswanttostayincontact.Yourfellowparticipants…WhatwasitlikesharingyourITPexperiencewithpeoplefromdifferentcountriesandprofessionalbackgrounds?Whatdidyoulearnfromeachother?Whatqualitiesdoyouhopeyoubroughttothegroup? ilikedthewell-comepartyarrangedbyBMstaffverymuchbecauseofitintroductiontoalltheparticipantsandBMstafftakeplace.Thewaythewellcomeusandgiveusafeelinglikewearetheirfellowsisamazing.Actually,Ispentagoodtimewithcollegesfromabout14countries.thiswasthefirsttimeformemeetthisnumbersfromdifferentcountries.wespent42dayseatanddrinkwitheachother.Itwasthefirsttimeformetocookinthiscourse,alsocookwithcollegefromPakistan.alsoIcookedfortheladieswhowerewithmeinthepartnermuseuminManchester.alsoItwasagoodthingformetocometomycountryholdingthetitleofSelfieKing.Since2012whenIfoundthelinkoftheITPattheBritishMuseumwebsite,IstartedtokeepcontactwithITPstaffbyemailandeveryyearIfoundpositivereply.ThosePastITPinternationalparticipantswhoIknewthemgavemeclearinformationaboutthisprogrammeandhowIcanbenefitfromthistraining.Afterhardcontactandattheendof2015apositiveemailaskedtosendmyresumeandshortexpressionthenIrealizedthatmydreamcomestrue.InspiteallcircumstancesthatourcountryYemenisfaced.ThenIstartedtheprocessofVisawithgreatsupportandhelpfromITPstaff,eventuallyIjoinedtotheprogrammeandcametoUK.InthisprogrammeIamgettingnewexperiencesthatallowmetogobeyondmuseumfield,mycoreresponsibility,andsharedourknowledgebetweenparticipantandtounderstandourmuseumsbetteraswellasbuildgoodrelationswithourfellow.Themostimportantthinginapartnershipbetweentheparticipantsinthe programtogiveagoodimpressionandusefulinformationaboutyourcommunity andyourcountry'sculturealsoyourorganizationandmostimportantlywe exchangedexperiencesandbothofusspokelargelyabouthiswork,whichgave ustheopportunitytoopenupprospectsfortheexchangeofexperiences betweenusIwouldliketohighlightthesessionaboutThecultureheritageandpeacebuildingwhichIbelieveitcoversoneofthemostimportantchallengeforallofus.Ithinkkeepingthehumanculturalresourcesawayfromtheconflictsshouldbeonthetopofourgoalsforthefuture.AsIhavementioned,itissodifficultformetochooseonlyonehighlight.PerhapsitwouldbeconversationswithIanJenkinsregardingmyRoom3projectandhisupcomingexhibition,andhavingapossibilitytohaveaninsightinthebehindthescenedevelopmentoftheproject.Formethisisinvaluableexperience.Ilearnedfrommyfellowparticipantsthattherearenolimitstoourpossibilities,regardlessofallpracticalobstacles.Theenthusiasm,knowledge,willtoexpanditconstantly,hardwork..canbringthebestoutofeverymemberofourmuseumcommunities.Ourpowerliesalsoinourcontactsandconnectionsandinourreadinesstoshareinformationandknowledge.Itwasapleasuremeetingandworkingwithfellowmuseumprofessionalsfromaroundtheworldandlearning

fromthem.ThebondthatIdevelopedwithotherparticipants,colleaguesatBritishMuseum,andManchesterMuseumshasbeenveryenrichingandIlookforwardtobuildinguponthisrelationshipinfuture.ITPaffordsustheopportunitytoconstantlylearnfromeachotherandwidenourhorizon.ITPisquitemeaningfultomesinceit’smyfirsttimetostaywithagroupofforeignfriendsinaforeigncountryfor6weeks.6weeksisquitealongperiodforanewmom.However,duetoITP’sintensearrangementandallthelovelyparticipants,Ididn’tsufferalotbecauseIdidn’thavetimetofeelsosorrowfuloreveryeveningIhaddinnerwithmyadorablefriendsandchattedwitheachotheronfood,culture,religion,society,families,etc.Withinus,nothingseemedtobesensitive.Wewerefreetoshareourideasandmakecomments.ItwasthefirsttimethatIsawmybeautifulEgyptianfriendswithoutscarf.ItwasmyfirsttimethatItouchedmySouthAfricanfriends’braid.ItwasthefirsttimethatmyGreekfrienddidamake-upformeforexhibitionshowsandfarewelldinner.Somanyfirsttimes.Allofthesecontributedtobetterunderstandingofeachother.Wearedifferent,butweindeedrespectandvalueeachother.ThankstoITP.Ihaveverystrongfeelingsandthoughtsaboutthisamazingprogramme.WhileIwasthere,Iwasverybusytounderstandthemeaningandtheinfluenseofthisexperienceintomylife.NotjusttheprogrammeitselfbutalsoBM'speopleandwonderfulparticipantsfrom12differentcountriesarealsoresponsibleforthat.Imadesomeverygoodfriendsandalltogether,wesharedourpersonalandprofessionalexperienceswithnofeelingofconsience.Myprofessionalexperiencesandmypositivewayofthinkingandacting,iswhatIhopetobroughtwithmeinthisprogramme.Thanku!!ThehighlightoftheITPwastheenergyofthegroup.Thiswasprobablybecauseoftheperfectorganizationandthewarmfriendship.Eventsandattractionswerebeautiful.Friendsfromdifferentcountriesandcultureweremixedandtogetheragreedonleastcommontohaveafruitfultraining.TheITPexperienceintheBritishMuseumwasformeaonce-in-a-lifetimeexperience.Asresearcherintothehistoryofarchitecture,Ialwayswonderandendeavourtofindoutwhatmytopicmightbemovingtowards–Iaminterestedinthefutureoftheresearchandseeinthetransformationofscholarlyinvestigationintoexhibitionthefinestwayinwhichtofulfilmyobjectives.Scholarlyresearchisasearchfortruthandbeautyinthepastthathelpsusunderstandandtolivethepresentbetter,toplanforabetterfuture.Sharingtheresultsofresearchwiththeacademiccommunityisexceptionallyvaluableandworthwhile,buttosucceedintherightwayinpresentingresearchtothewideraudienceforculturalmattersisacomplexmatterandastillgreaterchallenge.TheexperienceintheBritishMuseum,inwhichIhadtheopportunitytobecomeacquaintedwitheveryphaseofthiscomplexprocessofthetransformationofscholarlyresearchintoexhibition,includingconversationandinterpretation,legalandeconomicissues,designanddialoguewiththeaudience,theeducationalroleofanexhibitionandmanyotherphasesaffordedmeafoundationforbeingabletodevotemyselftoparticipationinthissplendidmission.Iwasparticularlygladaboutandgratefulfortheabilitytoworksocloselytogetherwithinternationalexpertsdedicatedtothehistoricalheritage,forIbelievethatconnectednessviathehistoryofartandculture,viajointexhibitionsandprojectsisawayinwhichtheworldcanbeintertwinedwiththefinestofalllinks.ThehighlightofmystaywasworkintheGreekandRomanDepartment,understandingtheimportanceoftheinterpretationofresearchandthepossibilityofinternationalcollaborationand,aboveall,thesenseofbelongingtoafamilyofscholarsdedicatedtotheculturalheritageanditspresentation.Besidethattheprogramwasusefultome,itforcedmetofacemyfears,timeandagain.IalwaysgetnervousandscaredofpresentingbutITPhadforcedmetodothisonregularterms.IlikedthatIbecamemoreconfidentasthetimegoes.

Highlights...AdiscussionwithIanJenkinsduringtheRoom3presentationandatthebarbequeevening.IwasastonishedbyhisknowledgeonvarioustopicsacrossdifferentfieldsafterImentionedthatI'mplanningasculptureexhibitioninthenextthreeyears.HegavemepointersanliteraturereferenceIneverthoughtof,healsomentionedsomeinternationalsponsorshipsIcouldmakeapplicationstoforresearchfunding.IdidnothavetobebasedintheGreeksectionforhimtosharehisknowledge,hejustdid.HaditnothavebeenforITPIwouldn'thavemetthegreatexpert.IwoulddefinitelystayincontactwithBarbara.FellowParticipants....ItwassuchanamazingexperienceandIfeelprivilegedtohavehadtheopportunity.I'velearnedsomuchfromtheseparticipantsandjusttomentionafewthatstandout:TheChildren'sMuseumwhichisdirectedbyShreenfromEgypt.AlthoughIknewofsuchmuseums,itwasmyfirsttimegettingtounderstandwhattheyreallyareaboutandhowtheyarestructured.I'vehadlatenightdiscussionsoverbiscuitsandcoffeewithShreenwherebyshesharedhereducationalprogrammeswhichIintendtosharewithmycolleagueintheeducationdepartment.BarbaraisanotheroneI'vehadawiderangeofdiscussionswithbutIfoundherloveforartamazingwhichhasmademewanttoreadmoreonart.SinceI'mplanningasculptureexhibitioninthenearfutureIwillbeusingherexpertisewhichshe'sveryexcitedabout.ThroughthisI'vealsodiscoveredthatShifromChinaworksforaninstitutionthatwasintalkswithmyinstitutionoveraSouthAfricanexhibitionwhichhadtogoChinabutdidnotduetobrokencommunicationandchangeinleadership.ThroughdiscussionswithherandafterIhavemetwithmysuperiors,Ihopeforthetalkstoresume.I'vealsohadacademicdiscussionswithAnaandwehopetohavecollaborationsinthefuture.OtherparticipantshavebeenamazingintheirownrightsandallthatwouldhavenotbeenpossiblehaditnotbeenfortheITP.IhopeI'vebroughtanalytical,scholarlyandcreativequalitiestothegroup.Iwillneverforgettheidealtemporaryexhibitionofstorms,war,andshipwrecks,andhopetostayincontactandlearnfromexhibitiondesignerClairasilearnedfromhertosharealldepartmentsinthecollectivedecisionNoteverydayinourworkinglifeweareabletomeetknowledgeablepeoplewhoresearch,curate,discuss,presentandwriteonspecifictopicsthatwedealdaily.Ifmoretimecanbespendtogetherwiththem,moreknowledge,experienceandskillswillbeacquiredfromthem.theITPprogrammewasusefulformetomeetalltheparticipantfromdifferentcountrywasabigexperiencetome,Ilearnalotofthingspersonnelandprofessional,thetimeIspenditinUK/BM/ITP/MEisunforgettable.Allpeoplewanttohelpyou,tosharewithyouidesskillsprofessionalandpersonnel.IwillbeincontactwithallparticipantsthankyouITPhighlightsIamveryhappytohaveworkedwithsomanyparticipantsfromallovertheworld,manyofwhomIcountasgoodfriendsaswellascolleagues.Newcastle,NortheastLondon,anewadventuretoexperienceInnewcastleIhaveStartedmynewadventurebyenjoyinganinternalbuildingtour,learningaboutthebuilding,especiallyitsdesignandseeingbehindthescenewonders.;Thenstrappingmeinforaclimblikenoother.ItwassuchanicetimewithmyITPfriends.WeexploredoneofNewcastleGateshead’smosticonicbuildings.OnceIreachedthetopIhavefurtheropportunitytolearnmoreaboutthestructureasIwalkacross

the3,043stainlesssteeland250glasspanelsthatmakeupitsuniquecurvedroof.StandingtallandadmirethespectacularviewsacrossNewcastleGatesheadQuaysideandbeyond–seeingthefamousbridgeslikeneverbefore.InNewcastle,youcanfigureouttheBritain’surbanheritagethatisoneofthemainsymbolsofhumanevolutionthroughhistorythatreflectsthecapacityofmantoovercomesurroundingenvironment;asitislistedin(WASHINGTONCHARTER1987.Allurbancommunities,whethertheyhavedevelopedgraduallyovertimeorhavebeencreateddeliberately,areanexpressionofthediversityofsocietiesthroughouthistory.Theseareasembodythevaluesoftraditionalurbancultures.

Quiteeasily,thebestpartoftheITPwasourinteractionwithourfellowparticipants.Throughourconversationswitheachotherandinsightsthatwegainedthroughsessionslike'CulturalHeritageandPeaceBuilding',theonethingthatstruckmewashowprivilegedweareinIndia.Security,resources,thefreedomtoexpressourselves,allthingsthatwetakeforgrantedarenotsoformanyothers.Itledtoadeepintrospectionabouthoweffectivelyweareactuallyusingwhatisavailabletousandhowmuchmorewecandoifweapplyourselves.Thediversityoftheparticipantsalsoprovedtoenhanceourlearning.Notjustthroughourinteractionbutalsoquestionsthattheparticipantswouldaskduringsessions.Theywerethingsthatwewouldn'thavethoughtofgivenourdifferentbackgroundsandlisteningtotheconversationsduringthesesessionswasquiteinformativeandthoughprovoking.MeetingpeoplefromIndia,Yemen,China,Turkey,Croatia,Greece,Egypt,Sudan,SouthAfrica,Britain,Scotland,Malaysia,Lebanon,andmoreisgreat.IlovethatIgotthisopportunity,andthediversityofthegroupwasjustgreat.Ilearnedthatmanymuseumsgloballyfacethesameissues,andevensawhowsimilarweallare,yetdifferent.IthinkthebestformeistohavechancetoseemanydifferentmuseumintheUK,soIcanknowhowtheywork.Nomatterwhereweare,wejustneeddosomethingfirstimportant,haveanicetimeandkeephealth.

funding.first,IlearnedtoputeducationdepartmentstrategyforlongtermandalsohowIcanevaluatetheworkaccordingtothestrategy,theyalsoprovidedmewiththejobdescriptionthatwillhelpmeandmycolleaguestoknowmoreaboutourdutiesTryingtogetyoungpeopletohavefuninthemuseumswhilelearningatthesametime,pushopendoorsinthegalleriesandthefactthatanyonecancomeupwiththeexhibitionproposal,teamspiritandtheirongoingexhibitiononline,whileitiscompletedinthemuseums.beabletogetcataloguesonline.LearningandCommunityOutreachespeciallytheusageoftheLearningKit.Schoolchildrenhaveanaccesstocultureandhistory,andthemuseumobjectsisagoodresourcetostartwith.OpenMuseum;CuratorsForum;VolunteersinMuseum;musicinmuseum),peoplecaneatanddrinkinmuseum(suchasinRivesideMuseum).Notmanyfamilycouldaffordtobuyfoodatthemuseumcafeteria;installstool/chairs/sofainsidethegalleryforvisitorstoenjoytheexhibition;KelvinHallconcept-museumasonestopcenterforcommunitywell-being(healthcentre,court,resourcecenter,cafeetc);kidsunder5friendly;handicappedpeoplefriendly.Ihavewholenewinsighttotheapproachtotheorganizationanddeliveryofexhibition-fromtheresearchphasetothefinaloutput.IfeltverystrongconnectionbetweentheprogrammeoftheBristolMuseumsandTheBritishMuseum-soIfeelthisasacontinuationofthesameexperience.theylearnedmethehowtoputstrategiesforeducationprogrammes-howtodealwithallmuseumdepartmentstoachievetwoaspectsofmuseum'sworkforcommunitylearningprogrammesandsuccessfulexhibition.1-theyhavegooddisplayingotherwiseinmuseumsorgalleries2-theyhavegoodpreservingfortheircollectionsinthestorerooms.3-theyhaveagoodprogramstoengagetheircommunitiestothemuseumsandgalleries.4-theyhaveaimsandmessagesthattheyneedtoreachtotheircommunity.Ifoundquiteinterestingandcleverthatinsometextsinthegallery,theymentionthatucanfindarelevantobjectinthegiftshop.Ussually,nexttosomefamouspaintings.Onlinegalleriesandcataloguesfortemporaryexhibitionsarereallyamazing.Ireallyhopeitcanbeappliedtomyfuturejob.Butthemajorbarriersmayliesinthecopyright.Forexhibitions,theyletaudiencemaketheirowndecisionsandgetinvolvedinit.Andtheyusemulti-sensoryapproachestofinishdisplay.ThosemethodsIwilltrytousetomyfutureexhibitions.thebiggestbarrierisalwaysfunding,Ifwehadfundingtocreatedisplaysasamazingasriversidemuseumwithinteractivevideos,andtalkaboutpeople'ssocialhistoryinthatveryengagingway,Iwoulddefinitelyattempttodoit.Iwouldalsoattempttoapplysomethingthatwouldn'tcostmuch,thatissocialmediaadvicefromJohnFerry,andplaceasocialmediapolicyandstrategywiththecommunicationsdepartmentatourmuseum.(asIamnotinthecommunicationsdepartmentIthinkthatwouldbeabarrierasIdoubttheywouldlistentome...)wespendagreatfultimeattheUKpartnermuseum,specificwedidalotofcontactwithalovelypersonnesandcolleagues.Theprogrammewasinterresting.intheNationalMuseumofBeirutwhereiwork,wehadaprojecttorenewallthestorerooms.andanotherprojecttobuiltanewbuildingforthelearningprogramme,anauditorium....Inthe2UKpartnermuseumswevisitedallthestoreroomsfordifferentartefacts,andwesawalotofstorageandconservationmethods,allthisexempelcanhelpmetoapplyandtodothebestinmycountry.anotherthingilearninthemuseumhowtheydothecontactwiththeaudience,specillywiththefamilyand

kidswell,theBMGthemainmuseuminthecitythereisasectionoftheBirminghamanditspeopleHistorythisideaisgodtomemaywereflectingtoourinstitutionanddiscusswithourboard.IlearnedsomanyideasthatcouldbeappliedinEgyptsuchasencouragingpeopleinEgypttodonatetothemuseumbyapplyingthebatterflywallforthemandIthinkthisideacouldbeappliedeasilywhereeverydetonatorcouldwritehisnameinabutterflyattheentranceoftheEgyptianMuseum,Museum'sBoxesofdelightisverygoodideatoengagetheschoolstothemuseumandIhavemanyReplicasintheChildrenMuseumIcouldBeginwithoneBoxandgotoschools.oneofgoodideasIhaveeverseenwastoengagecommunitybypresentingtheiropinioninthecurrentculturallandscapeandhowtheycloudshapeitinthefuturebypresentingactivitycalledshapeyourculturallandscapeandanalyzingtheiropinionsconcerningtheimportanceofmuseuminprotectingandpresentingtheculturallandscape.amongtheprogramsofcommunityengagementintheUKpartnermuseumwasengagingpeoplewhojusthaverecoveredfromaddiction,itisnoteasytotargetthosepeopleinEgyptbutIwilltrytocontactoneoftheEgyptianhealthorganizationsthatdealingwithsuchcasesandpresentlecturesforthemattheEgyptianmuseum.atthechildrenmuseummyinstitutionIwillapplytheideaoffamilytablewithmanyeducationalresourcestoengagemorefamiliestotheChildrenmuseum,dressasromanisaniceactivityIexperiencedintheUKpartnermuseumthataimtoengagethechildrenandcouldbyappliedatthechildrenmuseumwithdifferentnamelikedressaspharaohs.concerningbarriers,theyaretwomainbarriers,thefirstoneisgettingtheapprovaltoapplytheseactivitiesandthesecondoneisthesupportedmaterialsneededfortheseactivities,ithinkicouldabletoapplysomeoftheseideasaftergettingtheapprovaloftheheadofmuseumsectorinEgypt.TheimportantthingtheyareverysmallstaffbuttheorganizingtheirworkverywellandofcoursetheyhavewonderfulprograminmuseumeducationandlearningCollectionmanagementandexhibitionpracticesCommunityinvolvementprojectsareattheforefrontandthatIfoundtobeimpressive.Iwilldefinitelyapplyallthethingslearnedandkeepintouchforadviseonfutureprojects.Theonlybarrierwouldbenotgettingsufficientfundingbutalotofprogrammescanstillbedeliveredwiththeresourcesmyinstitutioncurrentlyhave.Iwillmostdefinitelyencourageothercolleaguestosourceoutsponsorsfortheirprojectsandnotrelyentirelyonthemuseum'sfunding.Iwanttoopenmoreobjectstothepublic,andiwanttoencouragemorepeopletothemuseum.Butfirstweneedtoeducatepeopleunderstandmoreaboutmuseumandthehistory.
