Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939), whose work is indissolubly linked with the Art Nouveau style, was one of the most fascinating artistic personalities of the turn of the 20th century.

He was not only a painter and graphic artist, but also took an interest in sculpture, jewelry, interior decorating, and utilitarian art.

Alfons Mucha, who seduced early 20th century Paris with his art nouveau style and posters of actress Sarah Bernhardt, brings everywhere a splash of colour. His ornate and dramatic style, all curves and arabesques and rich in floral designs, was quickly established and became the height of fashion.

Famous chocolate, biscuit and cigarette companies wanted his work to promote their products, while Parisian publishing houses recruited him to do book illustrations, such as Ilsee, Princesse de Tripoli by Robert de Flers, which contains no less than 134 drawings by Mucha.

Mucha produced a flurry of paintings, posters, advertisements, and book illustrations, as well as designs for jewelry, carpets, wallpaper, and theatre sets in what was termed initially The Mucha Style but became known as Art Nouveau (French for "new art").

With this highly successful poster, Mucha took his place in the celebrated Salon des Cent. His first exhibition was held under the auspices of the magazine "La Plume", whose publisher,

Leon Deschamps, discovered this poster motif- with its "half-naked woman, her head encircled, halo-like, by golden hair cascading in arabesques" - almost by chance. His advice to Mucha: "Execute this design just as it is, and you will have created the masterpiece of the illustrated decorative poster."

It was Mucha’s belief that through the creation of beautiful works of art the quality of life would be improved. He also believed that it was his duty as an artist to promote art for ordinary people. He was able to fulfill both of these objectives by means of his innovative concept of the mass-produced decorative panel. Of the panels, Mucha later wrote: ‘I was happy to be involved in an art for the people and not for private drawing rooms. It was inexpensive, accessible to the general public, and it found a home in poor families as well as in more affluent circles.’

Although Moravian by birth and descent, Mucha experienced his greatest successes in Paris. His work documents the vital atmosphere of the city at a time when it was not just the capital of France, but the glittering cultural capital of the world; it captures the vitality of the fin de siecle and the belle epoque with all their worldliness and decadence, all their predilections and yearnings.
