President’s Report
I was honoured to have been elected to serve as president of Alberta Golf in its 99th year. It is a humbling experience to be included with all of the terrific men and women who have volunteered to lead this great association over the past nine decades. As an organization, we continue to reach great heights and through a forward thinking mentality that allows a smooth transition into the future.
The Alberta Golf Board of Directors, volunteers and staff should be proud of the hard work they were prepared to dedicate this year to establish the foundation for the transition from an operational to policy governance board approach.
Through the thoughtful and insightful leadership provided by consultant, Tammy Oberik, Alberta Golf was able to do a lot of soul searching to establish how the organization should create itself in the future for the continued betterment of the game. Surveys, retreats and meetings helped lead a trail to an exciting change for the future.
For 2012, Alberta Golf will form a nine member policy governance board while allowing its professional staff to continue to take on leadership of its operational imperatives. In a continuing effort to enhance our organizational efficiencies, in addition to reducing our number of board positions by half, we have also eliminated our executive committee which effectively worked as a board within a board. As well, for the first time we will enjoy the input of a member of the PGA of Alberta as Cottonwood Executive Professional, Tiffany Gordon has agreed to sit on our board.
Following the lead of Golf Canada and other provincial golf associations, we look forward to many successful years of strategic leadership under our new flagship policy governance model.
At the national level, I am pleased that I had the opportunity to work as Alberta’s representative on the Golf Canada Provincial Council. This body including delegates from each province provides a regular opportunity for the provincial associations to liaise on governance issues with our national organization. This step linked with the regular meetings of provincial association executive directors and Golf Canada staff on operational matters ensures continuity on programs, services and governance across Canada.
I would like to thank the volunteer members of this year’s executive committee who dedicated so much time and energy to assisting in this pivotal transitional year. First Vice President, Sandra Craig from the Pinebrook GCC was an inspiration who was always there to back me up; Second Vice President, Av Beirnes from the Sandpiper GC could always be counted on for providing great insight; and Treasurer, Bruce Petrie was a great governance resource. Well done, everyone!
Special recognition must also be given to the Alberta Golf Board who was asked to contribute many more hours this year on governance issues than has been the custom. Your energy and willingness to embrace new possibilities played a significant role in how this association will evolve into the future.
Finally, I have to express my gratitude to the Alberta Golf staff for continuing to push the envelope on creating and implementing programs and services of excellence. We have an operational offering second to none in Canada.
As we look forward to celebrating our 100th anniversary in 2012, there was a great deal of energy and enthusiasm expended on a number of projects that will make our centennial a stand out. Our Alberta Golfer magazine under the direction of professional writer Tyler Trafford in coordination with Parcom Marketing Inc. will be a fantastic compilation of 100 years of golf stories, profiles and trends. We will also host a Centennial Tournament and Gala at the Calgary Golf and Country Club; the site where it all began for Alberta Golf in 1912. A video production by Zoom Communications Inc. will definitely be a collector’s item as the insightful interviews of Alberta Golf Hall of Fame members along with a vast array of intriguing photographs will be fascinating. There will be unique souvenirs developed for our events and our year end Hall of Fame ceremony will celebrate the induction of Alberta’s golfing pioneers.
Health and wellness are buzzwords that will become the theme for Albertans. Golf as a lifetime sport and lifestyle could be considered the ideal solution and a reason why we must continue to preserve and promote our game for future generations.

Alberta Golf Industry Association Report
NAGA’s Inaugural Government Relations Campaign Comes to a Successful End
The National Allied Golf Associations’ inaugural government relations campaign came to a close in May with an extraordinary two day event, in Ottawa, promoting the golf industry. Our sport was featured prominently in major stories on the CBC News Network, the Sun Media chain, iPolitics, and a full‐page of coverage in Canada’s premier political affairs newspaper, The Hill Times. In addition, golf was featured in a lengthy interview with Jeff Calderwood, NGCOA Canada CEO and NAGA government relations director, on CTV’s Power Play broadcast, the country’s leading political affairs show.
The Ottawa effort capped off a three month push at the provincial and federal level, including six provincial awareness days in Quebec, Prince Edward Island, Alberta, Ontario, Manitoba and British Columbia. The tour was kicked off by Quebec Premier Jean Charest, at an exclusive dinner in Quebec City with provincial delegates, and went on to include the Premiers of Alberta and Prince Edward Island, federal ministers, numerous provincial ministers, leaders of provincial opposition parties, the federal Minister of Sport, federal NDP and Liberal sport critics, and Minister of Finance Jim Flaherty. In total 180 provincial and federal politicians met with golf industry representatives. Media coverage of our golf awareness tour was excellent with numerous television, radio, and print stories promoting our concerns.
The focus of all our events was raising the profile of golf as an industry and introducing elected officials to the size and scope of our business, as well as the economic, social, health and environmental benefits of the sport. Politicians of all political leanings were impressed by the campaign and regularly commented that they learned a great deal about the positive benefits that golf has on Canada’s economy and communities.
Our day at the Alberta Legislature was Tuesday, April 19th and we held meetings with Premier Ed Stelmach; Speaker of the House, Ken Kowalski; Deputy Speaker and Chair of Committees, Wayne Cao; Mel Knight, Minister of Sustainable Resource Development; Conservative MLA’s: Arno Doerksen; Ken Allred; Evan Berger; Robin Campbell; Cal Dallas; Wayne Drysdale; Art Johnston; Richard Marz; Peter Sandhu; Tony Vandermeer; Teresa Woo‐Paw; and David Xiao; Liberal MLA’s Harry Chase, Kent Hehr; and Bridget Pastoor and Wildrose Alliance member Paul Hinman. Our message was about the positive economic impact that golf offers and our fine environmental stewardship. During its Annual Convention in Saskatoon, the Canadian Society of Association Executives (CSAE) recognized NAGA’s Golf Awareness Campaign with the Associations Make a Better Canada award. The series of seven Golf Awareness Days across the country were recognized as the best government relations campaign by an association in the past year. Elizabeth Di Chiara, Executive Director of the Canadian Society of Club Managers and Jeff Calderwood, CEO of the National Golf Course Owners Association Canada proudly accepted the award on behalf of NAGA.
At the conclusion of the year, the Alberta Golf Industry Association members drafted a new set of bylaws to guide its operations for the coming years under the new brand name of NAGA – Alberta. It is envisioned that this newly aligned allied association group will achieve a more powerful reach on behalf of the golf industry by providing a united front.
Brent Ellenton Executive Director

Handicap and Course Rating Committee Report 2011 was a busy year for the Handicap and Course Rating Committee. The Committee was comprised of the following Volunteers and Alberta Golf staff: Provincial Director Sylvia Blasken North Zone Captain Ken Lyle Edmonton Zone Captain Borden Woytkiw Central Zone Captain Jack Brooks Calgary Zone Captain Howie Jaquish South Zone Captain Jeff Motherwell Alberta Golf Staff Jack Lane The Committee met February 22 via teleconference and continued to communicate via email throughout the year. A special thanks to Borden and Florin Bergh for presenting a Course Rating workshop in Lethbridge for our new Calgary and Lethbridge raters. Also a special thanks to Jack Brooks, who is resigning as Central Zone Course Rating Captain, for his commitment to course rating during his tenure with Alberta Golf. A special welcome to our all new Lethbridge course rating team members Jeff and Donna Motherwell and Jack and Chris Wilson. They have been a great addition to our provincial course rating group. Alberta Golf thanks Howie Jaquish, the new Calgary Course Rating team captain for his time and effort. He trained with the Edmonton Course Rating team, he trained new Calgary raters, he rated in the Calgary Zone, and assisted ratings with the South and Central Zones. Handicap Seminars Alberta Golf conducts educational seminars for the RCGA Handicap System each year. A total of 5 Handicap Seminars were conducted in 2011 ‐ 4 in person and one via video conference. There were a total of 108 attendees and 65 Member Clubs certified. This was a significant increase compared to 2010 as we saw a 32% increase in attendees and a 51% increase in Member Clubs certified. A special thanks to Jack Lane and Donald Stewart for conducting the seminars. RCGA Network The RCGA Network continues to be a great benefit to the membership. Members can now access the RCGA Network through the Golf Canada website, eliminating the need to have two different login details. The RCGA Network also received a face‐lift in 2011, with many new tools and icons added to enhance the user experience for both members and club administrators. USGA Course Rating Program (USGACRP) In 2011, Alberta Golf was able to switch to the new web‐based USGA CRP (www.usgacrp.org), which can be accessed at any computer with an internet connection. This simplified program removes the need to download software and any compatibility issues are eliminated. The course rating captains enter the rating information and Golf House accesses the completed rating for input into the RCGA Network for handicap purposes. The new USGA CRP also acts as an electronic database for each Member Club rated, including contact information and course rating data.
Courses Rated in 2011 A total of 20 courses were rated or re‐rated according to the long range schedule in 2011. A number of courses also requested adjustments due to changes they have made and our Captains did a great job of accommodating these requests. Thanks to Zone Captains Ken Lyle – North Zone, Borden Woytkiw – Edmonton Zone, Jack Brooks – Central Zone, Howie Jaquish, Calgary Zone and Jeff Motherwell – South Zone for their commitment to coordinating the course rating schedules. Thanks to the many course raters in each Zone who put in many hours, rain or shine, compiling the on course information rating forms. Both men’s and women’s ratings were provided for each course who received a rating/re‐rating and a summary of these courses are listed below:

Centennial Committee Report
We have completed one year of planning for our Centennial celebrations in 2012. Our team of committees are excited and dedicated to making sure that your centennial experiences will truly be memorable!
The magazine committee led by Duncan Mills with writer Tyler Trafford and the help of the editorial/research group have compiled an issue that you will not want to part with. Chalk full of interesting historical stories and pictures, it is nothing short of fantastic!
The Centennial Tournament / Gala Committee have a great day planned for you at the historical Calgary Golf and Country Club. It begins with a junior skills competition followed by a barbecue for the kids. Special guests and full details of the skills competition are still a work in progress. The next thing on the day’s agenda will be the golf tournament and there will be spots open to directors, volunteers and members. You can enter as an individual or bring a team. Period dress is encouraged for the tournament. The evening will feature a Black Tie Gala with a special program and a wonderful menu. Attendees may be slightly different from the tournament attendees as they are priced separately. This is going to be a memorable day capped off by an even more memorable evening. Hope to see you there!
The Marketing Committee led by Bob Planidin with the help of Donald Stewart have their marketing plans well in hand. They will be producing a video for your enjoyment and are well on their way with this production. This is a great team with great ideas but it is still a work in progress so stand by and then enjoy. We are hoping for you to have a sneak peak at the 2011 AGM.
The Souvenir Committee is led by Kim Carrington with assistance from Jack Lane. They have compiled a long list of items for sale and for give away. We will be opening an on line store to help look after sales and items will be given and others sold at AG tournaments and Centennial events. Member courses will be encouraged to hold a special club tournament or designate one of their existing tournaments as their Centennial Celebration. Prizes will be sent to clubs who participate for the winning person or persons. We would like them to wear either period dress or dress from the decade that their club was established for these events.
The year will end with the AGM and the Hall of Fame Committee led by Enid Botchett and Tyrone Edwards with Matt Rollins and Fran Marsden planning a very special evening at the historical Edmonton Country Club. This is currently a work in progress but what I can tell you is there will be a very special group of honourees. Period dress is encouraged for this grand finale. Don’t miss it!

Hall of Fame Committee Annual Report 2011
The Hall of Fame Committee did a policy review in 2011 and determined the Hall of Fame Electorate. Several nominations were received for potential Distinguished Service Awards and the Hall of Fame recipients.
Nominees not selected by the electorate in 2011 will have their nominations considered for four more years. We welcome any additional information on these candidates from the nominators.
Selected as this year’s Hall of Fame inductees are Diane Williams of Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club in Calgary and Bud Loftus formerly from the Calgary Golf and Country Club.
Diane has a very substantial amateur record and has represented Alberta many, many times at National and International tournaments as well as acting as non‐playing captain for the Canadian Team at World events. Diane has to this point been the Alberta Senior Amateur Champion seven times. Her accomplishments could take up this whole page! Congratulations Diane!
Bud Loftus began his golf career in Edmonton at the old Prince Rupert Course where his parents ran the concession. He won junior championships, the Alberta Open and played on Willingdon Cup teams. Bud turned pro in 1949 and worked with Henry Martel at the Highlands in Edmonton. He was a great student of the game and as well he is known for his great respect for the rules, the integrity and the traditions of the game. He was the head professional at Calgary Country Club from 1963 to 1975 when he retired.
Selected for Distinguished Service Awards for 2011 are Jean Smeland of Medicine Hat and Frank McBride of the Connaught Golf Club in Medicine Hat. We unfortunately lost both Jean and Frank way too soon.
Jean was President of the Alberta Women’s Golf Association in 1989 and 1990. She was a tireless worker for women’s golf. She was both a course rater and a rules official, plus she made the move to get the women’s golf association out of our kitchens and into an office with our first staff member. From all of those who followed, we certainly thank you for that!
Frank McBride was certainly a legendary golf volunteer. He served as President of the AGA in 1988 and 1989 but Frank was many more things to golf. He served in any volunteer position where someone was needed and perhaps his greatest contribution was taking the game and professionals to rural area golf courses where there was no pro to teach junior boys and girls to play the game. Golf thanks you Frank for a job well done!

Fran Marsden Steering Committee Chair Alberta Golf Hall of Fame
Magazine Committee We were very pleased with the success of the 2011 edition of The Alberta Golfer magazine. The committee had chosen a solid selection of editorial content to focus on the people and places in Alberta Golf that were newsworthy over the previous year. Combined with some interesting travel features, new course openings and other feature articles, we felt the editorial content of the 2011 Alberta Golfer magazine was of a very high standard. I feel what separates The Alberta Golfer from other similar magazines in the industry is the quality of our editorial content and the production values that go into the preparation and presentation of the magazine. We value and appreciate the roster of outstanding writers from around the province that prepare this content on a freelance basis for Alberta Golf. We are certainly eagerly anticipating the arrival of the 2012 Centennial Edition of The Alberta Golfer. Tyler Trafford has unearthed some amazing photos and stories of the men and women who have built golf in Alberta over the last century, and it seems that the more people that become aware of the scope of the project, the more stories are coming to light. It will be a daunting challenge for the Committee to select the most appropriate and interesting stories from the dozens of articles and topics that Tyler has written. The biggest challenge for me as Co‐Publisher of the magazine will be to sell enough advertising to support a magazine that will likely be in the 144‐page size range. It was a difficult year for many Alberta golf courses, but we are able to attract a great deal of advertising from outside the golf industry as well. We will also need as much support as possible from the corps of Alberta Golf Directors and Volunteers to make sure that the 2012 Alberta Golfer is as widely read as possible at the club level. It will be very important that we all take ownership of this once in a lifetime publication to make sure our fellow club members read and keep this special issue. Dunc Mills Alberta Golfer Magazine Committee Co‐Publisher
Marketing Committee Report Nationally, the Royal Canadian Golf Association re-branded themselves as Golf Canada in 2010 and introduced a new stylized maple leaf logo embracing a golfer as their new logo. The logo is reminiscent of the Hockey Canada brand. This change was well received throughout Canada and each provincial association was invited to follow suit in an effort to provide a similar family brand throughout the country. After considerable consultation with Golf Canada, the AG Marketing Committee and Executive Committee, the AG Board of Directors passed a resolution to adopt for 2011 an Alberta version of the Golf Canada logo, but to maintain the name Alberta Golf. The new red, white and blue logo will provide a fresh look for the organization was implemented in this our 99th year of operation. This year the Marketing Committee also continued to focus on improving communication and delivering relevant information to all stakeholders on a consistent basis. In coordination with the British Columbia Golf Association, we were pleased to launch our new website in February. Our new look was designed to be more user friendly, entertaining and effective in furthering our new AG brand. From the feedback received, we were able to hit a home run with the new site. Alberta Golf was represented at the two PGA of Alberta consumer golf tradeshows in Edmonton and Calgary as well as at the Telus Skins Game held this year at the Banff Springs Golf Course. Once again we had great success promoting Alberta Golf services and offering PPC memberships to public golfers. Media days were held for the RBC Insurance Alberta Open at Carnmoney; Sun Life Financial Alberta Men’s Amateur at Stony Plain and Sun Life Financial Alberta Women’s Amateur at Cottonwood. During the summer a professional company called Agenda Sport Marketing was hired to develop a fundraising program for AG using the Centennial year as a catapult into longer term support from corporate entities. Agenda SM’s focus is on connecting Canada’s business community with sport through innovative ideas in sponsorship strategy and brand activation, sport program creation, event fund development and athlete management. It is hoped that a long term agreement can be reached with Agenda SM and that this arrangement can produce more lucrative sponsorship support for AG in the future. Overall the marketing committee did a thorough job of improving communication methods and ensured relevant messages were delivered on a regular basis. Brent Ellenton Executive Director
Membership Committee Report The membership committee zone representatives this year were Bob McGinn (Edmonton), Troy Suddaby (North) and Joan Qually (Central). There were no volunteers from Calgary or South so Donald Stewart acted as the representative from those areas. After establishing our goals for the year, a number of action steps were identified. The first was to improve low attendance at zone meetings. Different approaches were taken to both inform clubs and provide more focused presentations and greater participant involvement through problem‐focused break‐out sessions. Debriefing conclusions were that attendance at these meetings does not support their continuation in the current format. We will look at the value of presenting future zone meetings through on‐line presentations. To increase membership it was felt we needed to define value propositions for specific club situations. The needs of a private urban club may differ from those of a rural public course. We need to identify differing needs and focus our efforts more appropriately and efficiently. Discussions also focused on the creation of different membership categories. There are many small rural courses, executive courses, etc, who might benefit from some of our services who are unwilling or unable to obtain a full membership. There is also the issue of some type of membership for other associations, e.g. CPGA, etc. Club visitations, in all zones but Edmonton, were done quite informally. In Edmonton, Bob McGinn determined that visits to clubs in his area were far too much work for one person. His response was to recruit two additional volunteers and between the three of them they completed visits to all clubs scheduled for visits this year. Realistic concerns regarding the time and expense of these club visits has been discussed and a discussion of alternative approaches will be held. We also proposed the development of a club visitation package containing up‐dated information on all programs offered by RCGA/Golf Canada and Alberta Golf. This is in response to concerns that messages being delivered by AG representatives varied and were not always accurate. The development of such a package could insure that the latest correct information was in the hands of zone representatives. As well, a brief summary sheet which provided names and contacts for each of the programs could be given out at the end of the visit. It is hoped to have this package ready for the 2012 season. The development of a distribution/activation plan for membership cards is needed. The committee feels we should obtain information from those provinces and Alberta clubs who have the highest success rate to determine what they did to achieve these higher levels. This will be done over the winter months and, hopefully, we can make concrete suggestions to all Alberta clubs on how to increase their activation levels. We await the final statistics for the 2011 season. In conclusion, at this point, we are a work in progress. Wendy Jerome Membership Director
Public Players Club Report
Membership in the Public Players Club saw a significant increase in 2011 as we reached 1634 members, an increase of 34% over 2010 numbers.
2007 2008 2009 2010 2011
Total Members 1050 1099 1157 1219 1634
% Growth 56% 4.5% 5.1% 5.4% 34%
PPC members received an Alberta Golf Hat Clip with ball marker, the 2011 edition of the Alberta Golfer magazine, as well as their Alberta Golf/Golf Canada membership card which includes a number of additional benefits.
We enjoyed a 65.7% renewal rate in the Public Players club in 2011, an increase of 6%. We continue to promote renewals throughout the season with a large push in January and again in April once their previous year’s membership expires.
January and May saw the largest increase in PPC members in 2011, 441 and 316 members respectively. January saw the largest increase in renewals with 412 members renewing for 2012 while May saw the largest increase in new members with 231 members signing up.
In 2012 we hope to continue to increase the size of our membership through marketing at the Golf Canada Centre, promotion of the program at the PGA of Alberta Golf Shows, Alberta Golfer Magazine, and Alberta Golf Website.

Rules Committee Report Early in the New Year the Rules committee held several telephone conference calls to address new issues and to continue work on programs started by last year’s committee. One of the first items we had to look at was certification and recertification of our rules officials. The RCGA has policies set out for Alberta Golf to follow as to certification of new Rules Officials as well as the re‐certification of our existing officials. In the past we had not addressed the re‐certification part too vigorously and there was concern that some very capable long term Rules Officials would no longer have their certification recognized. We determined that we must continue to work with the RCGA to provide enough opportunities for officials to maintain their certification or to advance to higher levels. In order to try to have more officials succeed at the level 3 seminars we decided to change the format from an intense weekend seminar and exam to a series of web based seminars followed by the weekend seminar and exam. Martin Blake, Lyle Cuthbert, Tom Zariski and Herb Schlotter put together the web based seminars and Martin Lyle and Tom presented the weekend seminar. The feedback received from the participants was very positive and we were able to attain close to a 50% success rate on the exam. Hopefully we can continue to refine the program and get increase the number of Level 3 officials. Congratulations to Court Fortems, Peter Boland, Bob McGinn, Dave Peterson and Tim Meyer on their success. We also had three officials successfully complete the Level 4 seminar and exam this year, congratulations to Peter Davies, Al Qually and Ian Baker. The Committee also had to address the declining entries to the Ladies Zone Four Ball Tournaments. We decided that a change of format and a reduction in the number of sites could possibly save the tournament from declining to the point of having to cancel some or all of the events. We renamed the tournament the Ladies Team Classic and changed the format to a two day 36 hole event with 18 holes of Chapman (modified alternate shot) on day one and 18 holes of combined net stroke play on day two. Overall the new event was well received with only a few problems with the new format and hopefully we can grow this tournament over the next few seasons. A Rules committee report would not be complete without at least mention of Pace of Play. During my last five years, as a Rules Official I have been lucky to work with some great officials who are passionate about speed of play and I have become equally passionate about it. This year I feel that we may actually have seen a significant improvement across the board even at some of the events that have been known for slow play in the past, but more so in the players that have been identified as chronic slow players in the past, hopefully this trend will continue. I would like to thank all of the Zone Rules Captains for all of their hard work this year, your contributions are an invaluable part of our organization and I look forward to working with you all in the future. Jim Richardson Rules Director
Alberta Golf Association Foundation Scholarship Report The Alberta Golf Association Foundation was pleased to receive a very high number of scholarship applications this year. Special thanks are extended to all of the patrons who support the scholarship program on an annual basis and to the volunteers who assisted us with our Casino Fundraiser for the foundation. This enabled us to improve our scholarship program and increase our awards on a yearly basis. Tournament Committee Report The committee was faced with some challenges this year as the Interprovincial team structure and funding policies underwent some major changes. Golf Canada decided that they would provide travel subsidies for provincial representatives of up to $120,000 in 2011, and $100,000 in 2012, with no travel subsidy in 2013 and beyond. Each Provincial Golf Association is to decide what degree they are able to subsidize the travel costs of players representing their province at each respective national championship. It is important to note that the RCGA will only provide the subsidies based on need and may not subsidize any province if grant proposals are not submitted or they feel that there is not enough “financial need”. Alberta Golf had included in the 2011 budget a contingency fund of $25k to address player subsidies should the RCGA cease funding teams to attend National Championships. Lori submitted a grant proposal to assist in covering the travel expenses of the interprovincial representatives and we received a grant for $6700 to help with team travel subsidies. The Pacific Coast Amateur Team was asked to pay a portion of their expenses as well and no team captain was sent. This helped in covering other player subsidies. Media releases were sent to all players and media outlets to update them on the changes both at the provincial and national levels. Florin Bergh, Borden Woytkiw and Lori lead the training sessions for Chairs and Starter/Scorers at the Spring Meeting. Tournament staff used the RCGA Network to verify handicaps and membership prior to all events this year. This process made the registration at tournaments run very smoothly although required more staff time to verify each individual prior to the events it was worth the aggravation that we have had in the past with competitors not bringing their membership cards. The participation in our junior girls and ladies amateur championships was disappointing considering the venues were Canmore and Cottonwood, but the Senior ladies event was full to capacity at 120. The men’s Mid Am was at capacity at 176 at Priddis and continues to be a very popular event. Centennial tournament plans are underway. The tournament will be held at the Calgary Country Club in the beginning of August, 2012. The event will include a net stableford tournament for 120 players, a junior Skills Competition and clinic and a Gala dinner. We are also going to encourage clubs to host their own centennial celebrations. Dress in period attire for the year their club came into existence and provide souvenirs etc. as incentive. Tournament staff used the RCGA Network to verify handicaps and membership prior to all events this year. This process made the registration at tournaments run very smoothly although required more staff time to verify each individual prior to the events it was worth the aggravation that we have had in the past with competitors not bringing their membership cards. Volunteer Development Director The Volunteer Committee fulfilled a number of our goals set out for 2011 in order to educate and inform both new and existing AG volunteers. The Volunteer Orientation was conducted as a webinar on February 1st. It was well attended again this year with 18 volunteers coming online. The presentation was updated this year to include a number of new items in order to provide a better overview of AG and Golf Canada services. The new brand of AG was highlighted as well. Thanks to Tyrone Edwards, Donald Stewart and Jack Lane for co‐presenting the Orientation. With the AG website undergoing a major facelift in 2011, we had the opportunity to promote the AG volunteer program in a more prominent way. Details on volunteer roles and the Volunteer Manual were published to the public site so that all interested applicants can have a better understanding of the AG volunteer program. I co‐presented the Volunteer Recognition program and awards at the AG Spring Meeting in Edmonton with Sandra Craig. This is always a great opportunity to highlight some of the fantastic personalities and amazing contributions of our dedicated volunteers. A highlight this year was Dunc Mills receiving a standing ovation for his commitment to AG during the past 20 years. AG clothing, business cards and name tags were again distributed as per policy to promote the AG brand. The new logo has been well received and having our volunteers proudly wear and promote the new brand is a great way for AG to be visible to our membership. Training was provided to the volunteer group in all areas including tournament functions, player development, membership visitations and handicap and course rating. We will continue to evolve our training programs in order to ensure that our services are best in class. I had the opportunity to involve the Zone Council Chairs in many discussions regarding training and engagement. From these discussions the Zone Council Chairs will be a part of the Zone Council Volunteer Committee in the new AG structure. Jack Lane also had the opportunity to again be involved with the Nominating Committee. He collected volunteer profile forms and acted a resource of information regarding volunteer aspirations, feedback and analysis. Al Qually Volunteer Development Director
Finance Committee Report
The Association recorded a loss from its operations of $81,978 compared to a surplus of $78,868 in 2010 and a surplus of $60,076 in 2009.
As noted in our financial statements, Casino revenues are recognized as revenue in the year to the extent the Association incurs qualifying expenditures. The major impact of this is to recognize the revenues from the casino held at the end of 2011 in 2012 with the balance being recognized in 2013. Also, for unrestricted endowment funds, the Association now includes investment income and gains on the investments in income in the current year and accounts for withdrawals as a reduction of these funds.
After several years of declining membership numbers they increased to 57,609 in 2011 compared to 53,975 in 2010 and 56,203 in 2009. Hopefully the numbers will continue to increase as Alberta Golf relies heavily on membership dues to cover expenses
Tournament and committee revenue also reversed its trend an increased to $505,269 from $488,069 in 2010. This increase from more entries and grants however there was a decrease in sponsorship.
Tournament and committee expenses in virtually all categories were up significantly from the prior year. In particular, an increase in travel and accommodation, banquets and meals and professional fees contributed to the increase from $706,879 in 2010 to $798,195 in 2011. In 2011, professional fees include costs associated with the preparation of our Centennial magazine and video.
Administration expenses were slightly higher in 2011. Salaries and benefits paid to the staff were down from 2010. Office expense was higher than last year due to staff attending the Alberta Sport Summit in Banff and Management expenses on the Endowment funds. Professional fees increased due to an increase in fees charged to audit the financial statements. Generally, the balance of administration expenses were lower than in 2010 as efforts continued to better manage expenses in an era of contracting revenues.
Our unrestricted cash position decreased to $151,297 at the end of 2011 from $255,550 at the end of 2010. This was due mainly to receivables being higher at year end. We did not utilize our line of credit in 2011.
The balance in our endowment funds was down slightly as our withdrawal from the funds in 2011 was greater than investment income. Our fund balances still remain more than our initial investment.
In preparing the budget for 2012, we reviewed our revenue structure and program expectations for the upcoming year including the centennial year celebrations.

SunLife Financial Alberta Men’s Amateur Championship Stony Plain GCC July 19 – 22, 2011 The tournament was held at the Stony Plain Golf Course. The condition of the golf course was surprisingly good and the greens outstanding in spite of the inclement conditions that dogged all golf courses in Northern Alberta for over two months. Two holes were played under lift, clean and place or relocation to the nearest point of relief in the case of casual water. The opening round featured 14 players under par with Scott Stiles leading the way with a brilliant seven under par 65 but closely pursued by Darren Hupfer who shot a 66. The Committee and all the officials were determined that there would be no tolerance for slow play and no warnings issued before penalty assessment as there was to be no repeat of the 2010 debacle. Players were apprised at registration, told to read the speed of play card carefully and then reminded again by the starters. We are happy to report there were no slow play penalties and each round was completed in the allotted time. On the second day there was some wind blowing and only seven players broke par with the leader Scott Stiles increasing his lead. He shot 69 and had the only round in the 60's. Antonio Costa, a U.S. college player from Chile, moved into second place at 5 under par with a round of 70 to go with his initial round of 69. Only 55 players survived the cut line of 48 players and ties. This was the lowest cut line in recent memory at 152. Fine weather on day three brought the scores down again with 17 players breaking par. The leader Scott Stiles retained his lead with a one under 71 to go to 11 under but was now closely pursued by Darren Hupfer at 10 under (65), Neil Thomas at 8 under (65), Antonio Costa at 7 under (70), and Andrew Funk at 6 under (67). At tee time on day 4 it was raining bringing fear that the round might have to be scrubbed as the course was already saturated. Luckily the rain stopped as the leaders playing the 12th hole. The play got very exciting with some back and forth jockeying and finally ended with a tie at the end of 72 holes. Scott Stiles shot an even par 72 and Neil Thomas shot a very fine 69 and was the only player to break 70 this day. Despite being caught, Scott Stiles prevailed with a birdie on the third extra hole. Darren Hupfer finished third with a score of 8 under 280 and Andrew Funk and Antonio Costa tied for fourth at 7 under 281. The three‐man Alberta team wound up being Scott Stiles, Neil Thomas, and Andrew Funk. Darren Hupfer who finished third was already committed to play in Asia at the University Games at the time of the Canadian Amateur and Antonia Costa was ineligible as he was a foreign player. Scott Stiles will also play on the Mid‐amateur team as he had the lowest score for 25 year olds and older. Note: The rules officials were caught by surprise when several players thanked them for keeping play at enjoyable speed. The event was played as straight tee times starting at 7:30 a.m. with the last tee time at 1:21 p.m. The course was in excellent condition until the rain started, continuing for a better part of the day and almost making the course unplayable but for the efforts of the grounds crew. The tournament was played from the Blue tees playing at 6368 yards. The Rules Officials headed by Bruce Petrie, assisted by Court Fortems, Chris Thompson and Peter Boland had their work cut out for them when the rain made some greens impossible to putt. Alberta Interclub Kananaskis GC September 6, 2011 Tournament day began with arrival at the Kananaskis Banquet Centre at 7:00am. The day held great promise for an outstanding day with little or no wind and a cloudless sky. In addition, there was no frost and the start times could proceed as scheduled. Golf carts were in‐place and the driving range was open to all players in a timely manner. Donald was already set‐up for registration and players began to arrive so that check‐in could proceed. Kananaskis staff directed by Lisa Johnson commenced serving breakfast at 8:00am and continued to serve until after everyone had registered and was on the course. Registration proceeded smoothly as Donald had downloaded the handicaps of all players as of the proceeding Friday. A cross‐over start commenced promptly at 9:00am from the #1 and #10 tees of the Mt. Lorette course and continued thereafter with a 9 minute interval between groups. The last tee time was at 11:15am with a gap of one hour before regular patrons were sent out on the course. Following registration and at the direction of Gary, I proceeded to hole #14 to serve as an observer for those players who might hit right and through the fairway into the trees. During this time assistance was rendered to a number of groups in locating their balls, but no gaps in the play were created or observed. A number of contacts with course marshals provided by Kananaskis confirmed that our officials (Gary and Keith) were successful in maintaining the pace of play. Once the first groups started to complete their respective rounds, attention was focused at the Banquet Centre to assist Donald with the scoring. Donald had arranged to display the results on three overhead monitors in the dining area as soon as they had been checked, verified and posted. The BlueGolf software once again proved to be invaluable in tallying the results and ordering the teams by low gross and low net scores. As the end neared, it became evident that a tie for low gross was going to occur. However, the final tally was delayed by a back log of players at the 18th tee. The adverse hole placement at #18 made its play exceedingly slow. At one time it was reported that 4 teams were stacked‐up at the tee. Finally everyone reported in and arrangements were made for a playoff to resolve the tie for low gross. The following is a list of the prize winning teams: LOW NET Country Hills GC 216 Red Deer G&CC 216 Sirocco GC 219 LOW GROSS McCall Lake GC 214 Edmonton Riverside GC 215 Lacombe G&CC 216 Scott Levere, the on‐course manager, was most accommodating as we proceeded to a playoff for low gross. On the first playoff hole, Country Hills prevailed over Red Deer. Meanwhile, we proceeded with supper at 4:30 rather than have those who had already been waiting some 2 hours to wait for the final outcome. An invitation was extended to accompany the two teams and observed the playoff. A number of individuals responded to this invitation. Unfortunately, many who were not in line to win a prize, left as soon as they had eaten leaving a very sparse gathering for the presentations. My recommendations for next year’s tournament are as follows:
1. AGA have input into the hole placement to avoid the delays observed at hole #18.
2. Play all par 5 holes from the back tees to discourage attempts reach the green in two and thereby speed up play.
3. Play the par 4, #5 hole on Mt. Kidd from the back tee to discourage attempts to drive the green and thereby speed up play.
The speed of play is going to be a point of discussion when Kananaskis is approached about booking the 2012 tournament. AGA should be very insistent that the slow play this year was not due to slow play over the course in general, but specific to hole #18 where players were 3 and 4 putting the green because of its adverse hole placement. Our staff comprising Donald, Gary and Keith, did an excellent job again fulfilling their responsibilities. Good people and numerous hands make an undertaking like the Inter‐Club Championship a pleasure to be a participant. I would also like to thank the Staff at Kananaskis, particularly Mike, Scott and Lisa for their outstanding cooperation and cordial attitude in hosting this event. Tournament Chairman Court Fortems
Sun Life Financial Alberta Ladies Amateur Championship Cottonwood Golf & Country Club July 12‐15, 2011 The event was to start off with a Media Day on Monday, July 11; however, the weather did not cooperate. The Media Day draw consisting of Sun Life Financial Advisors Gary Korol, Valorie McManes, Shoaib Syed, Janice Condon, David Bieler and Donna Volden, media staff, Heath Brown CTV, Rod Kelly Calgary Sun, Dean Molberg Fan 960, Andrew Walker Fan 960, Rita Mingo, Calgary Herald, amateur players, members of Alberta Golf staff and volunteers was cancelled due to torrential rain, thunder and lightning. Thank you to Cottonwood GCC volunteers for helping at registration and the cart scorers on day four. The tee gifts of a golf balls and $25.00 Cottonwood GCC gift certificate, compliments of Sun Life Financial, were very much appreciated by the players. Despite the threat of rain, the first round of play on Tuesday, July 12 was a great start to the week. Pre‐tournament favorite, Nicole Zhang, of Silver Springs Golf & CC fired an opening round of 68 with Andrea Kosa of the Glencoe Golf & CC one shot back and Jocelyn Alford of Earl Grey Golf Club in 3rd place with a 2 over 73. However, Mother Nature reared her ugly head causing a two hour rain delay for Day 2. After waiting through the rain delay Zhang shot another 68. Finally on Day 3 the sun was shining all throughout the entire day. Zhang continued to increase her lead to 7 strokes. Sue Hayes of Lakeside Golf & CC pulled off a feat on the par 3 12th hole by hitting a tee shot that went in the hole for the only hole‐in‐one of the tournament. Day 4 came to an end with Nicole Zhang bringing home the big trophy with a closing score of 1 under 70 for a 4 round total of 277. The cooperation of the staff at Cottonwood Golf & CC was exceptional. A special thank you to Tiffany Gordon, CPGA Executive Professional, Gregg Schubert, CPGA Head Professional, office staff and Tyler Patroch, Golf Course Superintendent. Tiffany is a strong leader and had been on top of arrangements from day 1 in May. We can’t thank her enough for her club’s hospitality. The Club succeeded in making this an awesome and memorable tournament, no matter how hard the weather tried to interfere! We had invited as guests to the tournament luncheon on Thursday Lola Rocza and Cathy Simper past presidents of Alberta Ladies Golf, along with Thelma Coutts. Lola spoke to the competitors and her presence was very well received. Thanks to fellow Alberta Golf volunteers Thelma Coutts, Bruce Petrie, Peter Boland, Elan Eisenberg, Lee Misura and Esther Dyck along with staff Jack Lane and Stewart Thibodeau for all their efforts in keeping the tournament on track. Senior Ladies Championship Country Hills Golf & Country Club Jul 25 ‐ 27, 2011 Country Hills Golf & Country Club’s Talons Course lived up to its reputation to provide a tough challenge for the Alberta Senior Ladies during the Senior Ladies Championship held July 25th – 27th, 2011. The course total yardage played 5600 yards, par 72 with the Course and Slope Rating ‐ 73.6/137. The field was a field of 120 Ladies and had a waiting list of an additional 12 women. This is extremely encouraging for women’s golf with that number of participants. And even though the numbers are high it is still important that we continue to encourage all Senior Ladies to participant in this Championship. On the evening of July 24th a rules clinic for the competitors as well as an information session for spotters was held and chaired by Barbara Howes Head Rules Official along with Co‐chair Theresa Stefansson. It was extremely unfortunate that the weather did not cooperate during the tournament. After a great deal of deliberation and a lengthy delay the second round was cancelled reducing the championship to a 36 hole event. Through spurts of sunshine, wind, pouring rain and a weather delay during the final round of the championship Diane Williams of Canyon Meadows Golf & Country Club was declared the Senior Ladies Provincial Champion for the eighth time in her career and was also declared the Super Senior Ladies Provincial Champion with a two round total of 154. Additionally the Overall Low Net Champion was Karen Saunders of Maple Ridge Golf Club with a total net score of 143. The top Senior Ladies of the Championship were as follows: Diane Williams Canyon Meadows Golf & CC 154 Karen Pultz Peace Portal Golf & CC (BC) 156 Joyce Trapp Calgary Golf & CC 157 Claire Mitton Country Hills Golf & CC 158 Jackie Little British Columbia Golf Group 158 Linda Palahniuk Kelowna Golf & CC 158 Nancy Chow Mayfair Lakes Golf Club 159 Gaylene Donald Silver Springs Golf & CC 159 Karen Saunders Maple Ridge Golf Club 159 Phyllis Laschuk Point Grey Golf & CC 159 Marilyn O’Connor Elks Golf Club of Calgary 159 The 2011 Alberta Ladies Senior Inter‐provincial Team was also declared. The following Ladies will be representing Team Alberta: Diane Williams Canyon Meadows Golf & CC Joyce Trapp Calgary Golf & CC Claire Mitton Country Hills Golf & CC Team Alberta will compete at the Royale National Women’s Senior Championship at Whitevale Golf Club in Whitevale, Ontario on August 22nd to 25th. Thank you to Theresa Stefansson Country Hills Golf & CC member for Co‐Chairing the tournament and for organizing the Country Hills Members, who volunteered their time to be spotters, though out the 2 days. Theresa was outstanding and was an informative and very helpful liaison between the Club and the AGA volunteers. Congratulations to Country Hills Golf & Country Club and its members for being the host venue for the 2011 Provincial Senior Ladies Championship. The Greens Superintendent and his staff ensured that the course was in exceptional playing condition. Much thanks to Country Hills for generously offering their practice facilities to all of the competitors. The competitors found Country Hills a golf course that was in tournament shape and a challenge to their golf games. Much thanks to Brett Burgeson Head Professional and his staff as well as Brent Syme General Manager and Todd Bell Food and Beverage Manager and his staff.
A final note the Championship was a success not only because of the competitors and the Country Hills Golf & Country Club and staff but because of the great support and commitment from the Alberta Golf Directors, Barbara Howes Head Rules Official and her great team of officials Dave Peterson, Adrian Feregotto, and Gary Selman, starter and scorer Derek Norman and volunteer scorer John Craig and Alberta Golf Staff, Jack Lane. A huge thank you to the Bridges at Claresholm Golf Club for so generously allowing us the privilege of playing the South Zone Ladies Classic at their facility. Thanks to Head Professional Lyle Broderson and his staff for showing such patience when we changed the tee times from a shotgun to straight times; for having the carts ready to go and being available to help us muddle through some of the problems that always arise. Thank you to Superintendent Rod Andrews and his staff for having the course ready, Catering Manager Bryan McEloy and Chef Darren for cooking on such a hot day. And last but not least, thanks to our Rules officials Thelma Coutts and Bette Flannigan and staff member Donald Stewart. What a great group of people to work with. There were negative comments regarding the format used on Day 1. The suggestion was to return to the 4‐ball format. Ladies Team Classic North Camrose Golf Club August 22 – 23, 2011 The Ladies Team Classic North was hosted by the Camrose Golf Club on August 22 and 23. There were some organizational problems prior to the tournament, most can be attributed to the departure of the Tournament Chair right at the time were most of the tournament coordination would have taken place. Bill Penny and his staff at Camrose and Lori and Jack and the rest of the Golf House staff were able to pull everything together in time to get the tournament off without any major glitches. Darren McDermott and his grounds crew had the course in great condition and the weather was great. There were some issues that arose over the change in format, from the old zone 4 ball to the new Team Classic. Perhaps we could have done a better job on stressing that this was a new tournament with a new format, although most of the competitors were aware of the change. There were also some issues with course set up and course design that caused some problems in Camrose on day two. There were two holes that required a carry over water/ reeds in excess of 50 yards and the format required two scores from each team on day two. In hindsight we should have had drop areas in place for the players who were unable to carry that distance. Despite the few issues the majority of the Ladies expressed nothing but good things about the course and the tournament. I think now that we have introduced the new format and the players have experienced it should run very well next year with no need for any format change. Alberta Junior Boys Qualifying ‐ Calgary Wintergreen Golf & Country Club June 26, 2011 The Calgary Junior Qualifier was held on June 26 as a crossover on a day that was sunny and warm. The field of 90 players was treated to a golf course in great condition considering the heavy rains that hit the region. Director of Golf Walter Blackstaffe, Head Pro Tom Day, Superintendent Alf Beaudry and staff were cooperative, supportive and a pleasure to deal with. Aaron Crawford from Pinebrook was the low round of the day at 68 (‐4). A total of 65 boys qualified for the Provincial Championship with the last spot decided in a playoff. The event ran a little behind schedule due to public players being inserted into the crossover. Frank Lindsay Alberta Junior/Juvenile Boys Championship Drayton Valley G&CC July 5 – 8, 2011 This year’s Championship was hosted by the Drayton Valley G&CC. A special thanks to their membership for the use of this fine facility. After days of rain the course was in playable condition, thanks to the Superintendent and his assistants. The weather co‐operated for the first three days with sunshine and light winds. The last day was cancelled due to heavy rains that made the course unplayable. Thinking that the weather would be ok, we started play at 7 am but had to blow the horn at 11:00 after five groups were in. It was unfortunate because the leaders had become closely bunched and it looked to be a close finish. Wilson Bateman was the Junior Champion and Matt Williams the Juvenile Champion. Taking low gross score for the under 15 was Aj Armstrong , age 16 – Ian Mmbando, age 17 – Emmett Oh, age 18 – Riley Fleming. The Junior boys teams selected were: Inter‐Provincial –Wilson Bateman, Emmett Oh & Riley Fleming; Junior America’s Cup – Tyler Saunders, Matt Williams, Brett Hogan & Derek Rucki; Ryder Cup – Austin Laidlaw, Mikkel Holt, Nick Scrymgeour, Evan Holmes, Jason Martens & Scott McNichol The top 10 scores: Wilson Bateman Blackhawk Golf Club ‐5 Emmett Oh Bearspaw Country Club ‐3 Riley Fleming Collicutt Siding Golf Club ‐1 Cole Chelle Derrick Golf & Winter Club +3 Austin Cruikshank Country Hills Golf Club +5 Matt Williams Pinebrook G&CC +9 Brett Hogan Willow Park Golf Course +11 Travis Miller Willow Park Golf Course +12 Aj Armstrong Sturgeon Valley G&CC +12 Ian Mmbando Henderson Lake G&CC +12 Graeme Kreiner, head Professional, and his staff were perfect hosts, assisted in all aspects of the tournament and treated the competitors and AGA volunteers very well. Alberta Girls Junior Championship Canmore Golf & Curling Club July 4‐7, 2011 What a difference a year makes…. From rain, unplayable conditions and a single 18 hole tournament in 2010 to 4 glorious days of warm weather, a playoff and some great scoring in 2011. The Canmore Golf and Curling Club, celebrating their 85th year, welcomed our 45 girls in great style. Registration and a player’s meeting were held Sunday evening following practice rounds and were well attended. A bag of goodies prepared by the volunteers and staff of the club greeted the girls when they arrived. Many hands make light work was the motto for this tournament. Director of Golf Darren Cooke and his staff and volunteers bent over backwards to ensure that this event was first class…. and it was! Each day at the practice range, the girls were greeted by volunteers who assigned the players a practice stall with their own special identification sign which they were able to take home as a souvenir. After play the girls were either treated to cool cloths, refreshments, chocolate covered strawberries or a combination of these goodies! The buffet luncheon included a spread of culinary items that appealed to all in attendance. Food and Beverage Manager Dave Jones ensured that all participants were well taken care of. Head Superintendant Reid Solodan worked closely with Al Qually to set the course and was accommodating and a pleasure to work with. Our thanks go out to Darren Cooke, Dave Jones, Rick Eichle and Reid Solodan, the Pro Shop, Food and Beverage and Maintenance Staff and the many Canmore Golf and Curling Club Volunteers that ensured a successful event! All 4 days dawned clear and warm with ideal playing conditions. Much effort was put forth by Al Qually and his team to ensure a fair yet challenging layout and the girls responded. The top 4 players shot 6 rounds of par or better over the 4 days with Jennifer Ha coming out on top with an aggregate score of ‐6 for a total of 282 ‐ a full 18 shots ahead of the nearest competitor. The excitement continued on Day 4 when a playoff between Megan Paul and Becky Martin was required to determine the 3rd spot for the Inter‐Provincial Team to be sponsored to Nationals. Becky was steady on the first playoff hole to successfully defeat Megan and earned the final spot. Alberta Bantam Championship Nanton Golf and Country Club August 23rd – 24th, 2011 The 2011 Bantam Championship was conducted at the Nanton Golf and Country Club. The course was in great shape, the staff and members were very accommodating for our group from start to finish. In the girls division Jaclyn Lee of Valley Ridge walked away with the title carding rounds of 72 and 75. Bria Jansen of River Spirit was close on her heals with rounds of 77 and 78. Patrick Murphy of Collicutt Siding played great golf over two days shooting rounds of 72 and 69 to win by three over Brett Pasula of the Red Deer CC. Again this was a very strong group of Bantam golfers who look to lead the province in competitive golf over the next 4-5 years!

McLennan Ross Sun Junior Golf Tour We have just concluded the 16th year for the McLennan Ross Sun Junior Golf Tour. The Tour’s success has been made possible by the loyal and substantial support of our Corporate Partners and for that support, we are most appreciative. Tens of thousands of young Albertans have been able to hone their games at many of Alberta’s top golf courses in an environment that has helped teach these kids many life skills and attitudes that will hopefully stay with them their entire lives. While the overall number of juniors competing in junior golf in Alberta has declined somewhat in recent years, we have been able to maintain a solid schedule of tournaments to provide these youngsters competitive opportunities. Huge thanks must also be extended to the host sites for the tournaments. Clubs provide their golf course for the betterment of junior golf free of charge, and we really need to thank the owners, managers, club professionals and their staffs that free up their golf courses to help grow the game. The players have the chance to form some terrific friendships with their peers and they quickly learn the difference between casual play with their buddies and having to handle the pressure when they’re in contention. The Tour has also been a very good training ground for Alberta Golf rules officials looking to get valuable experience at tournaments. We want to express our sincere appreciation to those men and women who have lent their expertise and professionalism to the Tour. The Tour Championship at Wolf Creek on August 29th was an outstanding event. Tyler Saunders of the Glendale put an exclamation point on an outstanding summer by going ‘back to back’, following up his 2010 Tour Championship with a successful defence of his title. Saunders’ 2‐under par 68 was the 2nd‐lowest round in Tour Championship history, second only to Ryan Swelin’s 66 in 2002. Cara Vanderham of Innisfail won the Junior Girls’ championship on the first hole of a sudden‐victory playoff over up and coming Carolyn Lee of Valley Ridge in Calgary in what might have been Vanderham’s final junior golf event. Congratulations and thanks to all the competitors who entered our events this year. Dunc Mills Executive Director The McLennan Ross Sun Junior Golf Tour, Presented by Mackay.ca

2011 CN Future Links Report Alberta Golf worked hard to conduct a smooth and successful CN Future Links Program and distribute materials and equipment to program sites. Alberta Golf continued to promote the program using the sponsor vehicle, website, press releases, teacher’s conventions and other publications. This year CN was again the title sponsor for the Future Links Program along with the Ford Motor Company and ClubLink Corporation who continue to be the official suppliers. The Future Links School program for 2011 was again very successful in Physical Education Programs in schools throughout the province of Alberta and was based on numbers from September 2010 – September 2011 that didn’t register for the NGIS Program. There are now 145 schools that have joined the National Golf in Schools Program which focuses on grades 1‐6. The Future Links Programming at the clubs was also successful however many of the clubs that registered did not become active sites this season. I thought that the junior workshop at Country Hills would have been a great opportunity to promote the program, everyone left feeling positive about the program however it seems like the momentum was lost a little. The U 18 Program was again very well received – There were three major camps conducted across the province for this age group. Team Alberta ‐ Alberta’s top competitors were involved in year round training which was a major priority was for our player development committee. Kids Club Connection Depot ‐ Alberta continues to receive donated clubs and balls from courses across Alberta to distribute to schools and recreation departments holding programs. There is always a great demand for equipment such as putters and short irons. Many thanks to all of the golf professionals, teachers, volunteers, AG directors, RCGA staff, CN as the title sponsor and other contributing sponsors in making our junior programs from beginner to the elite level this year such a great success. 2011 Alberta Order of Merit The Provincial Orders of Merit are used to identify and give recognition to top performing amateur and junior golfers across Alberta who have achieved success in the golf season. The Order of Merit is based on those tournaments that represent an extremely high standard of competition. A point system is used based on the scores and results of the players in the approved tournaments in order to objectively rank each individuals performance. The objective of the Order of Merit is to provide a provincial comparison/ranking system for Alberta’s top junior/amateur players which will enable players to compare themselves to their counter parts across the country. Alberta Golf Report Women and Junior Girls 2011 General Overall, it was a strong year for Alberta’s female golfers. The training camps in the winter at the Edge, Kamloops and Arbutus Ridge were excellent for both getting the players together and for giving quality time for players and coaches. The camaraderie at all events also allowed all players to be comfortable, made for great team events throughout the year, and especially for the girls as they were comfortable at coed events. We fared far better this year in National Junior championships and with the squad of junior girls we have, the next few years will be competitive and therefore exciting. Highlights The Junior Americas Cup in Reno, Nevada saw some outstanding performances and an excellent team environment from the junior girls. All players contributed to a fine top 10 showing. The National Junior was also excellent, held in Quilchena, some excellent performances notably Jennifer Ha and Kat Kennedy had strong showings and both Carolyn and Jaclyn Lee made the cut. The provincial junior in Canmore produced a run‐ away winner in Jennifer Ha and the emergence of Mieke Heyns was an added bonus. The event was first class with the weather and the golf course very playable and accommodating for the girls. The Alberta and Montana Ryder Cup was held in Lethbridge with some great team performances and a win for the junior girls. Recommendations The training camps need to happen a little more regularly throughout the winter, this is the time of year that changes can and will take place. It is too difficult for the players to make and enforce swing and short game changes in April and beyond. April through and including September should be for maintenance, checkups, and tactical and fundamental corrections at events and preparing players to compete. A warm practice facility such as Phoenix, San Antonio, Palm Springs should be included to the program, such as Puerto Rico this year, which should guarantee that players can practice and work out in ideal conditions. Each player should invite their teacher, coach to some training situations in Calgary this winter. The Ladies program needs to be revamped. It was poorly attended last year and the results somewhat showed this time around. We need to have a better college/women camp schedule so that university players and on have some link to coaching and the sport sciences. Goals, fitness and better follow up for Team Alberta needs to be done in 2012. Summary The future looks great for Alberta Junior girl’s golf. We have the potential for 10 – 12 Alberta junior girls from 14 – 16 to be very competitive over the next few years. We need to keep this momentum going, involve their own coaches and teachers throughout the winter and make some differences to these players. The camps and the matches are huge for player development and improvement and the more opportunities to practice and play with better players we should actively seek and welcome these. It is an exciting time for Alberta juniors and we need to keep accurate tracking of all players and potential players. The more players involved the better the transition into teams and training camps. A solid year, and the goal should be to ensure that each team Alberta enters is very competitive and for Alberta to be the bench mark in training and player development. Dean Spriddle Provincial Coach, Alberta Golf
Team Alberta Report – Junior Boys Team Winter 2011 The Team Alberta program for 2011 was planned out to give the top Alberta junior golfers an advantage at the Canadian Junior Championships in August 2011. The process began in January with an orientation day that consisted of fitness testing, nutrition and data collection using the Flightscope launch monitor. It was a chance to go through the entire Team Alberta program with the players and for them to get to know one another. The facilities at the Edge School worked well for what was planned. Spring 2011 There were a couple days planned for the team members to get together in the spring at Heritage Pointe and the RCGA Centre, but the weather didn’t cooperate and these training sessions were cancelled. The bulk of the 2011 Team Alberta program revolved around the May trip to BC where the players were able to play a practice round at Morgan Creek GC, host of the 2011 Canadian Junior Boys, and participate in the Future Links event at Arbutus Ridge GC north of Victoria. This idea of getting the top players together in the spring to play in one of the national junior events has been very successful over the years. It gives the players something to prepare for and allows them to be part of a true team environment for a week early in the golf season. We were able to play a couple practice rounds and observe the golf over two days of competition. Unfortunately the third round of the event was cancelled due to rain and unplayable conditions. Practice sessions at the golf course, meetings at the hotel and team dinners were highlights of this trip. Summer 2011 The members of Team Alberta were given a special access membership to Heritage Pointe GC where they were able to practice and play in non‐peak times. They also had access to the RCGA Golf Centre and discounts on Titleist equipment. June and July the players competed in events around the province and continued to prepare for the Canadian Junior. Players were observed on the course at the provincial junior and feedback was shared when the opportunity arose. Most of the players felt quite comfortable talking about their rounds, tournaments and plans whenever we met with them. Canadian Junior 2011 We had some success at the Canadian Junior in August, as well as a bit of a let down. Our Alberta players were on fire the first couple days but just couldn’t finish it off over the final two rounds after the cut. This is something we have seen at past National Junior events and should be discussed during the off‐season. RCGA Order of Merit The members of Team Alberta performed well throughout the year and were able to take advantage of a more favourable summer tournament schedule resulting in a total of 9 Alberta juniors finishing in the top 30 on the Golf Canada Junior order of merit. Five of the nine players on Team Alberta were part of that top 30 group – Riley Fleming (8); Matt Williams (13); Tyler Saunders (14); Austin Cruickshank (17); and Brett Hogan (30). Derek Rucki (49) and Jack Wood (61) cracked the top 100. Andy Ritchot (135) and Scott Secord (184) also were part of the program. Recommendations for 2012 An earlier start is needed to get the members of Team Alberta 2012 tested. We need to help them understand what their strengths and weaknesses are in the area of fitness and nutrition and what a program to improve these areas might look like. Monthly sessions with our resources will give them a sense of how important this is. This is usually the
time of year when tournament schedules are discussed and recommendations made to the juniors as there are a ton of options out there. The parents are starting to put more trust in our suggestions based on what we’ve seen in the past. As the Canadian Junior will be held in Nova Scotia in August 2012, a trip to play the venue doesn’t make sense this year. There are many benefits of a spring camp and tournament for the players. Perhaps locating a US event on the AJGA, or one of their winter tours would allow the players to travel together and prepare for the summer schedule. We need to continue our strong relationship with Heritage Pointe as the practice facility is important for our training sessions. It would be beneficial to schedule regular team meetings at Heritage throughout the spring leading up to the provincial junior. The RCGA Centre and the deal with Titleist give the players extra benefits as well. We should continue supporting this group, as well as the 3‐man team at the Canadian Junior. A scheduled provincial meeting for those players who make the cut might help our day 3 and 4 scores at the national junior. We have five of the nine players from our 2011 team returning to join newcomers Aaron Crawford, Emmett Oh and Nic Scrymgeour. It will be an experienced group and should be an exciting year. I look forward to being a part of the process. Randy Robb Alberta Men’s Provincial Coach
Player Development Captain North Zone Report
After returning home from the Annual General Meeting, downloaded the respective manual relating to the Northern Zone Player Development responsibilities and other duties relating to tournaments (Junior Qualifier and Amateur men’s) it was off to the Zone Meeting in Barrhead. I left at 6:15 A.M. on the 24th May, Donald Stewart and Troy Sudaby had left the day before. Unfortunately, no one from the other clubs arrived for the meeting. We discussed what was happening in the zone. Reviewed presentation package and had lunch.
I took the Alberta Golf material for the following clubs: (Posters and Golf related materials)
Mayerthorpe Golf & Country Club and spoken with Rhonda. They have approximately 90 members at present. The season average is 130 members with junior lessons starting in 1st/2nd week in June.
The next stop was Whitecourt to visit with Jaron Higgins the assistant professional Brandon Regnier, Head Professional. They have approximately 300 members up this year from 2010 with about 90 juniors. Their Pro shop is well stocked and they offer Golf Town Rates on all merchandise. I delivered the 50 year plaque and provided information on Scholarships and other golf material and posters.
Visited Siler Birch Golf Course in Fox Creek. All new staff, Angela Bellwood, manager, reported that they had just started up and she could not provide much detail. Golf posters and material left with her. Mostly a recreational golf course with tournaments etc.
Stopped at Riverside Golf Course, Valley view. Just getting started, and spoke with Brayden Dunn. Dropped off posters and golf materials. On to Green view Golf Resort, under new ownership, mostly recreational golfers but they do have some Juniors to participate in Junior tournaments.
Visited Morningview and the Dunes Golf & Winter Club as well as. Morning view Park is a lot of summer campers; however both the Dunes and Mournivew Park have great Junior Programs. They are extremely interested in becoming involved with the Junior “Tour” North. We would create this program to give juniors and opportunity to participate at various courses in the Peace Country and pay a very nominal fee.
Met with several Ladies’ from the Grande Prairie Golf & Country Club and encouraged them to participate in the Marg Ward/Mid Amateur championship. (Seven from Grande Prairie and one from the Dunes participated).
Contacted all of the schools in the area to ascertain how their equipment was working and how they enjoyed the Golf In Schools program. Some don’t have enough equipment and would like to purchase more,. I have one sponsor for Swanavon School
Prior to the Grande Prairie Junior Open promoted an Advanced Junior Clinic. Attended by 18 juniors (boys & girls) with four instructors. Great day and the juniors really enjoyed the experience. The City of Grande Prairie provided some funding for this clinic.
Plans are being formulated for a Junior Golf camp and instruction in the spring, to go along with Junior “Tour” North. We definitely need some assistance from Alberta Golf. (i.e. $3,000.00/$5,000.00). Kept very close contact with Troy, Bill and Ken. Great team.

2011 Central Zone Player Development Report
The golf season got off to a slow start for zone 3 as I am sure it did for all of Alberta. I was not able to secure venues for my Future Links camps. It was a bad start for all the clubs this year with the weather being so ugly. Some were short staffed and others were just that far behind. When the weather at last did an about turn it seemed most clubs wer
The golf was started with the Alberta Open in which our zone 3 Mitch Evanecz from Red Deer lost in a playoff and Brett McNallie from Drayton made top 20 with a tie for 18 place.
At the provincial level zone 3 had some very good results as the men’s mid‐amateur was won by Frank Van Dornick from Camrose. Others who made it into the top 20 were Tom Skinner from Red Deer T‐10, Tim Boston from Wolf Creek T‐13 and Greg Gigliuk T‐16.
For the ladies the mid Marg Ward started the season off with Mona Stock T‐16 and Berni Kuntz T‐19.
Zone 3 only had 3 entries in the provincial girls with Katie Griffiths of Red Deer finishinf T‐20. In the boys tournament zone 3 had seventeen young men who competed with Riley Flemming of Collicutt Siding finishing third. Unfortunately the boys were only able to complete three rounds because of inclement weather.
On the men’s and ladies’ amateur side the men certainly out numbered the ladies as we only had on enter the ladies but on the men’s side we had fourteen. Zone 3 had some pretty good results with Carson Kallis of Red Deer T‐8, Frank Van Dornick of Camrose T‐12 and Jordan Krulicki of Red Deer T‐17.
In the senior category 9 ladies attended Provincials with Lynn Kuehn from Lacombe 13, Cathy Mcmillan from Ponoka T‐15,Sharon Peart from Red Deer T‐17 and Jeannie Tiffin from Red Deer T‐19. On the men’s side 10 attended provincials with –who else—Frank Van Dornick T‐3, Merv Dusik and Tom Skinner from Red Deer T‐10.
The ladies Team Classic North had quiet a few entries‐42 in all. Results did not indicate their clubs so I was not able to determine who entered from our zone.
The Bantam championship was attended by 5 young men and no gals. Patrick Murphy was the winner from Collicutt Siding with Brett Pasula of Red Deer second and Andrew Harrison of Camrose fifth. Patrick also represented Alberta at the WCSG and finished with a team silver and fifth place in the individual. The closing tournament for Alberta Golf was the men’s mid handicap with 2‐ men competing. Joseph Gourlay from Sundre T‐17.
At the National level the number of participants from the zones seems to dwindle as it is rather costly to attend on your own. Zone 3 had no junior male or female attend. On the amateur side no ladies competed and only 2 men, none of which reached top 20. At the Canadian Senior Ladies we had two ladies attend with no top 20’s and at the men’s 3 competed with Frank Van Dornick finishing 7 and Tom Skinner T‐11. Two golfers from Zone 3 attended the last Golf Canada tournament –men’s mid amateur‐ with no top 20’s.
The tournament schedule has come to a close for another year and all golfers representing Zone 3 should be congratulated for all their time put in to be the best that they can be.
Respectively submitted

Inter Provincial Team Report In 2011 we had some great results on the national stage however this year marked the first time that the inter provincial teams were downsized to three players and we did not have the support from team captains as in the past. However, the teams were selected from our provincial championships and did receive financial support to attend the national event representing our province. Overall we had some very successful results, notably the Inter Provincial Boys Team capturing the title for the first time since 2003, while the girl’s team and the senior men’s team both finished in the runner up position. Girls’ Junior Americas Cup Genoa Lakes Golf Club, Nevada July 25‐28, 2011 The Girls Junior Americas Cup Matches is an international junior golf competition that began in 1978. It brings together girls from the western regions of Canada, the USA and Mexico to cultivate new friendship and mutual respect. It was designed to promote an understanding of each region’s history and customs and to foster learning about the different cultures while demonstrating that we are more alike than different. It develops a pride in self, team, province/state and country. The 72 competitors consist of the top 4 girls (17 years of age and under) from Alberta, B.C., Mexico and 15 US golf associations representing 12 western US states. Each team’s region hosts the event every 18 years. The Alberta Team of Jennifer Ha, Christie Lin, Kat Kennedy and Kristen Lee was determined based on results in the 2010 Provincial and National Championships. This year the event was hosted by the Genoa Lakes Golf Club in Genoa Lakes, Nevada and all girls were housed by host families that lived on the course. The competition is the only stroke play international event that our Juniors participate in and is one that all girls aspire to play! Nevada in the summer is warm in the daytime and cool at nights and we were greeted with exactly that ‐ 6 days of clear, sunny and very warm dry weather. There are many annual traditions that are upheld each year that include Opening Ceremonies, Flag Raising, Banquet and Guest Speaker, Host Family Interaction and Closing Ceremonies. All of these events this year were well organized, entertaining and enjoyable. The girls were very fortunate to be able to listen to great advice and a very heartfelt message from Patty Sheehan, Member of the World Golf Hall of Fame and former GJAC player. Patty Sheehan: "I never thought of myself as anything less than a winner. To be successful, you need drive, determination and a belief in yourself, and some kind of peacefulness about what you're doing." Following the official ceremonies, it was down to ‘business’ with Coach Dean Spriddle working with the girls on the range and short game facilities. His interaction with the team and assistance on course was invaluable. The course was in great condition, fairly wide open yet provided the girls with a few challenges. After Day 1, the team ranked 7th, after Day 2, T8th and finished with a 10th place finish which met one of our goals to place in the top 10. It was a pleasure to watch our junior girls represent themselves and the Alberta Golf Association in this tournament and to interact with and support each other– they did so with respect and courtesy. 39th Annual Junior America’s Cup Hiwan Golf Club, Evergreen, Colorado July 27‐29, 2011 The Junior America’s Cup first started in 1959. It originally started as matches between the Mexican, Alberta and Southern California Junior Golf Associations; and in 1973 a decision was made that would see it expand and include an additional 14 Junior Golf Associations. Today, the International field consists of 68 Junior Boys representing Alberta, British Columbia, Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Mexico, Montana, Nevada, Northern California, Oregon, San Diego, Southern California, Sun Country, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. Team Alberta for 2011 consisted of Matt Williams, Derek Rucki, Tyler Saunders and Brett Hogan, and was chosen based upon the players’ results in the 2010 Provincial and National Championships. The team was accompanied by coach Kent Fukushima, who plays on the Canadian Tour and continues his pursuit of playing on the PGA Tour. This year’s event was hosted by the Hiwan Golf Club in Evergreen, Colorado and the boys were housed by host families that lived on or around the course. Past notable participants in the JAC tournament include alumni such as Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Corey Pavin, Fred Couples and many other notables. It was a great honor for this year’s boys to play in a tournament that has seen so many former participants go on to becoming successful Tour players. The weather, at most times cooperated – with a few morning and evening showers scattered throughout the week. It was hot and humid and the course was in fantastic shape. The greens were from what I heard, the fastest the boys had played in official competition. The team worked enthusiastically with Kent during the practice rounds to ensure that they were ready for the challenging greens and pin positions during the competition. Great fun was had by all, and at times the boys wanted to continue practicing late into the night. Annual traditions of the tournament include the Opening Ceremonies, Flag Raising, Formal Opening Banquet and Guest Speaker – who this year was Ralph Green, a member of the USA Disabled Ski Team, and the Closing Ceremonies. The boys enjoyed the motivational speech by Ralph, and I am sure will never forget his words of encouragement, his story about the “yard sale”, his determination to never give up, be the best at whatever you do and his message about “don’t be afraid to be different”. The boys finished 8th overall and met their goal of finishing in the top 10. It was fantastic to have such an outstanding team of young men represent Alberta with such pride. The interaction together, with Coach Kent and the host families that accommodated them should make us all proud of what our Junior programs have accomplished. North Zone Report The North Zone is composed of a relatively new group of volunteers that stepped up and contributed significant time and energy towards marketing the benefits and services of Alberta Golf and maintaining a very professional presence during all the 2011 functions held in the north. A special thanks goes to Bill Skinner for continuing to offer impeccable guidance during this season. The season started off cold and wet but improved dramatically as the summer passed by. Troy Suddaby, Perky McCullough, and Bill Skinner visited Fox Haven, Lakeside, Debolt, Chinook Valley, Heart River, Trestle Creek, Riverstone, Morningview, Spruce Meadows, Whitecourt, Fox Creek, Valleyview, Riverstone, and Greenview this summer. Morningview, Spruce Meadows and Trestle Creek will be joining Alberta Golf in the near future. There were three very successful tournaments held in the North Zone this year:
• Junior Qualifier was held at the Dunes Golf and Country Club o The volunteers from the North Zone that supported this event were: Bill
Skinner, Troy Suddaby, Tim Meyer, Perky McCullough
• Marg Ward Ladies Mid Handicap was held at the Jasper Park Lodge GC o The volunteers from the North Zone that supported this event were: Troy Suddaby, Tim
Meyer
• Men's Amateur Qualifier was held at the Grande Prairie Golf and Country Club o The volunteers from the North Zone that supported this event were: Bill Skinner, Troy
Suddaby, Tim Meyer, Perky McCullough, Ken Lyle All three events were well attended and managed in a very professional manner. Thanks again to all the volunteers for contributing timeless energy. The highlight of the summer for Troy Suddaby and myself, Ken Lyle, was travelling to Yellowknife to rate their golf course. This course is very unique because the fairways consist of sand (no grass) with Jack Pine defining the borders of the fairways. The tee boxes and greens are built with artificial turf. The members and visitors pack a small piece of artificial turf with them to support the ball when playing their fairway shots. A special thanks goes to Sylvia Blasken for assisting in evaluating this unique course. We updated the Bear Creek Golf Club course rating late in the season. They added a significant number of Ladies tee boxes and fairway bunkers and wanted to have the new ratings for the 2012 season. Joanne Smith will be joining the volunteer group next year, taking over Troy Suddaby's role as North Zone Member Club Liaison. Thanks again to all the hard work the volunteers provided and I am looking forward to another successful year in 2012. Ken Lyle North Zone Council Chair
Edmonton Zone Report
The season started with our Zone Member Club Spring Meeting which was hosted by the Edmonton Country Club on May 4th. Attendance was very poor, despite a lot of follow‐up communication to the clubs. Attendees were brought up to date on all of the programs and services provided to them as members of Alberta Golf. Bob McGinn and his team are developing strategies to improve the communications with member clubs.
Edmonton zone hosted 11 AGA tournaments days. Rules officials from the zone volunteered at a number of “outside” events, including a qualifier for the Syncrude Boreal Open, three Edmonton Golf Association championship events, the Alberta High School Championships, and McLennan Ross Sun Junior Tour events. Herb Schlotter, zone Rules captain, also organized three rules clinics. Again this year, we have seen a need for better coordination with the EGA so that both the EGA and our officials understand, and agree on, what is expected.
The zone course rating team, led by Borden Woytkiw, completed the rating of 8 courses this season.
A big thank you goes out to all volunteers in the zone. It’s because of your efforts that we have had another successful year!

Edmonton Zone Chair
Central Zone Report
The Central Zone had another very successful golf season. Thank you to all of the directors, volunteers, member clubs, golfers and Alberta Golf staff for making this possible.
The season started with a Handicap Seminar hosted by Donald and Jack from golf House prior to our annual Central Zone meeting this year graciously hosted by the Olds Central Highlands Golf Club and organized by Joan and Al Qually. Head pro and GM Wade Bearchell was most accommodating providing attendees with a private room to meet, coffee and amenities and a complimentary “Nine and Dine” which was much appreciated. The Handicap Seminar was well attended by many Central Zone Clubs some of whom also attended the Zone meeting.
The Central Zone member clubs, as usual, hosted many Alberta Golf tournaments in 2011. These included: The Junior Boys Championship hosted by the Drayton Valley Golf Club, Alberta Open Qualifying hosted by the Olds Central Highlands Golf Club, Alberta Amateur Qualifying tournaments hosted by Olds Central Highlands and Drayton Valley Golf Clubs, Men’s Senior Championship hosted by the Coyote Creek Golf Club, the Ladies Team Classic hosted by the Camrose Golf Club, and the RCGA CN Future Links Western Championship hosted by Wolf Creek Golf Course. Thanks again to all of the directors, volunteers, members and staff at these clubs for helping to make these events so successful.
Tournament Chairs, Rules officials and Starters/Scorers in the Central Zone were especially busy this year. The Central Zone is blessed with a large number of highly qualified officials who work many tournaments throughout Alberta. Officials from the Central Zone who worked tournaments include: Jack Brooks, Chair of many events, Peter Davies, Head Rules Official, Al Qually, Head Rules Official, Joan Qually, Chair and Rules Official, Les Swelin, Head Rules Official, Tom Zariski, Head Rules Official, Wendy Davies, Rules Official, Lois Gilbertson, Chair. Special thanks to golf House staff Lori Evans, Jack Lane, Donald Stewart and Matt Rollins for their exceptional expertise in making everything at these tournaments run smoothly for the volunteers.
Club visitations was not a high priority this year with a minimal number of clubs being visited, many informally. We encouraged Alberta Golf volunteers to drop in to clubs and introduce themselves as Alberta golf volunteers to touch base with clubs that may not have seen anyone from Alberta golf in a while. We also encouraged member clubs to regularly view the AG website for updates.
Slope ratings were carried out at Dinosaur Trail and Pheasantback courses. Combined tee rating at Pine Hills. Course raters were Jack Brooks, Lois Gilbertson, Dave Brosteaux and Herb Draney. The most interesting had to be the Dinosaur Trail Golf and Country Club rating of their back nine holes. The very unique design and topography stumped the course rater’s formulas for calculations on occasion.
Again a big thank you to all of the volunteers, rules officials, course raters, and Alberta golf staff for all of your hard work in 2011. We look forward to an even better year in 2012!
Tom Zariski Central Zone Council Chair
South Zone Report It was another busy and enjoyable season for the volunteers in the south zone. The season started with our Annual South Zone Member Club Spring Meeting which was hosted by the gracious staff at the Nanton Golf Club on April 26th. There were approx 40 people in attendance representing 12 clubs from the zone. Attendees were brought up to date on all of the programs and services provided to them as members of the Alberta Golf Association. Despite a cold, windy, and rainy start to this year’s golf season, Bette Flannigan South Zone Rules Captain, organized 6 rules clinics at member clubs in the zone. Another eight clubs were also contacted regarding possible rules clinics in the future. The south zone also hosted 4 AGA amateur tournaments as well as two college events this season. Alberta Golf staff and zone volunteers organize the AGA tournaments and provide rules expertise for the competitors. The new south zone course rating team lead by Jeff Motherwell, completed its schedule for 2011 with the rating of 4 courses and a partial rating of one course. They rated The Bridges at Claresholm, Cottonwood Coulee Golf Club, Waterton Lakes Golf Club, and Crowsnest Pass Golf & CC and 3 holes of the Lethbridge Country Club.
Thelma Coutts has been busy officiating, visiting numerous golf clubs researching the history of Alberta Golf for the centennial magazine and, helping out with AGA scholarship selections. A big thank you goes out to all volunteers in the zone. It’s because of your efforts that were able to grow the participation and passion for the game in southern Alberta. Gene Oleksin South Zone Council Chair
Executive Director’s Report
Alberta Golf’s mission statement is to grow participation and passion for golf while upholding the integrity and traditions of the game. Our operational theme this year was to continue to grow the game and instil the passion that we as an organization have for golf; and in reviewing the year we could celebrate many new milestones.
Perhaps the most important growth factor for golf is spreading the game at the grassroots level. The National Golf in Schools program is designed to achieve this objective and this year we were excited to join forces with the PGA of Alberta to expand on this initiative. In 2011 we reached a record of 145 schools in the province along with 33 of them being adopted for support by clubs and individuals. We have also developed a strong relationship with the Physical Education Specialists in the province which will go a long way to improving our promotional opportunities.
In addition to the National Golf in Schools program our CN Future Links initiative continues its strong growth pattern with a number of clubs running the various programs that are offered from skills competitions and golf leagues to the learn to play program. A nice membership growth area for Alberta Golf was in our Public Player’s Club. This year we celebrated the registration of 1625 members, a 25% increase over 2010. With a renewal rate of nearly 66%, our members continue to see value in their PPC membership. Promotion of the 2012 program will begin late 2011 with 2012 memberships being available in January 2012. As trends show a shift away from golfers buying memberships in favour of playing at public oriented facilities, this membership category will play a major part of AG’s future.
Alberta Golf conducts educational seminars for the RCGA Handicap System each year. The RCGA Network continues to be a great benefit to the membership. Members can now access the RCGA Network through the Golf Canada website, eliminating the need to have two different login details. The RCGA Network also received a face‐lift in 2011, with many new tools and icons added to enhance the user experience for both members and club administrators. We can now boast of having 176 clubs using the system representing over 90% of our membership. The launch of the new Alberta Golf brand has been the focus of 2011 for the marketing committee. We have now joined Golf Canada and the majority of the provincial associations in adopting the new golfer over laid on a stylized maple leaf to develop a consistent “family of brands” identity. Along with our new brand we launched a new website that has been well received with many complimenting its functionality and its new fresh look. This August marked the first time that golf was a part of the Western Canada Summer Games, with training opportunities and planning meetings throughout the year our team of juvenile aged golfers played very well. Our groups captured two silver medals over the week and are very excited about the continued training program for the Canada Summer Games in 2013. The Alberta Golf Industry Association became active again this year and partnered with the National Allied Golf Association on a national joint effort to meet with Provincial and Federal M.L.A.’s and M.P.’s. We spent the day at the Alberta Legislature on Tuesday, April 19th and we held meetings with then Premier Ed Stelmach; Speaker of the House, Ken Kowalski; Deputy Speaker and Chair of Committees, Wayne Cao; Mel Knight, Minister of Sustainable Resource Development; Conservative MLA’s: Arno Doerksen; Ken Allred; Evan Berger; Robin Campbell; Cal Dallas; Wayne Drysdale; Art Johnston; Richard Marz; Peter Sandhu; Tony Vandermeer; Teresa Woo‐Paw; and David Xiao; Liberal MLA’s Harry Chase, Kent Hehr; and Bridget Pastoor and Wildrose Alliance member Paul Hinman. Our message was about the positive economic impact that golf offers and our fine environmental stewardship. This was the first
initiative of its type and the feedback from all involved was that it was a very successful effort that should be revisited on a regular basis to keep the golf industry in the forefront of our legislators’ agendas. Finally, the Alberta Golf Association Foundation was able to award 32 scholarships this year ranging from $500 ‐ $3,000 for a total of $55,000. We were also fortunate to add the new Christa Spahmann Scholarship Endowment to the Foundation in 2011. This program was established as a legacy to one of our former juniors who passed away prematurely in 2010. As we look to the future, our operational plans will continue to be consumer centric. We must be aware that we are competing with many entertainment options and that we must position golf as an engaging, fun and contemporary sport that can be enjoyed by the entire family, for a lifetime. Additionally, we must continue to embrace the concept of working with our allied golf associations with the common goal of growing this great game of golf.
Brent Ellenton Executive Director
Player Development Manager Report High Performance Team Alberta was a very exciting program again for 2011 offering strong camaraderie and a competitive group atmosphere for our top athletes. As our juniors compete throughout the season, qualifying for Team Alberta seems to be at the top of their list each year. With many team meetings and a spring training camp, this program continues to prepare our top juniors for the season which we witnessed this year in having 9 boys and 3 girls in the top 30 of the respective national Order of Merits which have been our highest results to date. Training Camps were held for our upcoming juniors in the zones, our under 18 athletes and the returning collegiate and university competitors. In 2012 Alberta will be the host of the Canadian Junior Girls and Ladies Championships and we look to have strong training and preparation opportunities lined up for our female competitors. The Western Canada Games proved to be a great training opportunity for our juvenile aged competitors. Throughout the year we had a number of training opportunities and were able to bring this group very close together. The two teams were able to secure silver medals and we look forward to improving upon that at the 2013 Canada Summer Games in Quebec. Grass Roots National Golf in Schools is ensuring the future of our game. In 2011 we reached 145 schools in the province along with 33 of them being adopted by clubs and individuals. This program also allowed us the opportunity to partner with the PGA of Alberta in its promotion and delivery which is a great step for our two associations. We have developed a strong relationship with the PE Specialists in the province as well which will improve our promotional opportunities. Thank you to Enid Botchett who has been dedicated to creating a buzz about the program in Edmonton. CN Future Links continues to grow with a number of clubs running the various programs that are offered from skills competitions and golf leagues to the learn to play program. Most clubs need the additional assistance of a volunteer to input the data collected which has left a few clubs sticking to their original junior programs. Team Results This season we were fortunate to have some tremendous results at National and International competitions:
Girls AB/MT Ryder Cup Team – Champions Boys AB/MT Ryder Cup Team – 2nd Girls Junior Americas Cup Team – 10th Boys Junior Americas Cup Team – 8th AB Girls Team at RCGA Junior – 2nd AB Boys Team at RCGA Junior – Champions AB Ladies Team at RCGA Amateur – 4th AB Men’s Willingdon Cup Team at RCGA Amateur – T 4th AB Men’s Team at Pacific Coast Amateur – 3rd AB Men’s Team at RCGA Mid‐Amateur – 8th AB Ladies Team at RCGA Senior – 4th AB Men’s Team at RCGA Senior – 2nd
Coaching Our Coaching support was tremendous this year with Randy Robb and Dean Spriddle taking the lead role. The Coaches were involved in provincial camps, parent’s education sessions and assisting our teams at major events. If it wasn’t for the expertise and knowledge that these coaches bring to our programs we wouldn’t be where we are today. We look forward to their involvement again in 2012 Volunteer Support Throughout the year our team really stepped up to ensure we were offering programs to stay in line with the Long Term Player Development Model. From promoting NGIS and CN Future Links to supporting our teams and individuals our volunteers have been a large part of our organization. A special thank you to the Player Development Committee Members and volunteers who were a part of this year! Matt Rollins Player Development Manager
Member Relations Coordinator I had the opportunity to continue working in the areas of volunteer management, handicap and course rating, as well as tournaments in 2011. We once again offered the Volunteer Orientation to both new and existing volunteers. The AG website was re‐constructed and provided an opportunity to promote our volunteer program to the public. The Volunteer Recognition awards were presented at the Spring Meeting. Clothing, business cards and name tags were ordered for our volunteers and staff to promote the new brand in 2011. Training was conducted by each Committee in our various departments in order to educate our volunteer group. I also had the opportunity to provide information and volunteer feedback to the Nominating Committee which aided their decision making and planning for next year and into the future. It was an extremely busy year for the Handicap and Course Rating Committee. Special thanks go to our 5 Zone Captains who did a fantastic job of coordinating their respective rating teams and accommodating all course requests. A total of 20 courses were rated or re‐rated according to the long range schedule in 2011. AG conducted 5 Handicap System Seminars; 4 in person and 1 via video conference. There were 108 attendees and 65 member clubs certified in 2011. Invoices were sent to Golf Canada as per their Handicap and Course Rating Subsidy policies. In 2011, Alberta Golf was able to switch to the new web‐based USGA CRP (www.usgacrp.org), which can be accessed at any computer with an internet connection. I worked closely with Lori Evans to prepare, organize and work at a number of tournament events this year. I was the staff member at the Junior Qualifying in Edmonton, the Mid Handicap / Marg Ward, the Junior Girls Championship, the Sun Life Financial Ladies Amateur Championship, the Senior Ladies Championship and the Ladies Team Classic North event. Special thanks go to the Tournament Chairs and Head Rules Officials at each of these events. It was a pleasure working with each of you. I would like to thank my Committee Chairs Al Qually, Volunteer Development Director, as well as Sylvia Blasken, Handicap and Course Rating Director for their support and enthusiasm this year. Jack Lane Member Relations Coordinator
Membership Services Manager Membership 2011 saw a slight increase in overall membership after the decrease that we saw in 2010. Work continues on a membership visitation package that will be used to educated current member clubs, as well as potential member clubs, on the benefits of joining the association. Invoices for 2011 Membership were sent out in January in an attempt to increase cash flow during February/March. Unfortunately, in 2011 we did not see the same success in increasing cash flow that we have seen in past years. I will be working with the Finance Committee in 2012 to try to determine a way of increasing early payment of membership dues. The 2011 Membership Cards were sent out in late January/early February with the inclusion of the Member Club name and the option to have member’s names pre‐printed on the cards. Activations in 2011 were low with only 13% of the members activating their cards. Work will continue in the New Year to educate the clubs and their members on the benefits of activating their cards. Membership cards in 2012 will once again have at least the Member Club’s name on the club with the majority of the clubs also including the member name as well. The newest feature on the card for 2012 will be the addition of a QR Code on the back of all membership cards. This will give members the ability to scan their cards using a smartphone or QR reader to bring up their official Handicap Factor. This addition will be helpful for use at tournaments to verify handicaps as well as to defend your handicap at the first tee at any course! Public Players Club The PPC had a large increase in overall membership in 2011, growing 34% to 1634 members. The renewal rate of the program continues to increase as we add benefits to the membership offering. Work will continue in the winter as we promote renewals for 2012 starting in January. Marketing The Marketing Committee had a busy year launching the new brand which began with the development of the new website in April. The new website is easy to navigate but yet very informative. Work will continue on the website as we continue to add content and its use continues to grow as the main resource for the association. All marketing materials were developed with the new logo which includes posters, brochures, tournament signage and vehicle decals. The overall response from the branding change has been positive and work now begins on a centennial logo for items in 2012. Our social media presence was higher during this past year as we hired a Social Media Intern, Stewart Thibodeau to assist in this area. Stewart did a terrific job updating Facebook and Twitter on a regular basis and increased our followers substantially over this time. This area will continue to grow as a main point of contact with our membership as the use of social media advances. Donald Stewart Membership Services Manager
Accountant Report
The chartered accounting firm of, Enns and Company were in the office the week of October 24 to audit the 2011 financial statements for the association and the foundation. The audited financial statements are included in the annual report.
Having two C.A.’s on the finance committee really helped to keep us on track last year. Bruce Petrie and Bob Cormier both had sharp eyes and were asking a lot of questions which kept me on my toes.
The 2011‐12 budget has been approved by the board of directors. Our membership numbers increased in 2011 and we hope to see another increase in 2012.
As always we had the finance breakout sessions at the spring meeting which helped to get things off to a good start. When staff and volunteer use the proper forms for tracking and reporting expenses and revenues it makes my job easier. Most tournament chairs used the forms and this helped to speed up the payment of invoices and to track the expenses for all events but we must remind the clubs that they must still send us an invoice
We did not use of our line of credit in 2011 and will likely not need to use it in the next year.
