The MLIS program at the AUE focuses on the following:

• Latest knowledge and professional skills needed for success in the workplace.

• Producing information workers who possess the knowledge, skills and competencies to manage and operate effectively in the age of information explosion.

• Laying the foundation upon which students may launch exciting careers in library and information sector.

Prepare MLIS graduates to assume professional and managerial roles in varied and evolving library and information fields, and promote LIS education in the UAE and the region so as to contribute to its development in the Gulf area.

Goal 1: Offer a graduate degree program that will impart the required knowledge and competencies to enable graduates to deliver quality library and information services.

The program design is based on a clear perception of what the library and information profession in the UAE and the region requires in the present time and in the coming future.

On the one hand•Libraries are undergoing enormous changes.•Staff is witnessing a competency shift.•Greater expectations from a diverse user community.•Need to respond to the complex and changing needs of different user groups locally and reach out the global community.

On the other hand• HH Sheikh Nahyan the Minister of HESR (2008) “There is

urgent need to launch library, information & archival studies” • Sustained shortage of qualified staff.• NCDR (2008) study 5000 archivists.• Boumarafi’s (2002) study showed: o The need for 12680 librarians for university, school & public

libraries.o Library & Information profession is expatriate predominant. UAE

nationals are very under represented.o More opportunities for information workers in the K-economy.

Admission Requirements

• A Bachelor in any discipline with a GPA no less than 2.5.

• TOEFL score of 550 or higher.• 11 courses totaling 36 credit hours that

include:o9 Core Courses for a total of 30 Credit Hours.o2 Elective courses for a total of 6 Credit Hours.

Assessment Strategy

Students are assessed in a number of different modes and according to a variety of criteria.

It is important to understand that assessment is closely connected to both teaching methodology and learning outcomes in all cases.

Teaching outcomes in the courses will give specific achievement targets, part of whose purpose is to allow precise assessment and evaluation.

It is important that assessment should not be seen as solely judge mental, for it is also closely connected to the learning process.
