ALL IN TONI

Starting point

After going to the Zürich Library with our class and seeing the old maps that where printed on pieces of fabric, I decided that this would be my starting point: doing something with fabric. Then, I started a research about fabric and the different situations that it is used. Like on table cloths, clothes, bad sheets, towels and etc. Then, I thought of cloth napkins and their connection to food and to more special or fancier dinners.

The idea

Having decided that cloth napkins would be somehow my product, I started to look on my sketchbooks from Switzerland to see what amazed or impressed be since I got here. Here are some of the things:

Drinkable tap water and

All the drinkable fountains in the city

How precise tram and trains times are

ZVV App

Gratis Velo

Some of them may sound silly for someone who have lived here for a while, but to me is still amazing. So, I connected these privileges to the cloth napkins (since they are used on more special situations) and the napkins to food. Thinking about all the

hours I spend on Toni working, I thought of all the special things that we have there and are hidden in a way. The fact that we have sparkling water for free always sounded awesome to me. The feeling that I had when I first found out about it, made me wanted to explore Toni-Areal and all its secrets special privileges.

Visual inspiration

To me it was important that the map looked simple and clear. I thought my idea was interesting and I wanted it to speak louder. It was not my intention to illustrate it or put my personal drawing style. I wanted something as clear as possible. So searched for clear and simple looking maps and pictograms. The public transportation maps using basically only colours and lines were an important influence. And also some maps from wedding invitations and other art and design works using lines and colour helped me to create the picture that I had in mind.

The font chosen for the written parts was the Futura family. Futura is really known for its geometry, so I thought that this would go well with the geometry of the lines.

Pictograms

The pictograms were seen not as drawings or illustrations, but as ways to communicate the idea. So they should be simple and clear. At the beginning, I wanted to do only with shapes ( the kitchen could a triangle, sparkling water a square), but then because of the big amount of information, I decided to do use something not so abstract. Unfortunately, due to the short time, it was not possible to work more on them. And test how they would look with the laser cut machine and the stencil.

Who will use my map?

My map is not for someone who just got in Toni and needs to find his or her way around the building. It’s for people who spend a lot of time there (students for example) and are already a little aware of Toni-Areal’s building and are able to find themselves in the place. Having this in mind, my map doesn’t have the burden to show every place with precision, and therefore can omit some information in order to reach clarity. The user of my map will use it to find new places and he or she can also use the maps that are around the school as an ally.

Process

I based my map on the map that already exists from Toni. Despite some details, I believe that it is a good map and it works well when you need to find your way throughout the building.

(I realised that the hallways from Toni are the way we use to walk inside the building. That may sound too obvious for most of peopleI, but for me it’s something to point out since my university in Brazil is basically in the open air. In order to have a better visualisation of this hallways, I have drawn them on a transparent paper. Later, I started to put them on top of each other to see how I would place them on the map.

These are the first tryouts. At the beginning all was going wrong. The amount of paint going to the fabric was uneven it didn’t look nice or clear. I had to put more weight so the paper with the cut would be more near to the fabric, and also I had to do it slower and with more patience. It’s still not perfect, but I need more time and practice to get the results that I was looking for.

My idea was that this cloth napkin were used by other people from Toni. So I did as many as a could and when the classes are back (january 5th) I’m gonna put them on the wooden table from the third floor. So people can take and use them!
