A Sisterly Message from the Basileus
Greetings Sorors, I hope you enjoyed the holidays with your family and friends and that you are well rested for all of the great things Kappa Omega will accomplish this year. This month, through community service and sisterhood, we celebrate 105 years, as well as 100 years of our incorporation. We began this month with our National Founders’ Day event held in Baltimore, Maryland this past weekend and will end this month with the Metro Atlanta Founders’ Day event to be held on Saturday, February 2. We also pay tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. through the Metro Atlanta MLK Service for Peace Project to be held this Saturday, followed by our own MLK Economic Opportunity Sunday Supper to be held on this Sunday. I hope that you will be able to attend Sunday’s event. We also have the great pleasure of watching the second inauguration of the 44th and current president of the United States of America (the first African-American), President Barack Obama. On March 1, 1923, Kappa Omega was chartered and this year we celebrate 90 years. Please stay tuned as more detailed information will be provided soon. What an awesome way to begin the year! As we continue to prepare for this year, I hope that you will join a program committee. We need each of you to be successful! It is important that we provide service to all mankind, particularly those in our community. Sorors, I hope that you are taking extra precautions in safeguarding yourself against the flu this season. For those who have become ill, please take care of yourself and we hope you get better soon! Last, but definitely not least, I want to thank you again for your confidence in me as I begin to serve another term as Basileus. I am so honored and thankful for this opportunity to serve. Happy 2013!!! With Sisterly Love,
Soror Franka H. Young, Basileus

the donation of pedometers. Each metro chapter has been asked to participate. The pedometers are
to be collected and delivered at Spelman College on Friday, February 1, 2013 between 9:30am –

“Sorors, You are indeed a blessing to all in need. Thank you for the calls, cards (so many), prayers and well wishes you sent my way. The plant dish was beautiful and heartwarming. Sorors, I haven't seen in such a long time were so sweet! I am nearly recovered and will be “back in the saddle again" soon.” Lovingly, Soror Lessye

Emerging Young
Leaders 2013
The Kappa Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa
Alpha Sorority, Incorporated will host the
Emerging Young Leaders Program for middle
school girls again this year at Paul D. West
Middle School. Over the past couple of weeks we
have had several AKAdemy meetings and the
EYLs have been actively engaged in the
curriculum under the nationally mandated
programs.
The EYLs had a wonderful time at our annual
lock in! They were engaged in a variety of fun
activities promoting leadership development,
educational enrichment, self-esteem/character
building, civic engagement and a lot of GIRL
Power!
We ended 2012 with our annual holiday
gathering. The EYLs, and Sorors, had a
wonderful time socializing, singing and playing a
variety of games. It was a wonderful way to end
the year.
I would like to express sincere thanks to all
Sorors who either donated funds or food for our
events, volunteered, participated and or hosted a
workshop. You are the reason we continue to
have a great impact on our youth! Thank You!
Our first AKAdemy meeting was held
Wednesday, January 9, 2013.

Upcoming Activities:
The Health Initiative intends to continue to sell healthy snacks at each chapter meeting, resuming at the next chapter meeting scheduled on January 19, 2013.
The Health Initiative would like to also resume the monthly workouts at the Ivy Community Center and consider holding them open for the community with greater advertisement to generate revenue for the center and promote wellness. This would increase participation and an overall emphasis on wellness.
We are actively recruiting active new members and will be forging relationships with other chapters to co-promote events such as health fairs, forums, and events.
We would like to roll out a revamped version of the KO program called the Healthy Soror which includes on line tracking of activities and wellness tips to meet an overall weight loss goal for the chapter.
The Health initiative will offer the opportunity to have a team to walk or volunteer in the 2013 Breast Cancer 2-day 30 mile walk in October. It is a fundraising activity that would meet one of our corporate objectives.
The Health Initiative will be meeting prior to the chapter meeting to solidify our calendar for the remainder of the year.
