CULTURE SHOCK
Odd cultural events
in the UK
Cheese rolling is one of the strangest and
most spectacular of all Britain’s weird and
wonderful traditions.
• The Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake is an annual
event held on the Spring Bank Holiday at Cooper's Hill.
Near Gloucester in England. It is traditionally by and for the
people who live in the local village of Brockworth, but now
people from all over the world take part. The Guardian called it a
"world-famous event", and indeed, in 2013, a 27-year-old
American and a 39-year-old Japanese each won one of the four
races. The event takes its name from the hill on which it occurs.
• The event is traditional. In recent years, it has been managed in
a quasi-official manner, but since 2010 the event has taken
place spontaneously without any management.
•
The tradition is at least 200 years old, but
may date back to an ancient pagan ritual at
the return of Spring.
3-4 thousand
spectators
attend Cheese
Rolling each
year
And the number of
competitors raise year
by year
And of course, the proud owners of the prize – 7
pound Double Gloucester round cheese.

• The Edinburgh Festival Fringe (The Fringe) is the world's
largest arts festival, with the 2012 event spanning 25 days
totalling over 2,695 shows from 47 countries in 279
venues.Established in 1947 as an alternative to
the Edinburgh International Festival, it takes place annually
in Scotland's capital, in the month of August. The Fringe is a
showcase for the performing arts, particularly theatre and
comedy (which has seen substantial growth in recent
years), although dance and music are also represented. In
2012, 36% of shows were comedy and 28% theatrical
productions. Theatrical productions range from the classics
of ancient Greece to William Shakespeare, Samuel
Beckett and contemporary works. In 2012, 1,418 shows
were having their world premiere.
28.014 performances in 1800 shows
261 venues with 16.990 performers
Each year in August, the
streets of Edinburgh, Scotland
become the biggest stage of
street performances in the
world.
If you wanted to see every
performance, one after the other, it
would take over four years!

• Glastonbury Festival (originally Pilton Pop, Blues & Folk
Festival; current formal title Glastonbury Festival of
Contemporary Performing Arts) is a five-day music festival
that takes place near Pilton, Somerset, England. In
addition to contemporary music, the festival hosts dance,
comedy, theatre, circus, cabaret, and other arts. It is
organised by Michael Eavis on his own land, Worthy Farm
in Pilton. Leading pop and rock artists have headlined,
alongside thousands of others appearing on smaller
stages and performance areas. Films and albums
recorded at Glastonbury have been released, and the
festival receives extensive television and newspaper
coverage. Glastonbury is the largest greenfield festival in
the world .
In 2005 - 153.000 people attended.
₤125 tickets, sold within 3 hours.
₤1.350.000 raised for charities.
This festival is being visited by people from all around the world,
and is most associated with the term British summer.
This festival is legendary for its 17
stages, mud, sea of tents and
mass of humanity in search of an
‘alternative’ experience.
