Well,the inalmeetingoftheyearisuponus.Iamreallylookingforwardtoseeingeverybody

there.ThegolftournamentisgoingtokickusoffonFriday,November6,andtheboardmeet-

ingwillstartSaturdayat9AM.ThefacilitiesattheShingleCreekGolfClubaretopnotchand

theyreallyknowhowtorunatournament. Thestaffisfriendlyandthemarshalshelpsteer

thegolfersaroundthecourseandkeepthe lowoftheroundgoing.Ihopeallwhoarereading

this,andplaythegame,willjoinus.Itisagreattime!

TheSaturdayboardmeetingisgoingtobebrokenupintodifferentparts. Wewillstartat9

AM,thenrecessat10AMtocheckouttheexcitingnewproductsandinformationourvendorswillpresentto

usattheTableTopExpo.At2PMwewillreconvenethemeetingtodiscussmorebusinessandthenendwitha

raf le. Everyonewhoattendsthemeetingwillautomaticallybeenteredonce. Thegolf tournamentwillalso

provideopportunitiestowinraf letickets.Cashprizeswillbegivenawayatthecommencementofthemeet-

ing.

Thisyearhasbroughtonmanychangestotheassociation.Whilechangecanattimesbedreadful,I inditexcit-

ing.Althoughwearenotatthemembershipnumberswewouldliketobe,weareattheheightofparticipation

notseeninyears.Theattendanceatthemeetingshasbeenincredible.Wearesellingoutalloftheroomnights

atthehotels.Wearehavingtoaddmoreandmoreseatingspaceeachmeeting(sorryWanda).Thediscussions

havebeenproductive,andtheamountofmemberssharingtheirthoughtsandideashasbeenverybene icial.

Fromthecreatingofthenewvisionstatement,amendingthebylaws,makingthewebsitemoreappealing,and

havingFridaynightmeetandgreets, tobringingbackanexpowherethevendorscanshowcasetheirwares.

Thecommitteechairshavebeenhardatworkandweallarereapingthebene its.Icannotthankthemenough

fortheirhardworkanddedication.Asthecommitteechairsgothroughtheirreportsatthemeeting,Iwould

likeeveryonetounderstandhowhardtheyhaveworkedbefore,during,andafterthemeetingstogettheprop-

erinformationtotheboard.Iencouragemorememberstojoinacommitteeortwo.Oneofthebene itsofcom-

mitteemembershipisyouareabletohavealargervoiceinwheretheAAFisgoing,participateintheplanning

necessarytogetwhereweneedtobe,andhelpdecidetheroletheassociationwillassumeinchangingthealu-

minumindustry.Thisisyourof icialinvitationtogetinvolved.Togetherwecanchangetheindustry.

Aswemoveinto2016,themembershipcommitteeispumpedup,thewebsitehasanewlook,andtheof icers

are energized. Iwant to personally invite you to come to the next boardmeeting and see for yourself the

OnSeptember15,NevinAshe, JohnMeyer,ScottMyers ,andDonLeggett leda

kickoff meeting for a new Gulf Coast chapter based in the Lee County area.

Therewere21 individuals inattendance; sevengave their commitment to join

thenewchapter.ThenextmeetingisscheduledforOctober12.Theupcoming

lunchmeetingwillfeaturetheelectionofchapterof icers.

Someinterestingfactsortopicsthatcameoutofthemeeting:

When askedwhy theywere attending the chaptermeeting, the overwhelming

response fromattendeeswas, "Iwas invited." Althoughon thesurface thean-

swerwasshortandconcise,itwasveryinsightful.TorebuildtheAAFwemust

havelocalmeetingsandinvitecontractorstoattendandjointheAAF.

Duringthecourseoftheevening,Nevinspokeongrowingasouthwestpresence

atthestatemeetings.JohnMeyerspokeonhelpingcontractorsgrowtheirbusi-

ness.ScottMyersgaveaspeechonhowlocalcontractorsarethefoundationof

theAAfandeveryorganization isonlyasgoodas the foundation. DonLeggett

followedupwithapresentationonseveralkeypoints:avisionofmembership

based onwebsite advertising; separating your business from the competition;

theabilityofthestatetohelpwithlocalissues;howalocalchaptercreatesthe

ability oflocalcontractorstobuildworkingrelationshipswiththebuildingde-

partments; and, inally, thatmembersof theAAFaregenerally leaders in their

ieldbecauseofthediligenceoftheorganization.DuespaidbytheAAFmember-

shipsustainstheabilityofJoeBelcherofJDBCodeServicestoattendlocal,state,

andnationalbuildingmeetings,inordertokeepthealuminumindustryabreast

of possible changes to the building industry. If left unchecked, these changes

couldproducelegislationthatwouldbedetrimentaltoyourbottomline.

TheNextAluminumConundrum:AluminumExtrusionsandStainlessConnectorsTomJohnston,Town&CountryIndustries

Italwaysseemsthatthealuminumindustryfacesonegianthurdleafteranother.Firstitwasbeamspans,andthenitwas

oneconnectionoveranotherfollowedbymultipleengineeringformulasfrommultipleprofessionalengineers.Thereis

nodoubtthateveryonehasgottensmarter,aluminumstructuresarebuiltbetterthantheyeverhavebeen,andweknow

moreaboutfailurepointsandmodesthanever.Thereisstillmuchtolearn.Thereareformulasthatneedtweakingand

mostofallwelearnedthatthereisnotjustonewaytodoeverything.

Thelatestissuethealuminumstructureindustryisfacingishowtoimprovethefastenersthatconnectallthataluminum.

Inthe1990’s,themajorityofthescrewsbeingusedwerebarelyzincplatedCarbonsteelandquiteafewwerejustpaint-

edsteel.Weallknowhow long those lasted.Newer improvedcoatingsemergedsuchasXylan,Ruspert,Ceramicsand

someothers.Rustresistanceimprovedgreatlyandoverallwesawagoodincreaseintheaestheticlifeofacage.Unfortu-

nately,goingfromacoupleofrustfreeyearstohopefullyahalfdozenyears,showedthatwestillneededimprovement.I

stillwonderhowmanycagesthatfailedinthehurricaneyearsof2004-2006actuallyfailedbecausetheconcretescrews

hadrustedthroughandthecageneverreallystoodachance.Wewillneverreallyknow.

Inthelastfewyearsmanysuppliershavebeenhardatworkdevelopingbetterandbettercoatingsandcombinationsof

screwbasematerialsandcoatings.Alltheseeffortsaregoodforourindustry,butwhatweneedtorecognizeisbetterhas

manydifferentmeaningsandweneedtoknowwhatthetrueeffectsareofthesecombinations.Inthelastfewyears,we

haveseenmultiplewaystoimprovenotonlytheaestheticlifebutalsothestructurallifeofaluminumstructures.There

aremultiplenewofferingsofupgradedcarbonsteelcoatedanchors,variousscrewcapsandcovers,multiplevariationsof

coatedanduncoated300seriesStainlessSteel,bothZincplatedandorcoated410SSandIamsureevenafewothers.

Thebigquestioniswhatisthedifference?

Thereareafewwaysto indoutwhatimprovesthesituationandbyhowmuch.The irstwayistoresearchontheinter-

netandtocontactcoatingcompanies.Whenyoudo,you indchartssuchasthatinFigure1.

Figure1 showshowvariousmetals react to one another. The fur-

theraparttheyare, themorecorrosivetherelationship.Forthisto

reallybecomeapparent,youneedaconductor.Oneofthebestcon-

ductorsissaltwaterorsaltyhumidairwhichissomethingwehave

plentyof.

Thesecondwayistophysicallytestcoatingsandbasematerialcom-

binations.Thisprovedthatifyoutakedarnnearanycoatedsteelor

stainless steel screw,with aperfect inish (nodrivermarks on the

headorthreadmarksfrominstallation,theywillalltestprettywell.

Thethirdoptionistotakeallthesevariationsandphysicallyinstall

thescrews,withauseddriver(justasanyinstallerwould),intoAlu-

minumandthenputthewholeassemblyintothetestchamberand

seewhathappens.Town&CountryStarteddoingthat in2001and

hasbeentestingpartslikethiseversince.Thesaltspraytestingcom-

panieshadneverseenthisdonebefore.Wecouldnot indanydata

oncoatedscrewstestedwhileinstalledinabasemetalanywherethen,andcannotstilltothisday.Whatwefoundisnot

inlinewithwhatwelearnedontheinternet,andinsomecasescompletelyreversedwhatwefoundbytestingscrewsin-

dependentofthealuminum.

On August 24, 1992, Hurricane Andrew hit South

Floridaandchangedmanylivesandindustries.Oneof

thebiggestproductchangesfortheHurricaneProtec-

tion Industry came from thenew testingprocedures

implemented by Miami-Dade Building Code Compli-

ance.Shutterswereallengineeredprior to that. Ac-

cordions shutters either had an aluminum post or a

304SSscrewattachingthemtothetracks.Intesting,

both faileddramaticallyandeveryaccordionshutter

had to be redesigned. The solution came through

somedesignchanges,butmostlytochangingtoa410

Heat Treated SS screw attaching the shutter to the

tracks.Theproblemwas410SShadcarbonandeve-

ryonewasworried about them rusting. At the same

time,someshuttermanufacturersthathadbeenusing

304 SS screws had been experiencing catastrophic

failureofthealuminumshutterduetothegalvanicreactionofthe304SStothealuminum.Figure2showshowbadthis

canbeafter6yearsonthebeach.

Withcompatibilityissuessuchasthis,combinedwiththesofter304SSmaterialwhichoftenwouldfailduringtesting,the

majorityof the industry chose410HTSS screwsandcoated them toprotect against rust.These sameshutters canbe

foundalongthebeachinstalledasfarbackas1994withlittleifanyredrust.Butthatisnottheendofthestory.

AsTown&Countrycontinuedresearchingtheeffectsofvariouscoatingsandbasematerials,wediscoveredthatchoosing

differentcoatingscoulddrasticallyimprovethecompatibilityofSStoAluminum.Figure3shows4differentscrewsallinstalledintoonepieceofaluminumandalltestedatthesametimetoseehowtheywouldreact.Thetopscrewsarecar-

bonsteelconcretescrewswithslightlyvariedcoatings,acarbonsteelselfdrillscrewwithaBlackcoatingandabare304

SSscrewlowerright.Thetopscrewsperformedwellwithonlytheslightestredrustbeginningtoappearwherethedriv-

erroundedthecoatingofftheupperrighthead.TheblackSDSscrewisshowingsignsofredrustbutisstilldoingwell;

butthebiggestsurpriseisthatthe304SSisshowingextensivegalvanicreactionwiththealuminum.304SSwillnotshow

redrustduring its lifespan,but

can show discolorations. This

Theanswerisalmostalwaysyes.Justasvariousbasemetalsreactdifferentlytoeachother,coatingsalsoreactdifferently

whencombinedwiththosesamemetals.Overthelast14yearsTown&Countryhastestedvariouscoatingsandplatings

onCarbonSteel,304SSandon410HTSSallwhilescrewedintoaluminum.Theresultswereallovertheboard.Itiscom-

monlyknownthatZincisagreatbasecoatingasitsacri icesitslifetosavetheweakerofthematerialsitadjoinswhichis

aluminuminthiscase.Ifyouareaboater,thisworksjustliketheZincanodeonyouroutboardmotor.TheZinccorrodes

andsavestheothermetals.WhentheZincisgonethemetaltakesthehit.Manyofthecoatingsavailabletodayuseabase

layer of Zinc. Then coatings are added for additional protection and are often followedupwith a colored top coat to

matchAluminumExtrusions.Thesecanworkwellandareverypopular.OthercoatingsdonotuseaZincbaseandtakea

differentroute.Insteadofhavingasacri icialbasecoating,theyworktokeepthelayersofcoatingintactwhileisolating

thedissimilarmetals.Figures4and5giveyouanideahowthesame410HTSSscrews,inthesamepercentageofalumi-

numreactwithdifferentcoatings.

Asyoucanprobablytell,thereisnorightanswer.Therearemanyfactorsinvolvedinchoosingthebestscrew,basemate-

rialandcoatingforyouraluminumstructures.Town&CountryhasconstantlyworkedtoimprovewhatweofferinCar-

bonSteelandwiththenew410HTT&C-Ultracotescrewline.Wechose410HTSSasabasemetalforanumberofreasons.

Firstisstrength.410HTSSisratedataminimumof180ksiTensile/135ksiyieldstrengthVS304SSwhichisratedata

minimumof75ksiTensile/30ksiYieldforannealedand85ksiTensile/45ksiYieldforcoldworked.Secondisthat410SS

doeshavesomecarbonandwillhold inamagneticdriverwhichenhancesusability.Thirdgoesbackto theadditional

strengthdifferencebetween410HTSSand304SS.Whendrivingscrewsinwithanimpactgunorhighspeeddrill,you

havetobeverycarefulnottotwisttheheadsoffofsofter304SS.Onetwistedheadcanmeanagoodchunkofwastedma-

terialandortimetoreplace.

Ifyouchoosetobuildyouraluminumstructureswitha300seriesSS,thenyouneedtomakesureyourengineerofrecord

hastakenintoconsiderationtheuseofthesoftermaterial.Mostscreenstructureengineersbasetheirdesignsandcon-

nectionsontheindustrystandard1022CarbonSteelwhichaveragesaround68ksiforTensile/58ksiYield.The300se-

riesofSSexceedsthetensilenumbersof1022CarbonSteelbutfallsanywherefrom22-49%shortof1022Carbonsteel

in theYield area.Thismeansanengineer should review their calculations tomakesure theirdesignsare takingyour

screwmaterialintoconsiderationandshouldspecifythatinyourengineeringdrawings.

Impactgunsareverypopularbuttheytakeatollonthecoatingsduetothehammeringeffect.Therearetwokindsofhex

driversonthemarketandthereisasigni icantdifferenceinthem.Thestandardhexdriverhasastraightlinebetween

thehexpointsandhasatendencytoroundoffheadsandbetoughoncoatings.Anewertypeofhexdriveriscalledalob-

ulardriver.Insteadofstraightlinesconnectingthehexpointsasonastandarddriver,alobulardriverbitesdownonthe

large latareasofahexhead.ThisgivesalobulardriveramuchhighercontactpointwiththescrewheadVSastandard

driverwhichreliesonthehexpoints.YoucanseethedifferenceinthedriversinFigure6.

Whenitwasallsaidanddone,aftertestingmanyvariousbasematerialsandvarietiesofcoatings,our indingswerethat

410HTSSofferedthehigheststrength,easiestmostreliableuse,thegreatestprotectiontoitsaluminumhostandwhen

properlycoated,wascapableofexceedingthelifespanofthetypicalaluminumstructurebothstructurallyandcosmeti-

cally. What you can count on is that the assembly screw selections available today from most suppliers that have

knowledge intheAluminumStructure industryare farbetterthanwhatwasavailable15yearsagoresulting inarare

win/winforthecontractor.

 This form must be filled out and payment received before space is approved and assigned.  

Booth size is approximately 8’ x 8’.  

Booth package set up includes 8’ x 8’ space, two chairs, and one 8’ table.

Eligibility All  licensed  aluminum  construc on  contractors  who  are members of AAF are eligible.  You must be an AAF member to enter the contest.  Entry Details AAF reserves the right to eliminate a par cular category if no entries are  submi ed, or  two or more  classes may be  com-bined at the judges’ discre on.  A completed entry form and payment of the entry fee  is  re‐quired and must be  submi ed with each entry. Addi onal entry  forms  are  available on  request. Any  reproduc on of the entry form that  is completely  legible  is acceptable. The entry form is on the reverse side of this page.  Projects may be entered  in more than one category. A sepa‐rate entry form and fee must be submi ed for each category entered.  All entries and accompanying photographs become the prop-erty  of  the  Aluminum  Associa on  of  Florida,  Inc.    AAF  re-serves  the  right  to use any of  the submi ed materials  in  its own publica ons and for promo on or display purposes.  Each Entry Must Include    1. Entry form filled in completely    2. Entry fee: $50 per entry    3. A minimum of two and maximum of six 8” x 10” color         photos of the completed project from different view           points.  Color lasers or inkjet print out are NOT         acceptable. Before and a er photos are not required,         but they do help! Suppor ng documents such as         drawings are helpful too.    4. A release form signed by the property owner   Judging The  installa on will be  judged as to architectural compa bil-ity,  crea vity,  overall  appearance,  fitness  of  purpose  and proper detailing.    

Judges will not know the names of those submi ng entries.  All photographs and accompanying entry blanks will be coded and  iden fied  by  number only.  The  decisions  of  the  judges are final.   As a condi on of entry, each contestant agrees to accept those decisions.  

The panel of  judges will be selected by  the President of  the AAF in coopera on with the Commi ee Chairman.
