Highlights of the report
The Overall Job Index fell from 1000 in July 2008 to 776 in November 2008, a marginal decline as
compared to the previous months.
Delhi witnesses an increase in new jobs in November ; Index moves up by 7%
Pharma and Telecom see growth in job opportunities and stay close to the recruitment levels in July
Finance Professionals see a slowdown in hiring in the industry by almost 32%
Naukri.com, India’s No.1 Job Site, has spread its reach across industries, functional areas, metros, tier II and
tier III cities across India. ‘JobSpeak’ is a unique initiative by Naukri.com to provide its stakeholders and users
an overview on job prospects and attractive occupations as well as a peek into industries gaining
attractiveness and industries losing sheen. Overall, it is indicative of the health of the economy.
The report compiles an index on new job listings added to the site every month. The listings are
representative of the jobs posted on the site by recruiters that are clients of Naukri.com. The team at
Naukri.com has successfully mapped and derived trends to reflect the online availability of jobs. To calculate
the index, new jobs in July have been taken on a base of 1000. The November index is compared with July. A
summary of trends in November is presented in the Executive Summary section. The charts with the
corresponding numbers have been collated in the annexure.
Executive Summary
The Overall Job Index fell from 781 in October 2008 to
776 in November 2008, a marginal decline as
compared to the drop in previous months. The hiring
scenario remained subdued post the festive season, as
the impact of slowdown sieved through most
industries.
Despite the slump, Pharma and Telecom have
maintained stability at the July level. The worst
affected sectors include Banking and Real Estate with a
decline in jobs by almost 15% in November compared with October 2008. The demand for IT Hardware and
Telecom professionals moved up by 13% during the month, while demand for IT- Software and Business
Development professionals moved up marginally

City wise Analysis: New job opportunities bounce back in Delhi
For Delhi – NCR, the index indicates an increase in new jobs, the index went up from 786 in October to
841 in November.

Index Value of Jobs by City
Mumbai saw a greater dip in November as compared to October. The index dipped to 692 from 715 in
November.
Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Pune remained stable at the October levels indicating
stability in creation of new jobs.
The hiring situation in Chandigarh improved, the index moved up from 656 in October to 726 in
November 2008, indicating an increase in new jobs. According to the index, new jobs in Jaipur
increased with the index moving up from 769 in October 2008 to 879 in November 2008.
Industry wise analysis: Pharma and Telecom sectors cheer up the recruitment scenario
The index remains at October levels for most industries; the index of IT – Software & Hardware, Oil and
Gas, FMCG picked up marginally.
Pharma and Telecom have been most robust with higher job availability and the index stable at the July
level. The index for Pharma and Telecom sectors are at 996 and 945 respectively.
Banking and Financial Sector dips further to 598 in November from 689 in October and almost a 40%
decline since July.

Real Estate has also been severely affected and has seen a decline in new jobs by almost 50% since
July. The index at 504 reflects a subdued sentiment of hiring within the industry
Niche sectors like Government, Security Services and Legal saw an increase in new jobs as compared to
July, though at a lower level as compared to October 2008.
Functional Area /Department Analysis: The index saw a marginal change in hiring as compared to
October across most functional areas.
IT Hardware and Telecom professionals witnessed an increase in new jobs by over 10%. The index
moves up fro m 786 in October to 887 in November 2008
IT Software professionals saw an increase in demand with the index moving up from 761 to 784.
Sales and Business development professionals saw a marginal increase in demand as compared to
October.
Banking and Insurance moved further down by from 708 in October 2008 to 680 to November 2008.

Methodology
Data has been sourced from Naukri.com and is reflective of the new job listings on the site. Jobs have been
categorised by location, functional area, and industry. The index has been calculated across cities/ functional
area- Deptt/ industry verticals.
On the basis of new job listings added to the site every month, the data shows an increase or decline in the
jobs. To calculate the index, jobs in July 2008 have been taken on a base of 1000. The August, September,
October and November data has been indexed against July 2008. The report produced monthly will show
hiring trends across industry sectors, geography and functional areas. More than 32500 clients use
Naukri.com, leading to high reliability of the data. Naukri,com serviced over 24500 unique clients in H1 2008
