Busy festive season for pawn shops

THE new year is traditionally a busyseason for pawn shops as people tryto recover from overspending. Localpawn shops say this year is no differ-ent.
“We were very busy over Decem-ber. People mostly bought stuff andbusiness picked up a little bit,” saysChristoNienaber.“Theyboughtmost-ly televisions, speakers, cellphones, laptops and iPads,” he adds.
“While pawning was slow over
December, it escalated after Christ-mas. People spend wildly at Christ-mas and then need to pawn.

Paul Wilson says during his 14years in the industry, second-handsales always spike in December.
“It is hugely varied. I deal a lot intools and electronics, all commonlyused stuff for do-it-yourself like anglegrinders, which aremuch sought aft-er.

Dealing withstress
FEVER REPORTER
IT is that time of the year, with the best intentions in the world, we decide to set NewYear resolutions.
“I saw a cartoon recently where it saidthat New Year resolutions are the things we
keep for the first week of January. Anger andstress are two of the most significant contributors to ill health and premature deathin the Western world. Danger occurs whenanger and stress become uncontrollableand a way of life,” says Alan Symons, angerand stress management consultant andfacilitator.
Symonssaysstresscanbedefinedastheresponse that occurs when the body responds to challenges or difficult situationsknown as stressors. Tense neck muscles, stomach cramps, difficulty in concentrating, panic attacks, etc, are a few symptoms.
How to deal with stress.• Resolve and commit to writing which
stressor/s you want to deal with and howyou are going to go about it.
• The brain, that amazing piece of greymatter weighing about three kilograms andcontaining billions of cells, functions to alarge extent on habits, good or bad. Oneneeds to set up a mental road block and redirect that “bad stressor habit”. This redirection may take some time to become anew “good stressor habit”.
• Keep a journal of your progress. Thiswill measure your success or incidentswhere improvement are necessary. Congratulate and treat yourself on a success.
• Tell a loyal person/s of your resolutionand ask them to give you honest feedbackon how you are doing.
PHOTO: SOURCEDStress can be defined as the response that occurs when the bodyresponds to challenges or difficultsituations known as stressors.
• Even if not on yourwritten list, resolve tonot allow someoneelse’s stress to becomeyour stress. For example that car that is tailgating you and youcannot move over —that’s their stress notyours, don’t own it.
• As you resolve theone’s you committed towriting, take on a fewmore.
• Seek adviceshould you be unsurewhere to start.

Getting ready for schoolFEVER REPORTER
THE beginning of a new school year signifies the start of education costs. Parentsspend on average between R400 andR1 000 per child on stationery, dependingon whether stationery is included in schoolfees, while uniform costs can reach an astronomical R3 000, and this excludesschool fees, a daunting start to the year, but it appears as though most parents arewell prepared.
Alta and Aubrey Philips say they initially spent R800 on stationery for their twochildren, but have not bought everything.
“Uniforms are especially expensive thisyear since my daughter is starting Grade 6and my son has to get a special matric uniform,” Alta says.
These she estimates will cost herR2 500 and R3 000 respectively, but these
parents have saved for this during the year.“IspentR400todayandboughtthebe
ginningoftheyear stationery for R800earlier,” Gavin Pillay says.
He says his girls have looked after theiruniforms well and buying new ones aren’tnecessary.
Having received a 10% mystery discount Carlos and Lily Quintal spent overR1 000 on stationery for two high schoolchildren. They felt it was reasonable as Lilyis a school teacher who says stationerycosts in the region of R800 per pupil.
“We still have to buy school pants andshoes, which will likely cost R400,” saysCarlos.
“I spent R2 000 on stationery for mytwo children.
“Fortunately, they do not need new uniforms and I saved during the year for this,”Sindisiwe Khumalo says.
