Alec Cumming

New paintings

Alec Cumming steps back to observe his latest canvas, a lighter, bluer version than the two

paintings that sit, still glistening with wet paint, on the floor of his new studio. For the time being a

large, garret like loft-space in North Norwich is home. This new studio space is one of two bases,

the other being in the capital of India, Delhi and Alec now divides his time and work between the

two cities. But for now Alec is back in the UK and doing what he does best, painting.

The last three years have been very productive for Cumming. Those who have been following his

work since 2008, when he starting working with Art 18/21, can see the development in his

painting and enjoy taking the journey with him as his work acquires a new maturity that belies his

still young years. Whilst a new confidence is evident in his recent paintings, the pulse of where he

is going beats ever stronger.

His new canvases are lighter, more assured and the paint zips across the canvas offering the

viewer a number of different options of engagement. Alec’s new confidence in his mark-making

has also left his slightly self-serious images behind and these are replaced with playful humour

and a sense of fun, perfect for a boy discovering his newly developed place in the world of

painting. Bring into play an encouraging and equally playful young muse and Alec’s series of new

works become a joy to behold, a heady mix of confident youth who is now bold enough to offer us

more to play with. Rather than suggestions of things, we are actually given trees, gardens and

balconies. Legs and arms, boy and girl, carpets and mirrors, dogs and parrots all tease each

other in the wet paint and invite us in to join in the game.
