Real numbers and polynomials

I found this topic hard to grasp at first, because the basic terms I learnt in high school were different from this course’s and had less detail.

Factoring

Radicals

I had trouble with factoring, as it is one of my weaknesses in math. I tend to take a longer time trying to mentally factorize the numbers.

But once I practiced factoring a lot it became easier.

Radicals were straightforward and easy enough after I memorized the formulas here.

Rational and literal equations

Rational equations are one of my strengths as I find it one of the easiest. Literal equations, however, was confusing to me at times.

Word Problems

Word Problems

Work word problems was the hardest kind of word problems for me. But after studying and understanding the type of questions asked with work, I found out which formulas were appropriate to use.

Inequalities

Inequalities surprisingly became one of my most favorite topics. I had some trouble understanding it at first but after I asked for help it became fun.

Word Problems in Inequalities

Quadratic Equations

Solving by the square root property and completing the square were the easiest methods for me, as well as using the quadratic equations.

Equations leading to quadratic form

I found this fun to do because I think of it as solving a quadratic equation backwards.

Discriminants and writing quadratic equations

Discriminants was easy to understand, but writing quadratic equations wasn’t. I had some trouble grasping the topic.

Graphs

Finding the equation

Functions

Remainder Theorem

I liked studying the remainder and factor theorem because I like doing synthetic division, so I found this topic easy.

Factor Theorem

Systems of linear equations

Systems of linear equations

Addition and elimination method is my most preferred method of solving systems. I use the graphing method because I was weak in that area at first but after doing the moodle exercises that involved that, it turned out to be easy.

Systems of linear inequalities

Linear Programming

This topic seemed difficult because we had to combine what we all learnt about systems and graphs to solve a question.

After reading the question multiple times to understand and listing down the requirements and constraints, I could solve these questions easily. But I still have some doubt sometimes about my answers, so I make sure to double check my corner points of the feasible area by using addition/elimination or substitution method.

SHORT AND

LONG

QUIZZES

Short Quizzes

For these two quizzes I did badly because I forgot most of the basics during the start of the term.

I did lots of practice in between short quizzes from time to time and asked friends for help so I managed to score better. Factoring by grouping and solving literal equations became easier for me, although I tend to be slow in factoring.

For SQ 5, I found that solving quadratic equations by factoring was hard because I tend to take time in factoring. In SQ. 6, I had some careless mistakes with my answer.

These last two quizzes were easier for me as they involved synthetic division and the remainder and factor theorem.

Long Quizzes

I didn’t do so well with short quizzes at the start of the term but I scored better over time up to the present. I am most satisfied with my first and third long quizzes so far.

LAB DRILLS

AND

WORKSHEETS

Drills in lab class

I did better in the lab drills depending on the topic. Lab drills were useful because we went through the corrections to questions we found hard, so I learnt a lot. During the second half of the term, I scored better as the topics were easier.

Lab worksheets

Lab worksheets were done either individually or with a partner. I noticed that if my partner and I divide the work between us instead of working through the questions together, chances of getting a lower score is higher. We scored better if we went through each question together.

TASK 4

I enjoyed doing exercises in this website. I usually try as many times as I can to get my desired or perfect score. So it’s a good technique to practice math.

TASK 6

I found this task confusing because I thought there weren’t any errors at first.

The moodle tasks were a good way to gain extra points in my opinion because they’re an easy method of doing homework since it’s online.

END

This algebra course was a challenge for me in the beginning but I overcame it. There are some challenging aspects of the subject, especially those topics which I didn’t learn previously in my high school curriculum, as mentioned in the moodle tasks involving reflection, but I am proud I was able to deal with those challenges by doing lots of practice, asking help from friends and consulting with our laboratory professor from time to time.
