AMALURRA, UNA SEMILLA PARA LA NUEVA TIERRA Por Irene Goikolea

“Amalurra,” Mother Earth, Pacha Mama, is the Basque name of the
community project that was born as a dream of unity and coexistence.
(Bizkaia), Caparacena (Granada) y Can Cases (Barcelona) compuesto por unas
Amalurra is a project of intentional communities located in Artzentales
(Bizkaia), Caparacena (Granada) and Can Cases (Barcelona) consisting
of about 100 people, adults and children together. This project,
materialized on the basis of a work of introspection and development that
I have facilitated in my groups, expects to be a contribution to the process
of planetary transformation in favor of a new global consciousness, in line
with other social movements that share the same intention.

The seed of Amalurra was conceived in the early 1990s within the first
circles of women that I organized among my acquaintances. The purpose
of these circles was to awaken to the sentient capacity of the sacred
feminine aspect, buried under the ethics of the patriarchate. In them, we
wanted to acknowledge and honor our excluded, repressed, or forgotten
feelings to recover our lost life. Some time later, once that we women had
recuperated our feminine space and our own voice, these circles opened
their doors to men, who decided to join this movement. Thus, the circles
became mixed.

The idea of living in community was the result of an introspective process
that helped us become aware of our unconscious contents. That way we
started to embrace our dark parts or what is known as the shadow; that is,
the qualities we tend to hide because we consider them negative, and that
we project on the other, causing a relational conflict.
In this sense, the community is a very suitable platform to promote the
encounter with oneself through the other. In Amalurra, responsible
interaction gave us the opportunity to become aware of our excluded
aspects in order to welcome them and complete us or empower us of the
full potential of our identity.
5
In the beginning of our community experience, I considered essential to
promote spaces for dialogue and coexistence that would allow us to
access the wisdom of our ancestors and retrieve intrinsic values of our
culture, such as unity and solidarity, which counteract the current tendency
towards individualism. On the other hand, I was also concerned with
restoring the link with our Mother Earth to relearn to be her children. In
this sense, the work we carried out to repair the property that we bought to
materialize the community gave us this opportunity.

When we arrived in Artzentales, in 1994, the land had been abandoned
for several years and it was covered in brambles. The waters were
stagnant and the indigenous trees of the valley had been replaced by
extensive pine and eucalyptus forests. The buildings of the seminary of the
Holy family, previous occupants of that land, were in ruins.

Aware that nature was a mirror that reflected our inner itinerary, our
internal achievements had an external reflection. Thus, we made the
stagnant waters flow as we delved into our deeper layers, in tune with an
emotional ecology. We got in touch with the feelings that we had denied.
These acted as the purifying agent of our emotions, which constitute, like
the waters on the planet, an 80 % of our physical reality. This work on
emotional ecology led me to realize that the origin of a part of the
degradation that manifests in the external environment lies inside us, in
our depths. My approach to ecology was, therefore, from the inside to the
outside.

Removing the brambles made us realize that they symbolized those
aspects that suffocated our soul. Likewise, we set out to recover the native
vegetation, planting thousands of oak trees in an attempt to rescue the
wisdom that the earth kept. Even the stones told us of our inner stones and
of how, sometimes, carrying one of them limited us. We made an
important change in our lives by listening to the psyche expressing itself
through the Earth. We turned our look to our people and our ancestors.
9
The community took shape as we participated in the natural flow of life.
Some of us got married, others found a partner, and many had children
who have grown up in an atmosphere of fraternity, linked to a body larger
than their own family: a family of families.
10
social, cultural y natural.
In Amalurra we have practiced the common taking of decisions and have
developed cooperation through personal interrelationships and joint work
goals, promoting mutual aid and conflict resolution, as well as service in
favor of the community. In this way, we have fostered a series of values
that define us as a group of people with collective aspirations, committed
with ourselves and with our familial, social, cultural, and natural
environment.
11
Individual homes that preserve the privacy of the families coexist with
common outdoor spaces and a hotel resort, which is a platform to project
what we wanted to achieve inside us: personal, familial, and social
cohesion. This cohesion is manifested in acts of solidarity and unity, in a
sense of belonging and, above all, in the warm welcome that anyone who
visits the community receives.
12
The spiritual dimension is an indispensible component of our community
life. For this reason, rituals are an essential aspect in the dynamics of
Amalurra. They are an excellent vehicle to articulate feelings and ideas
that are not easily put into words. They also create a space for the soul to
express itself. At the same time, rituals link us with our ancestors and with
Mother Earth. I understood the importance of recuperating the ritual as a
form of initiation in the face of the changes associated with our evolution,
not only regarding ourselves, but also our environment. In these times, in
which we learn about everything except life and death, I consider it crucial
to celebrate rituals that remind us that we need our ancestors, our parents
and our teachers to be initiated in life.
13
The main contribution of Amalurra is having embodied, in the physical
environment of the three communities, the vibration of a sincere intention
to combine spirit and matter in daily life. This practice may contribute to
alchemize our life and propitiate that the subtlety of light, proper of our
connection with the transcendent, embraces and incorporates the density
of the shadow, proper of our human condition.
14
Amalurra was born out of our attempt to go over all that separates us
from our transpersonal experience of unity. In this context of coexistence,
we have celebrated together, in a tribal manner, agreements and
disagreements, successes and failures, joys and sorrows, profits and
losses, and births and deaths, articulating the steps of a dance in which
the exterior has reflected our inner transformation as we became aware of
what was not in order to open a space for what it really is.
15
Eres casa, Madre Tierra, Nuestro hábitat natural.
THE COMMUNITY In the heart of the world, Lives the community, A path of knowledge, A way of liberty.
It is a space for encounter, That creates the fraternity Of what we really are, Fragments of Unity.
It is a gateway to memory, An access to the veracity Of our two natures, Divinity and humanity.
Spirit and feeling, Ties of fraternity, That intone inside us The song of eternity.
Community, you embrace Light and darkness And signal with your course The longed-for happiness.
You are home, Mother Earth, Our natural territory. You are the soul of the world, The home of humanity.
